Abstract

This paper discusses two things i.e. the power of English as the most dominant language in the world and the concepts of using English and using the power of English. English today emerges as a power which can’t be defeated by any languages in the world. The domination of English is obviously seen from its status as: the most rapidly growing language, the most widely spoken language, the most popular content language on the internet, the most preferred language for the scientific communities, the number-one language for business, and the most preferred Language for publishing. Knowing this, learners of English should be proud since they evidently learn something extraordinary. The pride should be reflected in two things i.e. learning English earnestly to achieve benefits of having English skills and turning the achivement of benefits to providing benefits for the communities. However, the reality shows that many learners simply learn English to achieve benefits, for example, to get a job or to win a scholarship abroad. Meanwhile, few learners are aware of using English to bring benefits. As the learners learn English and finally achieve a benefit. This is called Using English. Yet, they learn English and achieve a benefit, and could bring benefits to the communities. This is called Using the Power of English. To use the power of English, we should have and integrate English skills, knowledge, experiences, education, as well as professionalism. Therefore, the orientation of learning English should not just end immediately after Using English, but it should continue to Using the power of the English.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the correlation between depth and breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension. This research was conducted by using quantitative method with correlational design. Thirty of fifth semester students of English Education Department at Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar were chosen as the sample of this research. The data was gathered used Word Associates Test, Vocabulary Level Test and reading Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). To verify the hypotheses, the data were analyzed by using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation formula. The finding of this research indicated that there was a moderate correlation between depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension with correlation coefficient value was 0.440 > 0.361, and there was also a moderate correlation between breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension with correlation coefficient value is 0.421> 0.361. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that both of the index value of correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0.440 for depth of vocabulary and 0.421 for breadth of vocabulary were higher than the index value of correlation coefficient of the Product Moment table (rt) of 0.361 which meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a moderate correlation between the depth and breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Abstract

The research aims at finding out the influence of Word Chain Game in increasing the students’ vocabulary with two research objectives. This research was conducted at MTs Barana Jeneponto Regency in Academic Year 2018/2019. In this research, the population was 60 students in the eighth grade. The sample was 40 students. There were 20 students in Class VIII A as experimental class and 20 students in VIII B as controlled class. The research applied non equivalent control grup design. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test, in fill in the blank form. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was a significant improvement in the students’ vocabulary after being taught using Word Chain Game. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance P = 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 38 indicated that the t-test values of the students’ vocabulary (2.492) was higher than t-table value (2.042). Therefore, word chain game also gives opportunities for the development of teachers, learners, and learning itself. Those opportunities can increase students’ motivation and responsibility, a student-centered approach based on individualization, and also accepting the new and dynamic learner's and teacher's roles.

Abstract

This quantitative research is aimed to find out (1) the writing quality of both visual and auditory learners; (2) whether or not the writing quality of auditory learners is significantly different from that of visual learners; and (3) which type of learners has better writing quality. This research applied causal-comparative design in analyzing and comparing the writing skills between the visual and auditory learners. The research participants were the sixth semester students of English Education Department UIN Alauddin Makassar in the academic year of 2017-2018. The data were collected using two kinds of instruments, namely Perceptual Learning Style Inventory and writing test. The results showed that both the visual and auditory learners are in normal criteria of writing quality, and also, there is not any significant difference of writing quality between auditory learners and visual learners. Nevertheless, auditory learners had a tendency to outweigh the visual learners in terms of the total score regardless the insignificancy of the difference. On the other hand, the significant difference of the mean score found from the t-test result underscores the ideas that the learning styles and other contributing factors to writing production to satisfy students’ learning are consistent with the theories used in this study. It proves that every individual’s learning preferences differ significantly, and the stronger the preference, the more important it is to provide compatible learning and teaching strategies which involve students’ strategies, knowledge and purposes.
