Linguistics and Literature Journal is a peer-reviewed journal published in Indonesia by the Faculty of Arts and Education, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. This journal aims to facilitate and promote the dissemination of scholarly information on research and development in the field of linguistics, literature, and language teaching and learning. The articles published in this journal can be the result of research, conceptual thinking, ideas, innovations, best practices, and book reviews. Abstract

This research paper describes the analysis of a literary work entitled The Home and The World by Rabindranath Tagore. This novel illustrates Tagore’s inner battle about his ideas on the Western culture and on the revolution against Western culture when India was colonized by the British. These ideas portrayed in one of the main characters, Nikhil. Tagore represents himself as Nikhil, the hybrid, who is positioned between British and Indian cultures. The main purpose of this research is to describe the hybrid identity of Nikhil as one of the main characters in the novel within the context of colonized society and the Swadeshi movement. This research applied the post-colonial approach and hybrid identity theory by Homi. K. Bhabha and also applied the descriptive qualitative method to depict the problem by using the words. Library research was applied in the context of the data collecting process. The data are dialogues and narrations about the hybrid identity of Nikhil in The Home and The World novel. Based on the research conducted, it was concluded that the impact of British colonialism led to the formation of a hybrid identity process in Indian society. First, there was a hybrid identity of Nikhil as a part of the colonized society in education, lifestyle, culture, and social aspects. Abstract

This research discusses two series of Harry Potter’s movies entitled “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” the fourth series and “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix” the fifth series. This research aims to show the portrayal of the trickster archetype that could be seen in some characters inside the movies. In this research, the writers apply descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the scenes inside of the movies and the dialogue. In this research, the writers apply Archetype theories by Carl Jung and movie analysis theory by Pratista. In analysing the movie, the writer also uses a table by Nurmaily. The result of the research shows that Harry Potter Movies, the fourth series and the fifth series written by J.K Rowling, depict the existence of trickster archetype. There are two characters, the supporting characters, that portrayed the characterization of a trickster archetype, They are George and Fred. They reveal the characterization which are the characteristics of trickster archetype, such as mischievous, smart, cunning and creative; and disobedient.Keywords: Archetype, literary work, trickster, Harry Potter

Abstract

Humor has been studied from different disciplinary viewpoints including philosophy, psychology, sociology, literature, rhetoric, linguistic and others by many scholars and experts. Thus, with the development of humor study, the linguistic perspective is becoming the mainstream of thoughts because it is more applicable and more systematic. In that case, to understand the pattern of communication in humor, the study of pragmatic is needed. Therefore, this research is aimed to analyze humor that are produced in The Big Bang Theory (a famous sitcom in America) from the perspective of cognition and communication. The analysis is done by applying descriptive method and using Sperber and Wilson’s theory of relevance theory. As the result of the analysis, it shows that there is a lot of humors that are based on relevance communication so that the application of relevance theory must be applied in order to understand the context of the humor. Further, the writer also noticed that the form of verbal humor used in The Big Bang Theory mostly showing about common problems and drama situation such friendship, job and daily life. In addition, regarding to the relevance theory of communication, the writer also noticed that the mechanism of humor in The Big Bang Theory is using the moment of optimal relevance of cognitive principle which means that when the audience has a common presumption of a context of conversation, the speaker or the characters in the sitcom is producing or uttering something unexpected in order to make the audience laugh or joy in humor.Keywords: context of humor, humor, pragmatic, relevance theory

Abstract

Speech plays an important role to shape public perception as it is delivered by an influential figure and reflects the points of view of its speaker. This study discusses a speech delivered by the United States President, Donald Trump, which discusses the conflict between Iran and America. This study was conducted to reveal the representation of Iran and the United States in one of Donald Trump’s speeches. The method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that indicate the position of Iran and the United States taken from the speech transcript from the official website of The White House. Data were analyzed under the framework of Van Djik’s Socio-Cognitive Approach, consisting of text, socio-cognitive, and social context. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that Iran is described as a country that has nuclear ambitions and acts of terror that support the existence of terrorists. On the other hand, America is described as having an invincible power. At a socio-cognitive level, Donald Trump is considered a knowledgeable figure on his country’s political condition because he knows the weaknesses of Iran and can properly take every decision. Donald Trump also has the authority as a President to make The United States and the countries of the world can work together for peace world. Thus, from the level of social context, countries in the world support the actions taken by America and are very alarming about what Iran has done. The finding suggests that the Socio-cognitive approach is practical to analyze the representation of an issue in speech reflected in linguistics expression and the discourse structure.

