Abstract

In Modern life, peoples are more conscious to keep their healthy. One of the way to keep our body healthy is by keeping our hand clean. Washing hands with soap and water, sometimes is unpractical since it need water to rinse off the soap. Prod-uct innovation has been developed to overcome the unpractical side, which is called antiseptic hand wash or hand sanitizer. This study has been done to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of some hand sanitizer products marketed in Jakarta. The re-sult showed that alcohol-based hand sanitizer and triclosan-based hand sanitizer used in this experiment were significantly reduce bacterial counts on hands, but not all of the samples are effective in reducing fungal counts on hands.

Abstract

The use of synthetic food colorants is increasing because of its advantages. However, it is found that not all food colorants which are sold in the market are safe to be consumed. The purpose of this research was to identify synthetic food colorant samples which are sold in market and to find out whether they contain safe food colorants or not. Extraction did not need to be done on samples. Analysis was done using color reaction and paper chromatography. Densitometry was done to support the identification result. The result of this research showed that 10 out of 31 samples that were tested contain synthetic food colorants that must not be used for food. The ten samples were seven red colorants (three samples containing Merah K4, the two others containing Rhodamine B, and two samples containing Scarlet GN), one orange colorant (containing Orange G), one yellow colorant (containing Metanil Yellow) and one chocolate colorant (containing Chocolate Brown FB).

Abstract

Phytoestrogen is the chemical compound contains in plant which has estro-genic like effect. Estrogen has important function on woman’s sexual organ, such as proliferation of uterine and vaginal cornification. Phytoestrogen are weak agonists for estrogen and illicit statistic significantly increases in uterine wet weight, at definite dose, in uterothrophic bioassay. Biji Klabet or Fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) contains steroidal sapogenins such as diosgenin, tigogenin, gitogenin, yamogenin and trigoneoside, that suspected having an estrogen-like ef-fect or as phytoestrogen. The aim of this research was to investigate the estrogenic effect of fenugreek’s ethanolic extract in ovariectomized and immature rats models. These models represent the climacteric/menopause phase, where estrogen level is very low because ovary produces no estrogen. The testing animals were divided into normal group, ovariectomized control group, estradiol control group and three level doses of fenugreek extract (30mg/200gBW; 60mg/200gBW and 120mg/200gBW). The result indicated that start on 60mg/200gBW, fenugreek extract significantly could increasing mammary gland proliferation. Empirically fenugreek containing diosgenin, that caused breast enhancement. This research showed that treatment with fenugreek extract can caused proliferation of mammary gland, both on imma-ture and ovariectomized rats.

Abstract

The study of inhibitory activity against the a-glucosidase enzyme of Kalanchoe pinnata Pers. leaves has been carried out. In vitro, the methanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and methanol-water (1:1) fraction inhibited a-glucosidase enzyme activities with IC50 value 72.8, 982.6, 194.6 and 293.8 ug/mL, respectively. In vivo, the study was conducted in normal ddY mice by using oral glucose tolerance test. The administration of methanol extract dose 0.5, 1.0 g/kg of body weight and ethyl acetate fraction dose 1.0 g/kg of body weight can suppress the blood glucose level at 30 min significantly (p<0.05) if compared with control after oral administration of sucrose (3 g/kg of body weight), and their activity were similar with acarbose 0.01 g/kg of body weight (p>0.05).

Abstract

The determination of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and triprolidine hydro-chloride in influenza syrup medicine has been performed using TLC densitometric method. Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and triprolidine hydrochloride were extracted using chloroform at pH 12 from the syrup, and separated using HPTLC silica Kie-selguhr glass plates 60 F 254, 20x10 cm2 as stationary phase, and a mixture of methanol, ammonia and chloroform (40:2:30) as mobile phase. The plates were ana-lyzed using Camag TLC Scanner 3 with UV-detector at 257 nm for pseudoephe-drine hydrochloride and at 290 nm for triprolidine hydrochloride. The results showed that the linearity, limit of detection, and limit of quantitation of the method for pseudoephedrine hydrochloride were 0.9999, 0.0064 µg, and 0.2124 µg respectively; while for triprolidine hydrochloride were 0.9999, 0.0076 µg, and 0.0254 µg respec-tively. The coefficient of variance (CV) of repeatability for the two substances were less than 2.0%; and the recovery values for pseudoepherine hydrochloride and triprolidine hydrochloride were 99.98 + 1.05% and 99.73 + 1,54% respectively. The result showed that the samples analysed contained pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 94.36% of the labeled ammount, and triprolidine hydrochloride 94.44% of the la-beled ammount.

Abstract

In pharmaceutical process, milling is a common process to produce particle in certain expectation size. Impact of milling process could lead to physical interaction. Dissolution rate will change as an impact of physical interaction. To observe physical interaction between methampyrone and phenylbutazone during milling process, is needed to analyze its X-ray diffractogram, DSC thermogram and dissolution rate. Data of X-ray diffractogram, differential scanning calorimetry and dissolution test, showed that physical interaction occurred after 5,5 hours and 18 hours of milling and cause enhancement of dissolution rate of phenylbutazone. Dissolution rate of methampyrone was constant after 5,5 hours of milling. Decreasing dissolution rate of methampyrone occured after 18 hours of milling.
