Abstract

This study’s purpose is to describe the importance of tone indicators in computer-mediated communication through gathering the opinions of high school students. This study employed a generic qualitative approach that allowed us to comprehend five students' perspectives on tone indicators. A thematic analysis helped us to identify significant statements, generate initial themes, formulate, and name relevant themes. The results showed that the participants of the study are not fully aware of tone indicators. In fact, the tone indicators are important, especially facing the problems and applying for facing special needs people. Their narratives indicate that misidentified tones of messages stimulate preconceptions to form in the minds of virtual readers, leading to miscommunication. The students expressed relief, enlightenment, and approval upon the introduction and application of tone indicators. They described the roles of tone indicators as tools to make messages clear. Therefore, tone indicators hold relevance in computer-mediated communication. This study promotes tone indicators awareness and tranquility in online communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the drilling method application using abacus in improving arithmetic subtraction operations skills in deaf children. This study used an experimental method with Single Subject Research (SSR), A-B-A design. The drilling method was used in the learning process. In addition, the abacus media was also used in the subtraction arithmetic operation material in learning mathematics. The results showed that there was an effect of applying the drilling method using abacus in improving the arithmetic subtraction operation skills in deaf children with the initials SS. This could be seen from the increase in the mean level of student’s abilities starting from baseline-1 (A1) by 30%, intervention (B) by 65%, and baseline-2 (A2) by 86.66%. The methods and media were suitable to make the lesson easier to understand for students. The drilling method with the abacus media could be used as an alternative for teachers in improving the skills of arithmetic subtraction operations in deaf children. The results of this study are expected to contribute to developing special education related to the application of the drilling method using abacus media to improve arithmetic operations skills in learning next math.

Abstract

Assistive Technology (AT) is a technology used by individuals with disabilities to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. ATs are integrated into teaching and learning procedures to overcome the challenges faced by students with disabilities in educational institutions. The population of this study consisted of all the special students in Ilorin, Kwara State School for special needs. A random sampling technique was employed to select 100 students who constitute the sample size of this study. The findings of the study showed that deaf, blind, physical disability, learning disability, and language disorder are being catered for in the school,  assistive technologies are available for all the special students in the school, majority of the students used the assistive technologies for learning, there is a significant difference in the level of utilization of assistive technologies for learning among the special students based on gender, and there is a significant difference in the level of utilization of assistive technologies for learning among special students based on age. This study concluded that basic disabilities are being catered for in the sample special school with appropriate assistive technologies, and the technologies are found to be adequately available for the students. The study, therefore, recommended that the ministry of education should put in place, seminars, workshops, conferences, and training for special education teachers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the preferred mode of interaction of generation Z. There are four novelties: (1) To understand the percentage of students who prefer social media as a medium of social interaction, (2) To know the percentage of students who prefer face-to-face interaction, (3) To comprehend what medium do they prefer to use when they are discussing their courtship involvement, academic matters, personal issues, interpersonal relational conflicts, sex-related matters, and (4) To know the reasons for students' preference in terms of mode of Interaction. The study used a mixed-method approach, employed explanatory design, and used simple random sampling in choosing the 76 respondents/participants from the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) students. A survey and an interview were conducted to compare face-to-face interaction and social media interaction as the primary mode of interaction. The results showed that 60 students prefer face-to-face interaction over 76 students, with a frequency of 78.94% out of 100%. It is concluded that most of the students prefer face-to-face social interaction rather than social media. This study has an impact on Generation Z, as it serves as a realization of their social activeness in interaction as well as on the community. Also, it will help society understand how Generation Z compares to other generations by being the generation most affected by technology and its rapidly evolving form of communication, as well as the loss of their ability to communicate.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement of science learning outcomes on the subject of animal life cycles through the use of Powerpoint media for students with hearing impairment. the method used is classroom action research using demonstration learning methods, giving assignments, and asking questions. The subjects of this study were 4  students with hearing impairment at the Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri Bekasi Jaya, Indonesia. The results showed that student learning outcomes have increased so that it exceeds the Minimum Completeness Criteria that have been set, namely 80. This happens because the Powerpoint media used is easily understood by students. This study demonstrates that the use of Powerpoint media is easy to understand and attracts students' attention, thereby accelerating students' understanding, especially deaf students, about the life cycle of animals. In addition, Powerpoint media will also make it easier for teachers to guide students, especially for students with hearing impairment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the teaching, curriculum, and methods used by teachers in the science learning process for students with special needs in Indonesia. We use qualitative research methods. The subjects in this study are students with special needs (children with visual impairments, children with hearing impairments, children with intellectual disabilities, and children with physical impairments) at one of the special schools (SLB) in Kuningan, Indonesia. The results show that most of the teachers use the curriculum from teacher books provided by the government. In addition, some teachers used the lecture and question and answer method in the science learning process. Abstract

All special students need to learn adequately so that their deviation from the norm will not demerit them from other students. Thus, there is a need for them to have enough learning tools which will help them achieve their academic goals. These technologies that aided the learning of special students are called low-technological devices. But when these technologies for special students are not sufficiently available, learning could be jeopardized. This study, therefore, investigates the available low-technological devices for learning in special secondary schools. This study employs the survey method and 150 secondary school students from special schools were purposively sampled. The findings established that revealed that Stylus, Picture symbols, Pocket dictionary/thesaurus, and Line guide are Highly available to the respondents but Wrist Rest, Signalling Device, Graph paper, and Adjustable Table and Hearing Aids are moderately available to the respondents accordingly. The study concluded that some recent and high technological devices are not adequately available. It was however recommended that Government should provide adequate funding to improve the availability and affordability of assistive technology for children with disabilities.
