Abstract

Background:  For centuries, newspapers have delivered news to the reading public informing important events of a day. Specifically, the political news nowadays is more relaxed and popular than other sections, not to mention that it is also presented in an interesting and serious manner.Purpose: This research aims to classify and determine the verbs whether they are finite or non-finite.Design and methods: The subjects of the research are political news of “The Jakarta Post” newspaper which have taken and collected from two articles published on Monday, January 27th, 2020 and Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, with the focus on news related to “Donald Trump’s issues between Israeli and Palestinians”. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative methodology. The main theory of this research are Greenbaum and Nelson (2009), Burton-Roberts (2011), and Lobeck and Denham (2014). The steps in analyzing the data include: (1) collecting the data, (2) categorizing the collected data into their own classifications, (3) analyzing the data, (4) determining the data whether they are finite or non-finite verbs, and finally (5) concluding the data.Results: The results of the research shows that from the total of two hundred and seventy-two findings, there are one hundred and twenty-eight data of finite verbs (47%) and one hundred and forty-four data of non-finite verbs which then are divided into thirty-one –to infinitives (12%), twenty-six bare infinitives (10%), twenty-three passive participles (8%), thirty –ing participles (11%), twelve passive participle forms of be (4%), nine progressive participle forms of be (3%), and thirteen perfect participle forms of have (5%).

Abstract

Background:  Teaching languages has different ways from teaching another subjects.Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of Active Learning Method in Teaching Simple Future.Design and methods: This research is using an evaluation method. The research was conducted at the seventh grade of SMP Tunas Harapan, Pasar Kemis, Tangerang. The data were collected through observation, teaching learning process, pre-test and post-test, questionnaires. This program contains the planning, how to implement and improve the students’ English Grammar Simple Future through Active Learning Method. The exercise was a mean to evaluate the action conducted in research.Results: The result of this research indicated that: (1) Using Active Learning Method in teaching simple future is one of a good solution to improve the students’ grammar skill, (2) it makes students are more easily in understanding and using simple future tense in daily activities, and (3) students become more active in responding the lessons or questions given by the teacher.

Abstract

Background:  To some students, learning Indonesian is very boring especially for students who are not used to read and write.Purpose: This study aims to improve the Indonesian Language Learning Outcomes in grade II students at Sukajadi 02 Elementary School in the Indonesian language subject.Design and methods: This classroom action research refers to the Kemmis and Mc Taggart Model which is commonly referred to as the spiral model consisting of four stages. The planning stage, the action stage, the observation stage, the reflection stageResults: The result showed that through the Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach, learning Indonesian in reading and writing is easier to apply in everyday life that students encounter. It can improve Indonesian language learning outcomes in literacy

Abstract

Background:  Throughout the lyric, -from music- there must be emblazoning with the meaning within it.Purpose: This study is coincided in seeking out the use of figurative language’s content in Bohemian Rhapsody’s lyric by Queen.Design and methods: Whereupon, the qualitative approach with design of content analysis is used in this study. The researcher acts as the main instrument since analyzing it. The focus on this study shows twenty figurative languages usage in it. The entire data is analyzed through three stages; 1). Data reduction, 2). Data representation, 3). Conclusion.Results: The result of this study shows there are 20 kinds of figurative languages; they are; Alliteration (3 lines), assonance and consonance (1 line), Hyperbole (1 line), Imagery (2 lines), Internal rhyme (1 line), Irony (1 line), metaphor (2 lines), and Onomatopoeia (1 line) Personification (1 line), Repetition (1 line), Simile (1 line), and symbolism (two lines). The researcher concludes, the figurative language used by this lyric is to bring the meaning coming up with beautiful language.

Abstract

Background:  Translation is an activity of changing one language into target language.  There are a lot of problems encounter by the translator in translating text such as problem in translating poetry, cultural items, idiomatic expression, literature text and many others. Tarian Bumi is an Indonesian novel written by Oke Rusmini where in the novel there are a lot of cultural words, cultural items, especially Balinese culture. Purpose: The purpose of this research article is first to find out the cultural categories of the cultural words found in Tarian Bumi novel and its translation. And second to analyze the translation strategies used by the translator in translating the cultural words found in Tarian Bumi novel and its translation.Design and methods: This research article applied qualitative methods and using documentation technique in collecting the data. In categorizing the cultural words, Newmark’s theory is applied. To find out the translation strategies used by the translator, the theory of Baker of translation strategies is used.Results: The cultural words found in Tarian Bumi novel and its translation are 58 data. From Newmark’s theory of cultural words category, there are 4 categories found, they are: ecology with 1 data, material culture with 14 data, social culture with 6 data, and organization, concept, ideas with 35 data. After the data are categorized based on the cultural category, then writer analyzed the translation strategies. The result is there are only 5 translation strategies found. The strategies found are: 1) translation by more general word 9 data, 2) translation by using cultural substitution 12 data, 3) translation by using loan word or loan word plus explanation 25 data, 4) descriptive equivalent 11 data, 5) translation by omission with only 1 data.