Abstract

In delivering an argument, several things must be known, such as the theme, the purpose, and the content of the argument in a debate. Since debate demands critical thinking, debaters need to consider their words’ choice in delivering their argument. In that case, this research aims to analyze the uses of interactional metadiscourse markers that are applied in the Bloomberg International Debate. In doing the analysis, the writers used the descriptive method and proposed Hyland’s theory (2005). As the result of the research, it shows that the most speaker who is producing interactional metadiscourse markers is Ella Cox, followed by John Allan and then Ndidie Okezie and finally Auday and Rus Ma. Although there are three speakers in each team (both proposition and opposition), it seems that the third person on each team only as support and the one who then summarizes the result of the debate for each team. Further, related to the uses of interactional metadiscourse, the most used of the interactional dimension markers is self-mention, followed by booster, hedges, and booster.Keywords: Bloomberg, critical thinking, debate, interactional metadiscourse, metadiscourse markers

Abstract

in this article, the writers aim to look deeper into the ideology used by L-men advertising management in making L-men advertisement which mostly used male casting and other topless act. Using critical discourse analysis, the article focus on the implicit messages convey by the L-men advertisement that it conveys about the toxic masculinity behavior in gaining men dominance is equal to have a strong and muscular body. This study uses the Fairclough model of analysis, that in the shown that the creator of the advertisement-supported the current represe about gaining muscle to gain dominance, and the society ignorance towards the issue and only look advertisement as it sells product only.

Abstract

This paper analyzes grammatical cohesion in Boris Johnson’s Speech entitled coronavirus spread in UK. This research is aims to find out which types of grammatical cohesion is the most used in the speech. The research method is qualitative research and the researcher used theories from Halliday and Hasan (1976) to analyze the cohesion. Data of this research is the speech video of Boris Johnson posted in BBC news Youtube channel on May 2020. The researcher found that the grammatical cohesion used in Boris Johnson’s speech about coronavirus spread in UK are reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. There are 181 references, 2 substitutions, 2 ellipses and 80 conjunctions. The dominant kinds of cohesion in this speech there is reference with the total 181 and divided into three types: personal reference (122), demonstrative reference (50) and comparative reference (9). The use of cohesion is needed to make those messages is acceptable, a series of sentences, a choice of words must be integrated with each other so that the essence of the message communicated can be conveyed.Keywords: Discourse, grammatical cohesion, speech

Abstract

The poem has the role of the media to deliver the author’s opinion, messages, and feeling towards certain phenomena to the readers by using literary language. The idea of those poems needs to be interpreted by the readers and it is dealing with meaning. Problems occur when there is the literary language used by the author since not all the reader can understand the implicit meaning inside the poems which certainly used figurative language, especially metaphor. Thus, the study entitled Metaphorical Expressions in Emily Dickinson’s Poems aimed to find the metaphor inside three poems by Emily Dickinson entitled I Felt a Funeral in My Brain, Because I could Not Stop for Death and I Heard a Fly Buzz – when I Died. This study also aimed to identify the implicit meaning behind those metaphors. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson, they are structural metaphor, ontological metaphor, and orientational metaphor. To answer the second research question, the researcher used the theory of meaning by I. A Richard. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and stylistic approach, in which the researcher focuses on the aesthetic function of the language. In this research, the researcher found 17 metaphorical expressions divided into 5 types of metaphor there are: entity metaphor 4 data, structural metaphor 5 data, orientation metaphor 1 data, container metaphor 1data and personification 6 data.

Abstract

This research analyzes English Idioms which are equivalent in Indonesian Idioms especially idioms inrelation to human body. This research is conducted due to limited research on contrastive analysis in bothlanguages in the field of semantics. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Thedata in this research are idioms in English which have an equivalent in Indonesian idioms and vice versataken from dictionary of idioms and websites discussing idioms in both languages. Data are analyzed underthe framework of idiom classification by Fernando (1996) and types of contrastive analysis by Lado (1957).Based on the analysis that has been done, it can be concluded that mostly the equivalence of English andIndonesian idioms are in the form of pure idioms. In the level of contrastive analysis, the idioms arecategorized into three. The first is idioms in Indonesian and English which have similar meanings andsimilar forms of expressions. The second is idioms in Indonesian and English which have different meaningsbut similar forms of expressions. The third is idioms in Indonesian and English which have similarmeanings but different forms of expressions. The causes of similarities between the two idioms betweenEnglish and Indonesian is cultural factors between English and Indonesian in terms of percieving human body.Keywords: contrastive analysis, English Idiom, Indonesian Idiom, human body.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the way both BBC News and The Jakarta Post representing the news about Reynhard Sinaga using the theory from Van Leeuwen. This research implemented a descriptive qualitative method as it is more suitable to analyze the data. The data are in the form of words. The data were gathered from BBC News and The Jakarta Post online versions about Reynhad Sinaga rape case. The findings revealed that both media use the inclusion strategy to decide which information chosen as their base references to represent Reynhard Sinaga. This suggests that BBC UK tends to use inclusion strategy to quote statement from different parties about Reynhard Sinaga and to inform the readers about how severe his sexual assaults' cases are. Meanwhile, The Jakarta Post tends to use inclusion strategy to compare Indonesian media news in publishing his case and to give clear depiction about the difference between Reynhard Sinaga's case to other heterosexual's crime cases. Further, this research could be used as an overview for the readers about the type of strategy used by certain journalists who represent certain person, case, or an ideology through the arrangement of words that are used in text.Keywords: CDA, representation, reynhard sinaga, van leeuwen
