<![CDATA[This study examines how phonology and online media used to enhance students’ listening skill. The data were collected for 5 months starting from April to August 2020 in Islamic State Institute of Tulungagung (IAIN Tulungagung). The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. It involves college students who study and major English and have the relevant information about the research theme. It consist of 196 students of 3rd semester in IAIN Tulungagung. The finding reveals that there are some perspectives of students about the use of phonology and online media to enhance listening skill such as: the importance of online learning English media, online learning English media towards students’ attitudes in learning, the effect of online learning English media towards inferential listening, and media enhancing inferential listening skill. It was also gained students’ responses towards phonology used to enhance listening skill.]]>

<![CDATA[This research examines TV advertisements for beauty products on local TV from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. This research mainly focuses on the use of language in beauty advertisements and the strategies used by advertisers to manipulate and influence their customers. This analysis is based on Fairclough's three-dimensional framework, which shows how the ideology of “beauty” is produced and reproduced through advertisements on TV. Qualitative research was conducted on beauty product advertisements from ten TV advertisements for beauty products in 2019. The advertisements taken and analyzed were advertisements for facial beauty products from various brands and types. The findings suggest that advertisers use a variety of strategies to manipulate women. Advertising language is used to control people's thoughts. The better the words the advertisers used to manipulate the viewers, the better reaction that they will get from the viewers. This research shows advertisers are not only promoting their products but highlighting society's standards of beauty and cultural values into the viewers’ lifestyle and how the TV advertisements have shaped the beauty ideology of social practice in Indonesia.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to explore the strengths and weaknesses of extensive reading using Wattpad platform based on students’ perceptions. Extensive reading allows students to have more variation in their reading materials as they can read authentic texts from various sources that it is actually applied outside the class room for most people consider it as joyful reading. The advancement of technology over the times enables people to do many activities online, including extensive reading activity. Hence, Wattpad is believed to provide enormous free and paid reading materials that can support extensive reading for the students. To achieve the objectives, this study is in the form of case study. The data were collected through in-depth interview with the participants. The participants were two undergraduate students majoring English Education from two different universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected purposively because they were known to have been doing extensive reading activity on Wattpad for a quite long time, specifically for five years. The research findings showed several strengths of using Wattpad for extensive reading such as Wattpad gives students numerous and various sources of reading materials; extensive reading on Wattpad is a fun and enjoyable experience; extensive reading on Wattpad is more practical than using printed-books; extensive reading on Wattpad is money-saving; the reading materials on Wattpad have good quality contents; extensive reading through Wattpad improves students English’s skills unconsciously as well as the reading habit. Meanwhile, there are several weaknesses of extensive reading using Wattpad according to students such as; similarities in the reading materials sometimes make them boring to read; using the platform for a certain long time can potentially cause tired eyes; there are other distractions that can disrupt the extensive reading activity.]]>

<![CDATA[Graphic organizers are used in ELT classroom to help the students learn better. It refers to the way the students use graphic organizers in writing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of graphic organizers on ELT students’ writing quality. This study was a quasi-experimental research design. The experimental group was taught by using graphic organizers. The control group was administered by using conventional strategy. The participants of the research were the second semester students of English Department, in one of the private universities in Madiun. The data were analyzed by utilizing independent t-test and one-way ANOVA based on the level of significance at .05. The result of the study shows that there is a significant difference between the mean scores of the students in the experimental and control groups. The students who are taught by using graphic organizers are better than the students who are taught using conventional strategy. The students in the experimental group perform better on writing quality in terms of content, vocabulary, and mechanics than those who do in the control group. It can be concluded that graphic organizers have a significant effect on ELT students’ writing quality. It is effective to be used in order to help the students write better. The students are successful in generating the ideas of writing and it can create a social community. We recommend for the future researchers to realize other various graphic organizer models into research.]]>

<![CDATA[The objectives of this study were to investigate teachers’ professional development, the obstacles faced by the teachers, teachers’ efforts to resolve the obstacles, and school support for the teachers in continuing professional development. To reveal the phenomenon, qualitative case study design was used. This study combined observation, questionnaires, and interviews in data collection. English teachers, vice-principal of the curriculum, teachers who taught other subjects, and students who had been taught by the English teachers were the participants of this study. Findings revealed that English teachers’ professional development was good. The results also revealed that teachers’ scientific publications were in the poor category. Innovative works for both English teachers were in the average category. Lack of time and information were the obstacles faced by the English teachers in continuing professional development. Teachers attempted to resolve the obstacles by looking for information needed through the internet. They also had discussions with other teachers to gain information for their knowledge. The school frequently conducted some programs related to teachers’ professional development and allowed them to attend professional development activities held by other institutions.]]>

