Abstract

The purpose of this research is to map the naming of food brands that have both denotative and connotative meanings for food merchants in Malang City. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach to examine terms in food brands. The object of this study is the  naming of food brands in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. Observation and interviews were used as data gathering methods. The data collected for each term in Malang City's food brands were analyzed for denotation and connotation meaning aspects. The results of the study show that food brands in Malang City use terms with denotative and connotative meanings. The brand's connotative meaning differs greatly from its denotative meaning. According to the findings of this study, the names of their food brands are chosen using four approaches: 1) adapting the concept of a currently viral food brand, 2) being representative, 3) adapting buyer remarks, and 4) thinking about names as sales progress. Keywords : Culture, identity, connotative meaning, denotative meaning, brand.   Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memetakan penamaan brand makanan yang mengandung makna denotasi dan konotasi pada pedagang makanan di Kota Malang. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan semantik yang berfungsi menganalisis kata dalam brand makanan. Objek penelitian ini adalah penamaan brand makanan di Kota Malang, Jawa Timur Indonesia. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pengamatan dan wawancara. Data yang diperoleh pada setiap kata dalam brand makanan di Kota Malang dianalisis unsur makna denotasi dan konotasi. Hasil temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa brand makanan di Kota Malang menggunakan kata yang berimplikasi pada makna denotasi dan konotasi. Dan makna konotasi pada brand tersebut jauh berbeda dari makna denotasinya. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa pengambilan nama pada brand makanan mereka melalui empat pendekatan yang berupa 1) adaptasi konsep brand makanan yang sedang viral, 2) representatif, 3) adaptasi komentar pembeli, dan 4) memikirkan nama seiring berjalannya penjualan.

Abstract

The use of textbooks in the context of the EFL setting has come to the surge that teachers heavily relied on them in teaching-learning processes. This article investigated the organization of tasks distributed, in the textbooks, by identifying sequences of the task regarding task hierarchies based on Bloom's taxonomy and by exploring the total number of tasks distributed for each chapter in English textbook entitled When English Rings a Bell for the 7th grade of junior high school. The data were collected through content analysisThe findings of this study revealed that there was no systematic task distributed hierarchically based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and the total number of tasks distributed was randomly arranged through chapters. HOT’s level tasks did not exist in the tasks allocated. The findings of this study suggest that textbook developers must give more attention to the tasks allocated for each chapter regarding the rise of hierarchy and the distribution of total number.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explain the procedure for applying the inquiry method in the research topic selection process and to present students' perceptions of inquiry-based learning in research topic selection. The method used is classroom action research. The research data source is 24 seventh-semester students of D4 Civil Engineering at the State Polytechnic of Malang. The research instruments are observation guidelines and a questionnaire on student responses. The results show that (1) the inquiry learning procedure on research topic selection material has six stages: orientation, problem formulation, hypothesis formulation, data collection, conclusion formulation, and reflection, and (2) students' perceptions of inquiry learning indicate a positive effect on determining research topics. Thus, inquiry-based learning in the research topic selection process is recommended as a means to enhance students' academic writing skills because this method combines activity-oriented learning and logical arguments. Keywords : Inquiry, research topic, topic selection, learning.   Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menjelaskan prosedur penerapan metode inkuiri dalam proses pemilihan topik penelitian serta memaparkan persepsi mahasiswa terhadap pemebelajaran inkuiri pada pemilihan topik penelitian. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Sumber data penelitian yakni 24 mahasiswa semester tujuh D4 Teknik Sipil Politeknik Negeri Malang. Instrumen penelitian berupa pedoman observasi dan kuisioner tentang respon mahasiswa. Adapun hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) prosedur pembelajaran inkuiri  pada materi pemilihan topik penelitian memiliki enam tahapan yaitu orientasi, merumuskan masalah, merumuskan hipotesis, mengumpulkan data, merumuskan kesimpulan dan refleksi dan (2) persepsi mahasiswa terhadap pembelajaran menunjukkan secara positif dapat membantu menentukan topik penelitian. Dengan demikian, pembelajaran inkuiri dalam proses pemilihan topik penelitian disarankan sebagai sarana untuk meningkatkan keterampilan penulisan akademik mahasiswa karena metode tersebut menggabungkan pembelajaran berorientasi aktivitas dan argumen logis.

