Abstract

The objectives of this study were to compare nonparametric stability measures, and to identify promising high yield and stability of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) genotypes in eight environments. In every environment, a Randomized Complete Block Design was used with three replications. The method of Nassar and Huehn, Kang, Fox, and Thennarasu was used to analyze the stability and high yield. Spearman’s correlation and Principal Component analysis distinguishes the methods based on two different concepts of stability: the static (biological) and dynamic (agronomic) concepts. The top method was found to be the dynamic stability. Meanwhile, the methods of Si1, Si2, Si3, Si6, Npi1, NPi2, NPi3 and NPi4 were found to be the static stability. Based on the ranking frequency stability of the nonparametric method, the genotypes with the highest frequency of static stability ranking were genotypes IPB002003, IPB002046, IPB009019 and Tit Super, whereas IPB009002 and Tombak were categorized as those of dynamic stability. Genotype IPB120005 and IPB019015 were less adaptable in the multiple environments tested. It shows that the genotypes were specific in certain environments. IPB120005 had high yield and specific location in Boyolali in dry season and IPB019015 genotype was specific in Bogor in wet season. Keywords: chili pepper, nonparametric stability, high yield, dynamic stablility

Abstract

Chili is one commodity that is widely consumed vegetable Indonesian society. Assembling a variety with a specificpurpose requires genetic information about the characters wanted. One way to obtain genetic information is throughthe estimation of variance components and heritability. The purpose of this study was to estimate the variance andheritability of quantitative characters in chili. This research was conducted at the experimental Leuwikopo, Departmentof Agronomy and Horticulture IPB, Bogor Darmaga from April to September 2009. The population used a total of 17genotypes Collection Genetics and Plant Breeding Laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. Genotypesused were IPB C2, IPB C4a, C5a IPB, IPB C10, C14 IPB, IPB C15, C19 IPB, IPB C20, C105 IPB, IPB C110, C126 IPB, IPBC128, C129 IPB, IPB IPBC131 C130, C132 IPB, and IPB C133. The experiment was arranged in a randomized completeblock design (RCBD) single factor with 2 replications. The results showed that the characters have a value of broadgenetic diversity are high dichotomous, plant height, crown width, stem diameter, flowering time, the time of harvest, fruit weight per plant, weight per fruit, fruit length, fruit diameter of the center, and the number of fruits per plant forquantitative and all characters have broad sense heritability values are high. This suggests that the genetic influenceis greater than the influence of the environment on the genotype.

Abstract

Chilli has great potential to be marketed as ornamental potted plants due to their diversity in colours and shape of the fruits. The purpose of this research was to determine the optimum growing media and types of fertilizer to improve the performance of three varieties of potted ornamental chilli, ”Syakira”, “Lembayung”, and “Ayesha”. This research was conducted in Cikabayan greenhouse, Bogor Agricultural University, from December 2016 until May 2017. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with fertilizer as the main factor (without fertilizer, P0; AB mix; P1, and NPK + Gandasil D, P2) and growing media as sub plots, i.e. charcoal husk : soil : manure (M1), perlite: soil : manure (M1), and cocopeat : soil: manure (M3) with proportion of 2:1:1 (v/v). NPK fertilizer and foliar fertilizer Gandasil D showed the maximum plant height, number of branches, number of flowers and fruits. “Ayesha” treated with AB mix fertilizer had the largest fruit diameter whereas “Syakira” and “Ayesha” had the longest fruit under the same treatment. Ornamental chilli grown on charcoal husk and cocopeat had the maximum number of branches and flowers per plant. “Syakira” grown on charcoal husk with AB mix and NPK + Gandasil D, “Lembayung” using cocopeat with AB mix fertilizer, and “Ayesha” varieties using charcoal husk with AB mix fertilizer were the most preferred by the consumers.

Abstract

Corn kernel is one of the most important characters that correlate with corn yield and quality. Sweet corn kernels can be distinguished by its color which is either yellow and white or pale yellow. Sweet corn breeding by crossing genotypes with different kernel colors will affect the inheritance pattern of kernel color. The aims of this research were to understand the inheritance pattern in sweet corn kernel color by crossing yellow and pale yellow color with red and purple corn kernels using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Genetic materials consisted of P1 (JM2 and JM4) and P2 (Red and Purple) and F1, F2, F3, and F1 reciprocals. P1 consists of JM2 and JM4 with flint shape with yellow and pale yellow color; P2 consists of Red and purple with non-yellow colored kernel and flint shape. The results showed maternal effect influenced the kernel color, but did not affect the kernel shape. Epistatic effects were found in kernel shape but it was co-dominant on kernel color inheritance. Broad-sense heritability values were high for all quantitative variables. Keywords : color, heritability, pale yellow, purple, red, shape
