Abstract

The issue of the use of code switching as instructional languages in the class has already become a worldwide concern. Some experts may say that it is beneficial while others believe that it is not since it may become the interference for the learning. Through this paper, the researchers want to investigate the use of code switching in General English Classes for non-English Department of Sanata Dharma University. Employing a quantitative approach, specifically observation method by recording the class activity, this study tries to find out the types and analyse code switching employed by lecturers in the classes. The data analyses revealed that tag switching, intra-sentential and inter-sentential code switching are employed by lecturers and the code switching itself functions as the topic switch, repetitive and affective function. The inter-sentential code switching was mostly used by the lecturer and it mostly served as a repetitive function to explain and show their affection to students

Abstract

Initially, communication is set up by listening. Students need the ability of listening skill for educational purposes and prepare themselves in social life. This study had the objective to investigate the perceptions of the teachers about the existing listening materials at the vocational high schools in Indonesia. In this study, the researcher engaged seventeen teachers of vocational high schools in Indonesia to be the participants. Data were collected by distributing a questionnaire then followed by an interview toward two participants. The results showed that listening materials met students’ needs, supported by the process of the scientific approach, were appropriate with the objective of the study and students' level of English, related to the syllabus of the 2013 curriculum model included the topic learned. On other hand, listening materials did not improve students’ ability in English, monotonous, made students having less focus, difficult to understand, difficult to build students’ prior knowledge, boring, and uninteresting. Finally, as the teachers’ view, the use of video could be the solution to the problems.

Abstract

A well-designed textbook can enhance the teaching and learning of a foreign language and it should also consider the authenticity aspect of the target language. This paper aims at studying the use of future tense markers (i.e. will, be going to) in three EFL textbooks for senior high school in Indonesia and comparing to one of the biggest English corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English, to investigate the authenticity of the textbooks. This study employs corpus-based analysis as it focuses on the frequency and collocates of future tense markers. This study, however, delimits the scope in conversations of the textbooks and the spoken sub-corpus. It shows that, although ‘will’ and ‘be going to’ are used in the textbooks and the corpus, there are some distinctions observed, be they the frequency of use or the collocates preceding the future tense markers. As for the semantic of the verb collocates, there seem to have many differences. These differences then need to be revisited and re-evaluated to improve Indonesian EFL textbooks materials to equip the English learners in a foreign language context with actual language use.

Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on the item test analysis in English test. However, investigation on the characteristics of a good test of English final semester test is still rare in several districts in East Java. This research sought to examine the quality of the English final semester test in the academic year of 2018/2019 in Ponorogo. A total of 151 samples in the form of students’ answers to the test were analysed based on item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractors’ effectiveness using Quest program. This descriptive quantitative research revealed that the test does not have good proportion among easy, medium, and difficult item. In the item discrimination, the test had 39 excellent items (97.5%) which meant that the test could discriminate among high and low achievers. Besides, the distractors could distract students since there were 32 items (80%) that had effective distractors. The findings of this research provided insights that item analysis became important process in constructing test. It related to find the quality of the test that directly affects the accuracy of students’ score.

Abstract

Translation shifts are one of strategy to get a high-quality translation. It’s also used to solve the absent meaning on the target text. The objectives of this research are to describe the translation shifts (based on the theory of Blum-Kulka about kinds of shift and Halliday and Matthiesen on cohesion theory), which are done by machine translation in descriptive texts. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research design to achieve the aims of this research. The source of data in this research is descriptive text. The data of this research are pair of words in source and target text. The form of words (pair of words in source and target) are in reference form based on the theory of Halliday about lexical devices. The researcher used interactive data analysis (data condensation, data display, and verifying/conclusion) to get the research findings. This research shows that Yandex translation made translation shifts more (35 times) often than the others. From the whole types of translation shifts (cohesion shifts: implicitation, explicitation, and meaning change), implicitation shift placed a high frequency among machines translation, however explicitation shift placed in the low frequency, and the medium frequency is placed by meaning change. It is to indicate that machine translation still lacks to produce a high level in the target than a source.