Abstract

While learning English as a Foreign language implies learning the culture of its native speaker, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture mandated that the Indonesian culture be preserved and cultivated. Preserving and cultivating values is best done through literacy conveyed via text in the classroom. Concerning preserving and cultivating Indonesian values, the present study analyzed an English Textbook for Indonesian students in Grade X. The study was conducted as a descriptive qualitative research. Data collected from the source was analyzed using the concept of culture by Byram & Morgan. The findings show that the textbook contains a representation of local Indonesian culture in the form of social identities and social groups, beliefs and behavior, socio-political institutions, socialization and the life-cycle, national cultural heritage, and national geography that represent Indonesia as a prosperous nation with fertile lands and rich natural resources. The book also represents social interactions, national history, stereotypes, and national identity as a developing nation since Indonesia's independence from colonialization. With the abundant representations of local Indonesian culture, the English textbook supports the preservation of the local culture amidst the introduction of the foreign culture brought by the introduction of English as the target language and target culture, promoting a balance of global-local combination that can reap benefits from the best of both cultures.

Abstract

It is unavoidable that Indonesia only has a few performing arts due to the country's heterogeneity and the different ethnic groups that contribute to its varied cultures. One of these is the Piring dance (tari piring), a traditional Minangkabau plate dance from West Sumatra where the performers vigorously twist plates in different forms and swift movements while holding one in each hand. However, throughout time, this ritual dance has undergone commodification, in which the components of the performance have evolved into things that have economic worth and can be “purchased” and “sold”. Thus, this study aspires to ascertain these aspects’ nonverbal communication connotations both before and after commodification. The research used here is qualitative, with a literature study approach and data investigation through the descriptive analysis method. Research revealed that there were modifications to the musical accompaniment, clothing color, and movement. In conclusion, these components shifted from being used only to express appreciation to God to serving commercial interests. Because it provides insights into the evolving aspects of the Piring dance before and after commodification, which can be forgotten due to globalization, this research will be highly helpful for preservation. Keywords: Commodification, Piring dance commodification, Piring dance nonverbal communication.    Abstrak Sebagai negara yang heterogen dengan beragam suku bangsa yang menghasilkan banyak budaya, tidak memungkinkan Indonesia hanya memiliki sedikit seni pertunjukan. Tari piring, salah satunya, adalah tarian tradisional Minangkabau dari Sumatra Barat yang masing-masing tangan penarinya memegang piring dan memutarnya dengan kuat dalam berbagai formasi dan gerakan cepat. Namun, seiring berjalannya waktu, tarian ritual ini mengalami komodifikasi yang unsur-unsur pertunjukannya berubah menjadi sesuatu yang bernilai ekonomi dan dapat “diperjualbelikan”. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna komunikasi nonverbal unsur-unsur tersebut sebelum dan sesudah komodifikasi. Melalui pendekatan studi literatur dan metode analisis deskriptif sebagai acuan pengkajian data, penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif. Setelah dilakukan penelitian, ditemukan adanya perubahan pada gerak, warna pakaian, dan musik pengiring. Kesimpulannya, unsur-unsur tersebut berubah dari yang murni hanya untuk menunjukkan rasa syukur kepada Tuhan menjadi tujuan komersial. Penelitian ini cukup substansial sebagai pelestarian karena memberikan wawasan tentang perubahan unsur-unsur tari piring sebelum dan sesudah komodifikasi yang dapat terlupakan melalui globalisasi.

