Paradigm: Journal of Language and Literary Studies is one of the professional publications of the Faculty of Humanities, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang (E-ISSN: 2622-8653). Abstract

Psychological issue namely neurotics has always been an important matter in human life since long ago. There have been several literary works that represent this psychological issue. From many of those works which portray psychological problems, I, Tonya is one of the representative works. In this research, the writer did a film study by using the psychoanalysis approach. The source of the data is the script and scenes of the I, Tonya movie. From the research, it can be concluded that a neurotic personality is shaped due to several aspects. Tonya Harding's childhood and culture had an impact on how she behaved as an adult. Because of her experiences as a child and the competitive culture of American citizens, she develops an aggressive personality. We can infer that Tonya's neurotic trend is gravitating away from people who behave aggressively. Instead of being a survivor, Tonya ended up as an aggressive and hostile person. In conclusion, Tonya was only able to use one neurotic trend, acting violently and manipulatively, as a coping method because of her childhood and culture.

Abstract

This study examines the poem translation of ‘Aku’ by Chairil Anwar into ‘Me’ translated by Burton Raffel. 'Aku' was written in 1943, while the translation was done years later in 1970. Poetry translation can be a challenging yet exciting field to discuss. This study investigates the pragmatic level and the strategy used in translating the poem. While translating poetry, one must understand the implied and inferred meaning of the poet. Thus, the translation must also be able to provide the same image as the original. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative study and applied the analysis of Nida and Taber’s (1974) translation strategy. The result shows that pragmatic devices such as context, speech act, and maxim can be used to understand better the context, tone, and theme of the poetry. The analyses of the strategy are also conveyed to get the inferred meaning of both the original poet and translator. The translator uses sense-for-sense translation to grasp the same image on the target text. Although the translated work’s diction, rhyme, and metaphor are not as depth as the original work, the translated work’s emotion and sense can still be felt as the original work.

Abstract

Power relations is a compelling and complex social issue that has been present throughout human history. It is just as prominent in today’s day and age as in every period of human life; it is also represented in movies. The Lighthouse movie, written and directed by Robert Eggars (2019), depicts the life of two lighthouse keepers, a supervisor and his assistant. They get stranded on a remote island off the coast of New England in the 1890s when a massive storm hits the island. Left with only alcohol as their emergency food supply, the power balance between supervisor and assistant worsens. This article is a film study; the film was analyzed by examining the narrative and cinematography elements. The discussion consults Michel Foucault’s theory (1982) regarding power relations, how power works, the forms they take, and how it is imposed. The finding shows that the supervisor exercises power through domination, subjugation, and exploitation of the assistant. As the setting of the place, the lighthouse has a symbolic meaning of power; as it navigates the ships on the sea, the lighthouse keeper rules what happens both inside and outside his house.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the setup and punch line which become humor in stand up comedy and the form of pragmatic involvement in the form of presuppositions contained in the humor presented by Yono Bakrie in Stand Up Comedy Indonesia season X on Kompas TV. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data sources used in this study are setups, punch lines, and forms of presuppositional pragmatic aspects contained in the humor presented by Yono Bakrie on Stand Up Comedy Indonesia season X on Kompas TV. The data collection technique used in this study was documentation, viewing, and transcription techniques. The data analysis used the theory of Miles and Huberman (2014), which includes the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. Based on the findings and research analysis on Yono Bakrie's stand up video, it was known that the supporting factors of the humor studied were found in this humor because it contains set up and punch lines. In contrast, presuppositions were found in the pragmatic aspects of humor, which became one of the supporting aspects of forming a humor.

