Abstract

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the technical efficiency of the input use of smallholder oil palm plantations, (2) to determine the factors causing the technical inefficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations, and (3) to analyze the risk behavior of oil palm smallholders in Jambi Province. This research was conducted in Muaro Jambi, Batanghari, Sarolangun and Tebo Districts. The location was selected purposively. The sample size is 280 farmers. The estimation method used the Kumbhakar Production Function model with the stochastic frontier approach. The results showed that the use of production inputs either simultaneously or partially had a significant effect on FFB production. The use of production inputs has not technically efficient yet (ET <0.63). The source of technical inefficiency is significantly influenced by the age of the farmer, land distance, and area. The farther the land is; the older the farmer is; and the more land is cultivated by the farmer, the less efficient oil palm farming is. Oil palm farmers behavior in Jambi Province is risk averse. This behavior impacts on the allocation of inputs used. The more avoidance of risks, the less the allocation of input use, and the farm productivity achieved will be lower. The combination of the use of palm oil production inputs will affect the level of technical efficiency. The low average of technical efficiency indicates that the risk preferences of oil palm farmers have an effect on technical efficiency. Increased productivity that takes into account the production function, risk function, and profit function must be used as much as the optimal use of input in order to obtain a productivity increase of 28 - 49%

Abstract

Plantation is a source of foreign exchange and a source of employment. Commodities included in the plantation sub-sector are oil palm, rubber, coconut, coffee, tea and so on. The plantation sub-sector commodities that play an important role as a source of foreign exchange are oil palm and rubber. This study aims to determine the comparison of income from rubber farming whose land is converted to oil palm in Bajubang District, Batanghari Regency. This research was conducted in two villages in Bajubang subdistrict, namely Penerokan Village and Ladang Peris Village. The number of samples was 50 farmers, consisting of 25 rubber farmers who did not convert rubber plantation land to oil palm and 25 rubber farmers who had converted their rubber plantation land to oil palm. Sampling was done by using purposive sampling method. Based on the results of the independent sample t test, the sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000 is smaller than the value of α = 5%, which means there is a difference in the farm income of farmers who convert rubber land to oil palm. The amount of farm income that does not convert rubber land to oil palm is IDR 8,518,298 // Ha / year, while the income of farmers who convert rubber land to oil palm is IDR. 14,412,748 / Ha / Year.

Abstract

This study was aimed at: (1) Knowing the description of the supply chain of red chili and, (2) Analyzing the supply chain performance of red chili in the city of Jambi. This research was conducted in Jambi City starting from the Angso Duo Central Market using primary data and secondary data. The analytical method used is descriptive using the Food Supply Chain Network (FSCN) framework and the marketing efficiency approach, through marketing margin analysis, farmer's share analysis and profit-to-cost ratio. The number of respondents was 30 farmers, 17 wholesalers and 8 wholesalers. From the research results it can be seen that (1): the supply chain of red chili still does not meet the desired criteria in the FSCN analysis framework, but it already has a clear target market but supply chain management is not well managed, red chili comes from two sources, namely from farmers and from various production centers through wholesalers, (2) the performance of the supply chain of red chili in Jambi City shows inefficient conditions. This can be seen from the results of the analysis of marketing margins, farmer's share, and profit-to-cost ratios which show that they have not been equally profitable for each member of the supply chain involved. The marketing channel for red chili from farmers that shows the most efficient condition is the marketing channel I. Meanwhile, the supply channel for red chili from various production centers through wholesalers shows the most efficient condition is supply channel II.
