Abstract

Maternal and child health problems cannot be separated from cultural factors in the society. One example of culture related to maternal and child health is the marapi tradition carried out by the puerperal mother in Manunggang Jae Village, Padangsidimpuan City. Marapi tradition is a tradition of fumigating or heating a mother who has just given birth and her baby for 40 days. This study aims to explore more information about the practice of postpartum maternal care in Manunggang Jae Village, Padangsidimpuan City. This research is a qualitative research with phenomenology design. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with 8 postpartum mothers, traditional leaders and health workers in October 2018 untill August 2019 in Manunggang Jae Village, Padangsidimpuan City. The results showed that postpartum maternal care was based on hereditary traditions, the types of care were fumigation of the mother and baby during puerperium and standing on a fireplace (manjonjongi api). The community believes this practice makes mothers recover faster and babies are stronger but in terms of health this tradition has a negative impact on the health of postpartum mothers and newborns.

Abstract

Production of smallholder rubber in Indonesia is still very low, in the range of 600 - 900 kg of dry rubber/ha/year. Many factors influence it, such as non-clonal plants still being managed. Other factors such as agronomic aspects which include efforts to shorten the TBM period either through agronomic technology (canopy management, fertilization, or ground water management) are still ignored by smallholder rubber farmers, due to the limited access, capital, and even the perception that rubber plant production will not experience significant increase through tapping systems. The main and first approach that must be taken at this time on smallholder rubber is a new technology in tapping and management. This activity was carried out by four meetings and training in the garden of one of the trainees. Trainees consisted of rubber farmers in Sari Laba Jahe Hamlet, which also included rubber farmers from Peria Ria Hamlet - Sibiru Biru Sub-district (Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra). The package of tapping technology introduction consists of 3 main elements, namely: 1) tapping starts from the upper left to the lower right in each tapping field, 2) the application of 2.5% stimulant concentration is carried out in the tapping groove every 4 tapping times and 3) tapping in a month can be combined with tapping 1/S to the top using a pacekung tapping knife. Thus, in a month done 4 times of double cut tapping, namely 1/2S (in the lower tapping area using an ordinary tapping knife, downward: pull method) + 1 / 4S (upward using a pacekung tapping knife: shearing method). The results of this activity show that it can increase the production, thereby increasing the volume of sap sold. This activity also shows that the dominant farmers manage 1 hectare of land, and with the planting year and planting material that have the potential to be increased in production through tapping systems. The survey results show that general knowledge about rubber cultivation is dominantly obtained from this activity.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem due to insufficient intake for a long time, in Indonesia the prevalence is high. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies if the length/height z score is below −2 SD. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between parenting, and nutrient intake (energy and protein) with stunting in children aged 24-59 years. This study used a cross sectional design with a sample of 117 children. Data collection was carried out with questionnaire instruments for parenting, and 24-hour food recall for nutritional intake. Data stunting was performed by comparing the height of the children measured by the WHO growth standards. Correlation analysis using Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that the prevalence of stunting for children aged 24-59 months was 50.4%. There was a significant correlation between parenting with stunting (r = 0.287 and p = 0.02), energy intake with stunting (r = 0.215 and p = 0.020) and protein intake with stunting (r = 0.354 and p = 0.0001). It is recommended that the Ministry of Health improve nutrition surveillance programs, and encourage the community to monitor the growth of children under five years every month in health services.

Abstract

Malaria is one of public health problems throughout the world, including Indonesia. Nationally, Annual Parasite Incidence (API) decreased to 0.99 per mil in 2017, but there are some malaria villages with API above the national rate. Batu Bara Regency is categorized as an endemic area and not malaria elimination with API of 0.47 per mil in 2018. The objective of the research was to analyze human resources, facility and infrastructure, and planning to decrease the incidence rate of malaria in Batu Bara Regency. The research used qualitative research method by conducting in-depth interviews with eight informants. The study found that there were no entomology assistant, malaria cadres for villages, and microscopist in the Health Agency, and of the 15 puskesmas (Primary Health Care), only five of them had microscopists. There was no transportation facility for personnel; there were only three spraycans although it should have been eight of them needed. Handling planning was not based on the mapping for detecting mosquito breeding places. The conclusion was that human resources were still unstandardized, there was no facility and infrastructure for malaria personnel. It’s suggested to mapping mosquito breeding and spraycans should be added.
