Abstract

The research is aimed at discovering the ability of STBA-PIA Second Year Students 2017/2018 Academic Year in using the Chinese Adverb “Tongchang通常” and “Changchang 常常”. This research uses a descriptive quantitive design method with a total population of 67 students. As the total population is under 100, the whole students are taken as the research sample. Students’ ability in using both Chinese Adverbs “Tongchang通常” and “Changchang 常常” is measured by using the test in which is the research instrument. The validity and reliability of the research instrument are examined by using content validity and internal reliability. Internal reliability is examined by using Kuder Richardson 20 formula. The reliability of the instrument shows the coefficient of 0.618 in which may be interpreted as quite a strong value. After passing the reliability score, the instrument is given a test to students. The result of the test is the ability of STBA-PIA second-year students in using the Chinese Adverb “Tongchang通常” and “Changchang常常” can be categorized as quite competent as 61.18% of students reach the average score of 74.72 for “Tongchang通常”  and 63.18% of students reach the average score of 72.04 for “Changchang 常常”.Keywords: Cognitive Ability, Chinese Adverb, 通常 (tongchang), 常常 (changchang).

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language components which has an important role in language learning. Without having enough vocabulary someone is impossible to speak or communicate in English. The Purpose of Learning Vocabulary To learn something people have to know the purpose of the things Reviews their learn, in this case the purpose of learning vocabulary is to help the learners Easier in expressing the idea, the research aimed to find out the effect of using picture as teaching media in improving vocabulary at timor leste border.The method in this study is Experimental designwith control and experimental group. The populations in this research used random sampling technique with the number of sample are 42 students; 21 students in control group and 21 students in experimental group. This study was conducted at SMP Satap Negeri Sono Perbatasan Timor Leste, from the eighth grade students in academic year 2017/2018. The instruments that the researcher used arevocabulary test and questionnaire and the research data were collected through a pre-test and post-test and data were analyzed by meand through SPSS 16. The research resultshows revealed that the applying of picture as media in teaching vocabulary could significantly improve their vocabulary and using picture had controibution on students in mastering vvocabulary. Besides, the responses of the experimental group the students of SMP Satap Negeri Sono perbatasan Timor leste have good perception towards the using of picture technique.Therefore it can be concluded that the use of picture media for teaching english especially vocabulary to the students is really effective Keywords: Picture,Teaching vocabulary and Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

This research aims at developing a writing assessment rubric for a exposition text. This rubric is made in accordance with the assessment standard of the current Senior High School curriculum, Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP)  to be used by the teachers.  Based on observations made of two high school English teachers at SMA Negeri 19 Medan , it was found that the assessment of students' writing in class XI was done by simply giving points or grades without any clear criteria. Such assessments tend to be subjective, inaccurate, and are not helpful for students. One way to overcome this is to use an assessment rubric. The development of this rubric was done through 7 stages of development, namely research and information collection, planning, developing premilinary forms of the product, premilinary field testing, main product revision, main field testing, and operational product revision. The development of this rubric is based on 16 students' writing. Analysis of data in this study was conducted by analyzing and assessing students' writing in first and second drafts as well as the results of the first and second questionnaires and interviews. The results show a rubric that can be used by the teacher to score students’ writing. Key words:writing, genre, rubric, assessment

Abstract

作为第二语言教学,汉语的近义词教学属于教学中的难点之一,但是我们如果能从学生的母语角度进行句法与语义讲解,这明显能提高教学的效率,减少学生的偏误。本文首先在前人的研究上对汉语“只是/仍然”与“masih”进行总结与理论借鉴;其次,根据语料库的调查,从句法角度将“只是/仍然”与“masih”进行句法位置与组合规律对比,找出汉印尼语的句法与语义之间的异同。最后,从语义角度,将汉语“只是”的【+持续性】、【+强调义】与汉语“仍然”、印尼语“masih”进行语义对比,找出该两种语言的不同点。

Abstract

The study aims to describe types of speech functions and reasons for using them in advertisements. Descriptive qualitative method is applied in this research with sentences found in the dialogue or conversation is the advertisement as the data of this research. The data collected is from the advertisement of electronic media. The research results in the finding of six types of speech function used in the advertisement which are the statement acknowledge statement, question, response statement to question, offer, and command with the statement as the dominant. These types are used in advertisements for descriptive and persuasive purposes.

