Abstract

In analyzing utterances there are some branches of pragmatics that we can used, one of them is speech act. Speech act is language cover an action. Speech act divided into 3 levels; locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. This research tells about illocutionary act especially expressive act. Expressive act is what the speaker feels about state of affair in sincerity condition and the social relationship between speaker and the hearer in society is social function. Research questions of this study were: (1) what are the types of expressive speech acts as found on La La Land movie, (2) What are the social functions of expressive speech acts as found on Lala Land movie. The researcher used qualitative approach. The researcher was used Lala Land transcript as a media to collect the data. The data of this research are the utterances containing expressive speech act taken from the conversation between characters in the La la Land movie. The researcher used content analysis, the data are in the form of the script of Lala Land dialogue. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Searle (1976) and Norrick’s (1978) theories. The result of this showed that there are 35 utterances consist of expressive speech act. Abstract

This study is concerned with Information Communication and Technologies (ICTs) and Group Discussion (GD) that become one of the most effective solutions to the problem. Universitas Bumigora has numerous students in one class in which each class consists of approximately 50-60 students. The aims of this study are to identify students’ perspectives on GD and ICTs and to compare men's and women’s perspectives on GD and ICTs in large classes. This study was conducted in two big classes. The instrument in this research was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to get information about the students’ responses to the application of FGD and ICTs in teaching and learning English and to identify the differences responses between man and women group. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This study was conducted in two big classes. The instrument in this research was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to get information aboutthe students’ responses to the application of FGD and ICTs in teaching and learning English. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the results, the students believed that group discussion and ICTs belong to “very good” and “good” with range score 3.11-3.44.

Abstract

In learning English, there are several skills that should be learned by students such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students are expected to be able to master all language skills of English to communicate. In order to communicate there are components that the students must be able to acquire. Vocabulary is important to learn by students. One of ways to learn vocabulary is through a game. An Alvo Game was adapted from Game Guess Image and Scrabble game. The purpose of this study is to make Alvo Game to for elementary school students. The result of this study was a set of Alvo Game consists of plywood in which that there are twenty-nine double of alphabet and thirty pictures. The evaluation showed that it was suitable for elementary school students. By using this game, the students can learn vocabulary in a more interesting and attractive way.

Abstract

Abstract : The aims of this study are: to identify the needs of English teaching materials based on local culture for VII graders of junior high school and to develop an appropriate guideline of English teaching materials based on local culture for VII graders of junior high school.  This study adopted the design of research and development proposed by Dick, Carey & Carey (2009). The first draft of the guideline was validated by experts and evaluated by English teachers through Focus Group Discussion. The students’ responses also were needed to know their agreements toward the English materials based on local culture. The responses of the English teachers show the mean value ranging from 2.91 to 3.82, while the mean value of the students was ranging 2.94 to 3.62. It means both of mean value results categorized into “good” and “very good” based on interval range 2.52 to ≥ 3.28. It can be concluded that the English teachers agree with the developed guideline and the students agree with the English materials based on local culture. Keywords: needs analysis, developing a guideline of English teaching materials, local culture

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the ability of students’ ability in understanding English poetry at the third grade of English Study Program, State polytechnic of Bengkalis. The type of the research was descriptive research. The data of the research were collected by administering written English Poetry test. The finding shows that the average score of ability of the students in understanding English poetry is poor. The categories of students’ ability were; sound categorized poor, structure categorized poor, and sense categorized poor. It means that the students’ ability in understanding English poetry was poor.

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of the research are to (1) introduce the method of  “The Tense Key Matching” which is used to create English sentences easily to the Class X students of MAS Nurul Falah, Airmolek, INHU, Riau, (2) find out if “The Key Tense Matching” is usable to be applied in Class X of MAS Nurul Falah, Airmolek, INHU, Riau to help the students face difficulties in creating English sentences so that they can master the four language skills in the future, and (3) know if the effectiveness of “The Key Tense Matching” to the students’ability in creating English sentences will give the effect on their English learning outcomes or not. This is a quasi experimental research which uses the pre-test and post-test design. The sample consist of two group: experimental class (given treatment of the tense key matching method) and controlled class (taught through conventional method). The subject of the research is the Class X students of MAs Nurul Falah Airmolek. The data is gathered through the techinqes of observation, test, documentation, and interview. Ttest  is used to analysed the data. The result of the test shows that the tense key matching method is more effective than he conventional  method when it is applied in teaching English grammar (t = 8.547 and p ˂ 0.000).

Abstract

Improving the content and classroom materials design for English Classrooms at any vocational high school level is a tough job. English teachers at SMK levels found it challenging to integrate their classrooms materials to fulfill the vocational needs of their students. No denying to the fact that Vocational English has set a different framework compare to general English classes at the similar level of education. This study aims as a joint research partnership and as well as a platform to improve and create variety of English Vocational Materials for SMK classes in Sampang area. Around 7 public vocational high schools were involved in this study, providing a thorough information of its students’ needs for ESP purposes. The materials included knowledge about syllabus writing and the creation of independent teaching materials in the classroom as well as the implementation of reading, writing, and listening and speaking which are targeted to two different goals, UNBK and ESP improvements. The activity of developing English teaching materials is also expected to improve the final results of UNBK Students in English subjects. The study has resulted in the findings of challenges of teaching and developing materials for ESP classes, learning and teaching weaknesses triumph with the models, and the possible future solutions for ESP teaching at SMK level. The study also resulted in the initiative project collaboration with MKKS SMK in Sampang area to pioneer Sampang Vocational Camp 2020.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to make tenses compilation using a video in a film entitled Penguins of Madagascar. The method used in this study was a descriptive research. This video was created by using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 program. There were several steps in making this video, including: collecting the materials, recording the voice, converting the files and editing the video The result of this study was a video of tenses compilation with English subtitle for learning English. The duration of the video was about ten minutes 40 second starting from the beginning until closing. There were pictures, audio, video and some informations about Penguins of Madagascar. This product is hoped to help students in learning  grammar especially tenses in easy way and fun and would become one of interesting teaching materials for English teachers in teaching English

Abstract

Reading comprehension of business texts is necessary for students. However, many students, especially D3- Business Administration department of state polytechnic of Bengkalis faced dificulties in comprehending the business texts. Therefore, TELLS Strategy was proposed. TELLS strategy is a strategy which stands for Study the title; Examine for clues; Look for Important words; Look for hard words, and identify the setting. This article aimed at finding out to what extent the strategy to improve the students reading comprehension of business text and the factors that influence the changes. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. The result found that the students’ score in reading comprehension of business texts test increased. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 64 and in cycle 2 was 70. Then, the factors that influence the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of business texts were interesting teaching material, teacher’s role, and students’ willingness to do all procedures of the strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of TELLS strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension of business texts majoring Business Administration improved both students’ score in reading tests and their interest in reading activities.