Abstract

The teacher's role as a facilitator is to utilize learning media which plays an essential role in facilitating students in learning. This study aims to (1) describe the necessity of Javanese language learning media in the 9th grade of Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 3 Ngadirejo, (2) to describe the web-based prototype of aksara Jawa Dhek Bung (bedhek tembung) learning media. The methods used were research and development with data collection techniques in the form of observation, questionnaires, and unstructured interviews. The questionnaires of students' and teachers' needs, as the instrument used in this study, revealed that 70,7% of students chose aksara Jawa material as the most challenging material in Javanese subject. The techniques used during data analysis are quantitative and qualitative, leading to the findings that students and teachers require innovation for learning media, such as web-based media, to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere. Therefore, Dhek Bung learning media is developed as an engaging alternative learning media for students to learn Javanese. Keywords: Learning media, aksara Jawa, Dhek Bung media.   Abstrak Peran guru sebagai fasilitator yaitu menyediakan fasilitas berupa media pembelajaran yang berperan penting untuk memudahkan siswa dalam belajar. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan (1) mendeskripsikan kebutuhan media pembelajaran Bahasa Jawa di SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Ngadirejo kelas IX, (2) mendeskripsikan prototipe media pembelajaran aksara Jawa Dhek Bung (bedhek tembung) berbasis website. Metode yang digunakan yaitu research and development dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara tidak terstruktur. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa kuesioner kebutuhan siswa dan guru yang kemudian diperoleh sebuah data bahwa 70,7% siswa memilih materi aksara Jawa sebagai materi tersulit dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Jawa. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan yaitu kuantitatif dan kualitatif dengan temuan fakta bahwa siswa dan guru membutuhkan inovasi media pembelajaran seperti media berbasis website agar suasana belajar lebih menyenangkan. Media pembelajaran Dhek Bung dikembangkan berdasar pada hasil analisis tersebut, sehingga dapat menjadi alternatif media pembelajaran Bahasa Jawa yang menarik minat siswa.

Abstract

Alih wahana has become one of the trends in efforts to develop literary works. However, literary studies are still limited, especially studies on the conversion of short stories into drama scripts. The study was conducted with two objectives, including describing the variety of additions, subtractions, and changes in variations in the script of the play from the short story Sambutan di Pemakaman Ayah by Jujur Prananto. This research method is descriptive qualitative, by describing the various forms of differences between short story works and drama script works. The data in this study is in the form of short story texts, drama script texts, and drama performances. Data collection is carried out by observation and documentation techniques. Observation was carried out by participants by observing the staging of the play. Documentation is carried out on short story texts and drama script texts with a note-taking technique, namely finding aspects of the drama script that are different from short stories. Based on the results of the analysis, there are additions and subtractions to the drama resulting from the short story ride. Additions to the drama script are in the addition of scenes, dialogue, characterizations, and settings. Reduction of the drama script is done to the scenes, story characters, and plot. Changes in variations in drama scripts are found in changes in variations in points of view and characters. The difference is adjusted to the characteristics of the literary work of the play. Keywords : Alih wahana, short story, drama.   Abstrak Alih wahana menjadi salah satu tren dalam upaya pengembangan karya sastra. Meski demikian, kajian sastra alih wahana masih terbatas dilakukan khususnya kajian pada pengalihwahanan cerita pendek menjadi naskah drama. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan dua tujuan, antara lain mendeskripsikan ragam penambahan, pengurangan, dan perubahan variasi pada naskah drama hasil alih wahana cerita pendek Sambutan di Pemakaman Ayah karya Jujur Prananto. Metode penelitian ini yaitu kualitatif deskriptif, dengan mendeskripsikan ragam bentuk perbedaan antara karya cerpen dengan karya naskah drama. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa teks cerita pendek, teks naskah drama, dan pementasan drama. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi dan dokumentasi. Observasi dilakukan secara partisipan dengan mengamati pementasan drama. Dokumentasi dilakukan pada teks cerpen dan teks naskah drama dengan teknik simak catat, yakni menemukan aspek-aspek pada naskah drama yang berbeda dari cerpen. Hasil dari analisis alih wahana cerpen ini adalah terdapat penambahan dan pengurangan pada drama hasil alih wahana cerpen tersebut. Penambahan pada naskah drama terdapat pada penambahan adegan, dialog, tokoh-penokohan, dan latar. Pengurangan naskah drama dilakukan pada adegan, tokoh cerita, dan alur. Perubahan variasi pada naskah drama terdapat pada perubahan variasi sudut pandang dan tokoh. Perbedaan tersebut disesuaikan dengan karakteristik karya sastra naskah drama.