<![CDATA[In a globalization era, everything depends on technology. Technology has been developing in the role of teaching and learning process. This study aimed to find out: (1) the teachers’ perception of ICT use in their teaching and learning process; (2) to evaluate the progress of ICT integration program during the last five years at the school;(3) the problems faced by the teacher and students in using the ICT in the classroom; and (4) effects of using ICT in teaching and learning process. Twelve students and two teachers of English were chosen using purposive sampling as the respondents. Method of the study was descriptive qualitative research. The questionnaire, interview, observation, and documentation were used to collect the data. The results of the study showed that first, the teachers had positive attitude toward the use of ICT; second, the integration of ICT was found from the school’s facilities, the teachers’ participation in attending seminar and trainings, and the use of ICT for assignments in and outside the classrooms; third, the number of computers and a power blackout were the problems faced by both teachers and students; and fourth, from the questionnaires and interview, the teachers and students claimed that the ICT had great influence in teaching and learning process.]]>

<![CDATA[The need for integrating digital technology into learning instructions has been acknowledge as a most prominent aspect in 21st Century learning. With emerging technology rising in prevalence, a digital consciousness to select and manage digital resources safely, appropriately, and efficiently for digital learning instruction is crucial. This present study is intended to explore teachers’ beliefs in the integration of digital literacy in EFL classroom using Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB) perspectives. The study was a qualitative study by means of case study research design to obtain a reliable understanding of the phenomenon. The data were collected using semi-structured interview, open-ended survey, and documentation. The data were retrieved from the purposively chosen informants based on the familiarity with digital technology. The results indicate relatively high levels of integration and consistent beliefs about the advantages, support from the environment, and the technology availability to integrate digital literacy into teaching learning activities. Recommendations are suggested to advance schools equipment to mediate the better support in constructing technology-enhanced classroom for teachers.]]>

<![CDATA[A well-designed textbook can enhance the teaching and learning of a foreign language and it should also consider the authenticity aspect of the target language. This paper aims at studying the use of future tense markers (i.e. will, be going to) in three EFL textbooks for senior high school in Indonesia and comparing to one of the biggest English corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English, to investigate the authenticity of the textbooks. This study employs corpus-based analysis as it focuses on the frequency and collocates of future tense markers. This study, however, delimits the scope in conversations of the textbooks and the spoken sub-corpus. It shows that, although ‘will’ and ‘be going to’ are used in the textbooks and the corpus, there are some distinctions observed, be they the frequency of use or the collocates preceding the future tense markers. As for the semantic of the verb collocates, there seem to have many differences. These differences then need to be revisited and re-evaluated to improve Indonesian EFL textbooks materials to equip the English learners in a foreign language context with actual language use.]]>

<![CDATA[Numerous studies have been conducted on the item test analysis in English test. However, investigation on the characteristics of a good test of English final semester test is still rare in several districts in East Java. This research sought to examine the quality of the English final semester test in the academic year of 2018/2019 in Ponorogo. A total of 151 samples in the form of students’ answers to the test were analysed based on item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractors’ effectiveness using Quest program. This descriptive quantitative research revealed that the test does not have good proportion among easy, medium, and difficult item. In the item discrimination, the test had 39 excellent items (97.5%) which meant that the test could discriminate among high and low achievers. Besides, the distractors could distract students since there were 32 items (80%) that had effective distractors. The findings of this research provided insights that item analysis became important process in constructing test. It related to find the quality of the test that directly affects the accuracy of students’ score.]]>

<![CDATA[Studying the second language (L2) was happens around the world because of some reasons such as education. Studying another language can be important in intellectual human activities after studying first language (L1). However using L2 is quite hard because some of them use L2 just for some their activities, not for the whole of their activities, such as students who use English only when studying English subject only or on the contrary. Nowadays, some people use two language at the same time, which is called code mixing. The use of two codes for communication can help them to make clear their explanation from another language that they used. The purpose of this research is concerning on the use of code mixing in college students’ presentation in Intercultural Communication class. Apart from that, there is an attempt to find out the language dominate in their presentation, the reasons of code mixing use in their presentation and the response of the audience about code mixing in presentation. The Method use is qualitative by using class presentation as the instrument, the writer collected the data of the college students’ presentation, questionnaire to the audience and interview to the presenters. The research findings showed that the languages dominate in the presentation are English language and Bahasa Indonesia equally. The reasons’ student in use code mixing is to make the explanation clear, and the response of the audience is 56.83% of the students give positive response in using code mixing of the presenter.]]>