Abstract

As a subordinate group in society, women should speak and behave politely. This situation makes women have their characteristics when they speak. Kim Kardashian is a celebrity who has influenced many people through her fashion sense and career advancement as a celebrity and businesswoman. This research aims to examine the women's language characteristics that occurred in Kim Kardashian's utterances in her interview with Vogue. The instrument of this research is a document. First, the data were collected from Kim Kardashian’s interview with Vogue. The data were selected and identified the women's language characteristics that appeared in Kim Kardashian's utterances. Then the research showed the research findings by presenting the data and analysis. There are 360 data classified as women's language characteristics, which consist of 106 intensifiers, 84 hedges, 71 rising intonation, 34 emphatic stress, 31 hypercorrect grammar, 20 empty adjectives, five tag questions, 4 super polite forms, 3 specific colours, and 2 avoidances of swear words. An intensifier is a characteristic that Kim Kardashian frequently uses because she wants to express her certainty about her utterances and make them firmer, so the addressee will take her statements seriously and get the point of her statement.

Abstract

This article explores the narrative in Dragon Age: Origins, a video game released in 2009 that was developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. This research aims to show how this game’s narrative can be experienced both by passively watching and actively involving the player’s input through the video game narrative forms, according to Sebastian Domsch, while showing gender issues through them. This research uses qualitative analysis to explain the video game narrative. The result is that Dragon Age: Origins shows that this game can be experienced both passively and actively through the video game narrative forms, which are passive and active nodal forms. It also shows discrimination towards women in its narrative with the women treated mainly as a victim and the sexual violence against them being used as a way to bring drama to the game’s narrative.

Abstract

People tend to associate heroes and heroism with the acts of being brave and risking life. However, actions that have both of these features are far more likely to generate heroic labels than actions that have only one feature. This paper aims to show the heroism of Samirah al-Abbas in the Rick Riordan’s third novel of the Magnus Chase and the Gods Of Asgard trilogy entitled The Ship of The Dead. This paper approaches the heroism values of the character by applying the concept of the Great Eight popularized by George R. Goethals and Scott T. Allison. The findings show that throughout the plot of the book, Samirah exhibited six of eight heroic traits, which are caring, charismatic, inspiring, selfless, smart, and strong.

Abstract

The difficulty to find meanings of existence and life is a piece of ourselves. Studying existentialism through a movie is suitable for people in general—who in most cases suffer from an existential crisis. This study focuses on the two main protagonists from the movie The Worst Person in the World (2021). To conduct this research, a descriptive qualitative methodology is adopted—in which the two main characters' words and behaviors are the first things to look at while examining existentialism concepts. The data is described based on the existentialism theories of Jean-Paul Sartre, Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, and Albert Camus. As shown in this study, Aksel entered the ethical stage by taking several long-term commitments, whereas Julie had lived her life in both the aesthetic and ethical stages. Due to Aksel's persistent anxiety about death, he chose to rely on ephemeral things to survive. The absurdity in the movie depicted Julie's anxieties. By exploring the similarities and contrasts of Julie and Aksel's existentialism concepts, we can better understand that human beings are unable to avoid the anguish and uncertainty in life. To deal with it is to learn more about ourselves and the most significant thing is to acknowledge a higher authority than oneself—which is God.

Abstract

The study scrutinizes the negotiation of a person’s cultural identity in Viet Thanh Nguyen's short story, “The Americans”. As a diaspora, Nguyen wrote the character of Claire Carver in “The Americans” as a concrete depiction of a diaspora who struggles with negotiating cultural identity. This negotiation is depicted by tensions between Claire (a second generation of a multiracial family), who missed her Asian identity, and his father, who wants her to retain American identity. Therefore, this study explores the homeland (Asia) and host land (America) position in this diaspora character. The cultural identity and diaspora concept by Stuart Hall is applied to critically assess the identity negotiation experienced by the character in the short story. Then, this study applies the content analysis method. The data forms are sentences that indicate identity negotiation. The findings of the study indicate that the diaspora character engages in cultural identity negotiation, which involves American cultural identity of her father as the one who dominates her to embrace American identity and her Asian cultural identity, Vietnamese, as the effect of confusion of her cultural identity since she is a mixed race of black American and a Japanese. This study thus suggests that a further study that celebrates the diaspora’s identity may participate in cherishing the diversity.
