Abstract

Poetry is a mirror of a society. It contains the poets’ emotions, thought, and impression poured through the medium of language. This paper describes the thought of Ali Ahmad Said, who is better known as Adonis, on Arabic poetry from the perspectives of literature, linguistics, culture, and philosophy. The study begins by describing Adonis’ biography, followed by a description and analysis of Arabic poetry, its forms and relation to religion and modernity. The formulated problems concerns who Adonis is, how the position of Arabic poetry in relation with culture (religion) is, and how the modernity of Arabic poetry is. Using descriptive analytical method and making al-Shi’riyya al-‘Arabiyya the main reference, the paper comes to a conclusion that Adonis is a person who tends to reject the establishment in many facets of the Arabs’ life and further encourage them to accept changes. Arabic poetry serves as a more effective medium for the authority to establish the public religiosity. With all its traditionalism, Arabic poetry turns out to show its modernity because it maintains a high plurality and never ending creativity.

Abstract

The clash between Eastern and Western civilization has always been a topic of interest with various responses. Egypt is one of the countries, which has this response. This can be seen from Taufiq al-Hakim’s  “Usfur min al-Syarq”. The scholars of modern Egypt thought have divided these responses into three groups: the conservatives, the Westernists, and the moderates. The conservatives tend to preserve the indigenous cultures. The Westernists try to westernize the indigenous cultures, while the moderates hybridize the culture. Through Abrams’ categorization, al-Hakim’s thought can be formulated in three developments. Firstly, the progress of those two civilizations has different directions. Each has its own advantages: the Western deals with earth and the Eastern with heaven. Secondly, the Eastern loses its identity if the Western dominates. Thirdly, al-Hakim hybridizes the positive sides of the two poles.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the metaphorical image in sêsênggak (Sasak proverbs) which is based on the types of reference as the target domain (tenor) and source domain (vehicle); and to uncover the meaning or significance. The data are collected through participant observation method and in-depth interview with key informants. The results show, on one hand, that the sociocultural background of the Sasak community gives the most dominant contribution in sêsênggak’s lexicon (language). On the other, that socio-cultural background has much mpression on the various humanitarian issues involving sêsênggak, which is created to control (directive-prohibitive) and to evaluate the attitude or behavior of a person or a certain group of people. On that ground, sêsênggak was born from some unique mixtures of the natural environment and the socio-cultural organization of thoughts, opinions, memories, senses, experiences, knowledge, imaginations, creativities, sensitivities, intelligences, as well as consciousness, which are based on the rules, the laws, and the societal structures. These mixtures become a united, coherent, rational, and organized expression in the framework of language and conscience.

The short stories selected were ‘Strangers when we meet’, ‘That was then’, and ‘Girl’ which were published in Midnight All Day, a short story collection written by Hanif Kureishi, an English writer. The analysis was conducted on the characters of the stories which were subjected to the concepts. The results revealed that the concepts could be applied to the relevant characters. Abstract

Since the rise of the social science, in this case cultural studies, it has been difficult to determine the appropriate approach to analyze the social problems. The approach has close relation with the epistemology critic, which is unavoidable to the cultural studies, especially in the time where it handles the cultural variation facts. That the culture varies and that it gives the cultural studies a stimulus to adapt the modern linguistics are just a couple of facts. As a linguistics model, a cultural study has a powerful scientific base in the multi-variation of cultural data. The implication is so deep that it gives an orientation or a new perspective over a culture to be knowledgeable of human life. The use of modern linguistics approach (structural) in the cultural studies is related to Levi-Strauss ideas. He was the pioneer in the use of modern linguistics principles as models in order to know the cultural variations. The ambition of Levi-Strauss to build the cultural studies generates a scientific status for the study. It removes subjectivism, which ignores the essence of the meaning of culture. That ambition made structuralism a scientific study it is now although it is true that the modern linguistics creates the framework for the development of cultural studies. Yet, Structuralism has been criticized because it generates cultural studies to be mechanical.

Abstract

Positioning women in literary works by women’s writers almost always has a dynamic turn. Asma Nadia, as a women’s writer is a representation of Forum Lingkar Pena which tends to flip the early women’s narrative model in Reformation era. This narrative model positions women, who are as if in a autonomus and auto-regulative narrative, into their subordinative position. The reversal of women’s narration by women’s writer with the religious perspectives brings up questions like: how is the positioning represented? How are the construction and the position of women in the turning point of the Reformation? What kind of reproduction of womanhood is formed in the novel? This paper aims at investigating the construction of womanhood in the novel with the religious perspectives by Asma Nadia, Bunda Kisah Cinta 2 Kodi. The alternatives in facing the religious structures are negotiated by the writers in various ways. Pardoxes emerge as the consequences of those alternatives.

Abstract

This paper aims at elaborating the relationship of translation, culture, and identity. Translation is one means of cultural development. It adopts not only from other elements, but also from other culture to be dialogued and equivalented with the target culture. Within this "taking" and "giving" process the identity of a culture is laid. Historically speaking, translation has proved its great role in human civilization since Ancient Greek. Through translation the contact between two cultures can benefit one another in many ways. This contact involves at least two processes; dialogue of language and of thought. One critical issue in terms of cultural development, which is found through out history, is that translation involved a nation in the process.
