Abstract

Background: One of the important procedures in pneumonia treatment is to conduct a followup care. The follow-up care of pneumonia disease should be done at least two days after treatment or sometimes earlier when the patients have bad physical conditions. The cases of pneumonia children in Cisaga health centre have been increasing recently, and even have a higher percentage compare to the average national cases. However, the percentage of the follow-up care cases has only about 13.5% from the total cases. The objective of this study is to identify some factors associated with mother’s compliance to conduct a follow-up care oftheir children who suffered pneumonia at Cisaga health centre.Method : A cross sectional survey with 50 sample, which consists of 40 patients have done a follow-up care and 10 patients have never done a follow-up care, has been employed in this study. Chi-square test has been used to examine the associations between factors and mother’scompliance. Results : Chi-square test shows that there is an association between knowledge and mother’s compliance behaviour since p<0.05. However, mother’s education level, occupation, and family supports and income have no association with the mother’s compliance. The studysuggests that information, education and communication programs in terms of preventing and treating pneumonia disease in children under five including the causes, the treatment procedures, and the effects of the disease, have to be conducted intensively, particularly to mothers who have children suffering pneumonia.Keyword: Pneumonia, compliance behaviour, mother, follow-up care

Abstract

Background : Indonesian young people have been facing significant challenges to their health and well-being. This situation has causing an increased vulnerability to health hazards of various kinds, specially related to reproductive and sexual health, including the growing threat of HIV/AIDS. These adolescent health issues, most of which are preventable, can lead to significant morbidity and mortality.Method : This paper reports on findings from a recent study, which seeks to identify predictor factors of youth sexual behaviour and their need for services, in order to derive practical policy for enhancing youth sexual and reproductive health services. Involving a total 2000 sample derived from youth population aged 18-24 years old. 1000 samples were each randomly selected from factory employers and university students.Result : The findings show that the overall pattern of sexual and reproductive youth health risk is relatively low in comparison to that in many other countries, this is partly related to distinctive and positive characteristics of the culture of Central Java. The findings also showthat Self-efficacy is the strongest predictor of youth sexual behaviour. This study recommends that future policy and program should address how to protect oneself if engaging in sex, rather than only focusing on how to abstain from sex. Such policies and program development should be addressed to the ways to maintaining young people’s positivenorms and values in line with existing culture and religion by enhancing their self efficacy and life-skill through school-based sexual and reproductive health education and services. Keywords : Health services, reproductive and sexual health, sexual behaviour, javaneseyouth.

Abstract

Background : The ASA IPPA Central Java has been conducting a series of IEC activities of HIV prevention programmes for young people regularly. These activities are conducted by ASA volunteers by providing a lecture to middle and high school students. Unfortunately, these activities have never been evaluated in terms of the methods, the materials and theoutputs of the lecture. This study observes the IEC process of HIV prevention for young people conducted by ASA volunteers.Method : An observation technique using check lists has been used to observe the process of the IEC activities which were conducted by the ASA volunteers. The performance of the communicators, the curriculum provided, the responses of the target group and the media used, were observed directly during the IEC activities. Focus group discussions with students and indepth interviews with coordinators of IEC activities in each school, were also conducted to obtain more detail information. Two middle schools and three high schools which selected purposively have been participated in this study. Results : The study shows that the performance of the communicators during the IEC activities were relatively good, particularly in terms of language, skills of communication technique and relationship with the audiences. Although not all questions asked by the audiences, havebeen answered by the communicators, particularly unrelated topics to HIV/AIDS and drugs, using new terminology during a lecture has made many students interested to listen and provided some good responses. In terms of the IEC materials, the middle schools were more focused on drugs, whereas the high schools were more concerned in HIV/AIDS prevention. Each lecture provides an additional programmes such as HIV/AIDS film and drug user cases in VCD format. This study suggests that the skills of communicators and the materials of the IEC, should be improved regularly in order to increase the fit between the IEC activities and the audience needs. The usage of audio visual aids during the IEC process should be optimized to make it easier for the audiences to understand the materials being provided. The output assessments should also be conducted in order to obtain direct feed back from the audiences. Keywords: IEC process, HIV/AIDS, Students.