Abstract

Background:  Politeness is a common strategy that is used by most of speakers; even the English native speakers do such thing to their counterparts as well. It is especially appropriate when someone is making a request, talking on the telephone or engaging in a pleasant conversation with someone else. However, there are different opinions about what is and is not considered as polite since there are distinctions in culture from one country to other countries all over the world.Purpose: research aims to find out the negative politeness strategies which is used by Colleen McGuire in her utterances as the main character of the novel Savage Land.Design and methods: This research use a qualitative method. The data source that is used in this research is taken from the dialogues uttered by Colleen McGuire as the main female character in the novel Savage Land.Results: From the 10 strategies of negative politeness strategy according to Brown Levinson’s theory, the writer found the total of 4 strategies which was used by the main female character, Colleen McGuire, in the novel Savage Land. Those 4 strategies are hedge, be pessimistic, minimize the imposition, and impersonalize the speaker to the addressee.

Abstract

Background: Writing is an activity that cannot be kept away from teaching and learning activities in schools. Writing activities can make students be active and develop in learning activities and can stimulate the existence of stringing skills and composing words.Purpose: The research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the image media in increasing the writing skills of the first grader of elementary.Design and methods: The research applied case study methods with descriptive analysis techniques. Samples in this study were taken from SDN Cibinong 01 with a population of 20 grade 1 students consisting of 10 male students and 10 female students.Results: The results obtained from the study showed that the effectiveness of the image media used to hone the initial writing skills of grade 1 students at SDN Cibinong 01 as a whole can be said to have been good with a percentage of 85%. This shows the effectiveness of the use of image media is effective enough to be used to hone the initial word writing skills in grade 1 elementary school students during the pandemic.

Abstract

Background:  This mixing of cultures will also create a cultural reproduction that has the potential for diversity. This culturally diverse country, of course, has a lot of characters from various regions and cultures.Purpose: This research is expected to be a means to reopen the repertoire of the diversity of characters in Indonesia that has begun to be forgotten. In this study, the author will reveal a number of efforts to maintain the Indonesian script.Design and methods: the research design was using the library research method. Sources of data used in this study are in the form of documents, books, journals, digital applications obtained through the internet network.Results: The heritage of Indonesian characters is very diverse with the plurality of tribes in Indonesia. With the support of the development of information technology, the revitalization of Indonesian script culture is very possible to be popularized again.

Abstract

Background:  It is always attracted in choosing short story entitled “ A Ladybug prayer”, since the feels and story which really interesting and appreciate with structure of words, the sentence in English and limit from point of view in translator and translation, and how to find a good equality of meaning from the beginning in English into Indonesian. The Ladybug Prayer communicates a story around a boy who will “saved” in church. In spite of, he don’t identify or really know that he will saved from something, and finally, he knows about saved, through the ladybug prayer. This story, however based on true story. Sometimes you must be cautious and watch with what you pray of.Purpose: It is really interested to translate this story since the writer want to identify problems which are found in translating in the Ladybug prayer with the Indonesian version.Design and methods: The writer used the library in this research with reference to find and look for books that have relative and connection in translation and its connection in social, culture and information studies.Results: The short story entitled “A Ladybug prayer” has a very beautiful story with simple and complicated words.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground:  Teaching collocation to the students is not as easy as teaching grammar. Mastering collocation helps students to understand well the lesson given by the teachers and to use language to express their ideas properly.Purpose: This study aims to investigate to what extent text used as teaching media for studying collocation.Design and methods: A library research was done to gather information on teaching media for students that suitable for studying collocations for increasing language intuition.Results: The texts that commonly contain collocation is a newspaper feature, a film review, a website for tourists, conversations, lectures, songs, and films.
