Abstract

Nepenthes is a genus of carnivorous plants in the monotypic family Nepenthaceae. The genus comprises around 130 species, numerous natural and many cultivated hybrids. Plants generally need fertilizer to promote their growth and development. However, in their original habitat Nepenthes forms pitchers under nutrition starvation condition. This study aimed at determining the effect of fertilization on the growth and pitcher formation of Nepenthesx ventrata. Experiment was conducted at Suska Nursery, Caringin, West Java, Indonesia from February until June 2011. Plants were treated with the N: P: K, 60-30-30, 32-10-10 and 10-55-10 and at different concentrations ie, 0.5, 1 and 2 g L-1. Fertilizer was applied weekly to the growing media. Weekly observations were conducted on number of leaves, plant height, time of pitchers initiation, the number of pitchers and pitcher diameter and length. Daily temperature, relative humidity and EC (electrical conductivity) of the growing media were also recorded during the experiment. The results showed that combination of fertilizer with different composition and concentration did not affect Nepenthes growth and development. Application of fertilizer resulted in smaller size pitchers compared to control plants. Future research on Nepenthes should be conducted in a longer period since Nepenthes is a slow growing plants. Keywords: Nepenthesx ventrata, fertilizer, pitcher plant

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate yield potential of 12 sweet corn promising hybrids from Plant    Breeding Program (Bogor Agricultural University) and Indonesian Cereals Research Institute colection. This research was conducted at experimental field Indonesian Cereals Research Institute, in Maros, South Sulawesi, from June to August 2011. The genotypes used were : IM-12, IM-13, IM-14, IM-15, IM-16, IM-23, IM-24, IM-25, IM-34, IM-35, IM-45, IM-55, and three comercial varieties i.e. Super Sweet Corn, Sweet Boy, and Talenta. The design of this research was Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Data was analyzed with F-test then continued with Dunnett test (α=5%). Selection index was used for choosing the best genotype. Interaction between two factors, i.e. genotype and year, was analyzed with combined variance analysis using primary data from this research and secondary data from last year research (done from April to June 2010). Broad sense heritability was estimated from this two-factors analysis. The result from this research was the sweet corn productivity was not affected by genotype, but affected by genotype and year interaction. On the other hand, total soluble solid was affected by genotype, but not affected by interaction between genotype and year. Among characters evaluated, total soluble solid had highest broad sense heritability. Based on selection index, IM-16 was a promising hybrid and can be developed to be new commercial variety. Keywords: yield trial, sweet corn hybrid, selection index, broad sense heritability

Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the effects of synthetic cytokinin (6-benzylaminopurine/BAP) treatments on two groups of pineapple (Ananas comosusL.Merr.) plantlets differentiated by plantlet ages. The research used the Factorial Experiment on Randomized Complete Block Design with two factors, which are BAP concentrations (0 ppm, 25 ppm, 50 ppm, and 75 ppm) and plantlet division by age grouping (52 days and 69 days), with three replications. It was then followed by Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference Test at error level of 5%. The results show that BAP treatments with the concentration used in this research significantly inhibits the growth of pineapple plantlets observed on four variables (number of leaves, leave length, plantlet height, and plantlet diameter), while age grouping treatments didn’t show any significant effects, except on the plantlet height at 8 and 14 weeks after treatment. There are also treatment-related interactions which significantly affects the number of leaves and plantlet height. It was then suggested that lower concentrations of cytokinin are required if similar research is to be conducted in the future. Keywords : pineapple, post-acclimatization, propagation, 6-benzylaminopurine