Abstract

The study aims to study travel agent students' perception and needs toward English reading materials used in English learning at Vocational High School. Two sets of questionnaires were used to collect the data of the study. The first set of the questionnaire was used to find out students' perceptions, and the other one was used to analyze the needs of the students. The needs analysis was done based on four aspects of needs assessment: TSA, PSA, Deficiency Analysis, and Strategy Analysis. Afterwards, the obtained data were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicated that the students viewed English as an essential subject to learn.  Furthermore, the students also perceived that integrating technology and Palembang culture into the English reading materials (textbook) was important in this 21st-century era. Besides, the students also believed that the current materials learned at school were not yet suitable for their needs, and they currently had difficulties learning English. In addition, the students hoped the reading materials contained the 21st-century skills and their local cultures related to their major. Based on the needs analysis results, further steps were necessary to provide the English reading materials integrated to Palembang local culture, which could facilitate students to improve their English proficiency in line with their department and the demands of the 21st century.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a single case study of an EFL teacher’s code switching which involved three languages including English, Indonesian, and Javanese in a young learners’ class. More specifically, this qualitative study aimed to analyze the teacher’s types of code switching and functions of her code switching in the teaching and learning process. Data from classroom observations, teacher’s interview, students’ interview, and students’ questionnaire showed that all of the teacher’s code switching were conversational and based on the structure of her switching; she did inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag switching. Further, those different types of code switching served four positive functions for the EYL teaching. Those included strategy to deliver clear material explanations, strategy to deliver clear task instruction, strategy to give encouragement, and strategy for disciplining the students.

Abstract

Over the last 10 years, much research has been completed in the area of English language policy in Thailand. The majority of studies have focused on the pedagogy and methods involved in the teaching practices of Thai EFL educators at primary school level (Prapaisit de Segovia & Hardison, 2009; Tongpoon-Patanasorn, 2011) and secondary school level (Darasawang & Watson Todd, 2012; Nonkukhetkhong, Baldauf, & Moni, 2006). The present study delves deeper into teaching practices and addresses how English language policy is perceived and interpreted at the classroom level through the practices of Thai English teachers in a rural government secondary school in the northeast part of the country. To date, there is only one study which examines the impact of English language policy in the core curriculum on the teaching practices of EFL teachers at both primary and secondary school level has been completed (Fitzpatrick, 2011).In an effort to frame the present study, we apply Hornberger’s (2006) integrative framework as an attempt to support case study methodology. This approach provided us the opportunity to research “one or more instances of a phenomenon in its real-life context that reflect the perspective of the participants involved in the phenomenon” (Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2007, p. 447). And, it offered a grounded view of how this English language policy is being enacted in Thailand.

Abstract

The primary aim of this paper is to investigate students’ difficulty in the implementation of genre-based approach to teach English skills. It focuses on approximation exercise. The author reported the result of the study in the form of qualitative data. The practice revealed that the students faced difficulty to start writing their ideas. In this point, the students who have quite good English proficiency felt easy in constructing the text without employing elementary sentences. It happens although their text construction is somehow not grammatically correct. On the other hand, for those who have low English proficiency, the incorporation of elementary sentences and final realization help them a lot in constructing the text effectively. In a nutshell, the students in high and low English proficiency have their own difficulty in putting their ideas in the form of a text. Teacher’s assistance is crucial in developing students’ skill independently. Finally, this pedagogical practice might become the teacher’s guidance in practicing genre-based approached in the classroom.

Abstract

The Javanese language belongs to language which has unique phonological system. There are so many foreign language has influenced the development of Javanese. This study is intended to examine the sound change of borrowing word of foreign language in Javanese which is found in Panjebar Semangat magazine. The data is taken from Panjebar and checked using old Javanese dictionary. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research and used Simak method and Non Participant Observation in collecting the data. The data analysis is done by using Padan method. The result of the study reveals three sound changes of vowels sound and four phonological rules. Then, there are four types of sound change and four phonological rule of consonant sound. The result showed that the sound change of borrowing word in Javanese is influenced by the differences of phonological system between Javanese and the foreign language.