Abstract

Teacher is key variable of in the conception of teaching. His comprehensive knowledge and skills, governs the ways of the teaching implementation. Teachers’ misconception of what to teach and of approach to apply can be a determinant factor for the failure of the teaching and this is true to the teaching of English. The K-13 curriculum, requires the English teachers to teach English by taking genre as unitizing of lesson topics and as the base approach. In line with the teaching conception, the English teachers’ misconception is also regarded as determinant factor of failure in teaching English. To find out if the teaching of English based genre is implemented properly can be done by researching the English teachers’ misconception. Sixt English teachers’ classroom interaction were observed and took the transcript of the interaction as data. The data were analysed by applying the data analysis model proposed by Bogdan and Biddle. The results shows that there is a misconception among the English teachers about the nature of genre and the nature of genre based approach. This misconception is applied to implement the teaching of English and the misconception is reflected in the KD3 and KD4 formulation and in the activities organization which is very far away from the concept of the genre and the approach. Teaching English with genre based approach is not yet implemented properly and the improper implementation is caused by the misconception among the English teachers.       Keywords: misconception, genre, approach, teaching English

Abstract

Adiwana Unagi Suites is one of the most affected businesses in the hospitality sector during the Covid-19 period, but it is one of the hotels that can survive in Ubud Bali. This hotel has a very high score of 9.6 on booking.com, but throughout 2020 there were several reviews stating that the English of the hotel staff was not good. As long as the hotel is open until the end of 2020 the management has never carried out English language training to hotel staff.The implementation of the English for Specific Purposes training was carried out using an experimental research study which was carried out for six months, from January to June 2020. The implementation was carried out using youtube as a learning medium, and other online platforms such as kahoot, google form and live worksheets.The results of the implementation of the English language training carried out showed progress where during 2020 there was never a tourist review stating a lack of English, as well as an increase in English language skills as indicated by a very significant increase in post-test scores, as well as positive feedback from management.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the exposure of references in Elementary English textbooks. This study revealed that 96% in the attempt to teach the students the reference as the semantic properties of the objects. No systematic and organized attempts to expose the references which enable the students to develop their mental image critically and systematically. Exposure of senses is also found in the textbook although their occurrences are very few and limited in terms of number (4%) and types of sense. The sense exposed in the textbook is limited to attributes of various objects having the same expression and proper names. Systematic and purposeful organizations of this exposure are not found either. This might be caused by the lack of knowledge of the textbook writer about the semantic properties of objects (nouns), their relationship with the mental image development of the students. For better exposure of meanings of objects (nouns) in English textbooks, theories of reference and sense and other semantic properties of meaning must be taken into account. Keywords: reference, sense, elementary, mental image, textbook

Abstract

This study was entitled film as media to teach writing at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Tugumulyo. The purpose of conducting this study was to examine whether this is a significant or not film as media to teach writing at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Tugumulyo. This study used quantitative study, which focused on writing achievement at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Tugumulyo. The writer formulated two hypotheses; there were null hypothesis (Ho) and the alternative hypothesis (Ha). There were 352 students from nine classes as the population of this study. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling was the class XI IA.2 which consists of 37 students. In this case, the writer collected the data by using writing test. Then, the techniques for analyzing the data were the students’ individual score and Match T-test to find out the tobtained. Based on the findings, the result showed that tobtained was 6.38, it was higherthan ttable was 1.697 (tobtainedttable), it could be concluded that the Null Hypothesis (Ha) significantly effective film as media to teach writing at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Tugumulyo.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand the error types and the error causes of Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing Persahabatan Internasional Asia (STBA-PIA) second year students in using the Chinese words “Qiwang期望” and “Yuanwang愿望”. The design of this research is a descriptive qualitative and using both elicitation and interview methods for data collection. Picture description and  elicited imitation methods are applied as the instruments used for describing the error types in using the Chinese words “Qiwang期望” and “Yuanwang愿望”, while interview method is used in defining the causes of errors occurred in using the Chinese words “Qiwang期望” and “Yuanwang愿望”. The results of this study show that there are four types of errors occured in using Chinese words “Qiwang期望” and “Yuanwang愿望” by STBA-PIA second year students which are error of addition (14.6%), error of substitution (66.5%), error of order (12.6%) and error of omission (6.3%). The results also show that there are two types of error causes, they are interlingual transfer (51.7%) and intralingual transfer (48.3%) in which  the intralingual transfer includes the overgeneralization (17.2%), ignore of rule restriction (13.8%), incomplete application of rules (10.3%) and false concept hypothesized (7%).Keywords: Error, Chinese Word, 期望(qiwang), 愿望(yuanwang)
