Abstract

Ethnic and religious conflicts and violence have spread throughout the archipelago, not only in the last few years, but also since the independence of the Republic (1945). They look like a 'repetitive ritual' of the people and it seems that nobody nor any institution could stop them, neither the government. How- ever, there are always people of good will who try to minimize the tension of the conflicts and the victims of all these indiscriminate violence. This article tries to examine the problem from the mission and pastoral perspective of the Church, namely, from her fundamental and main call to build up peace throughout the country. Therefore, issues on ethnic-religious conflicts, violence and peace should be the core of the Church's mission agenda for the coming few decades.

Abstract

The relation between faith and reason has become an important issue since the rise of Christianity. When Christianity began to introduce a set of revealed truths, the authoritative power of reason was restricted by the necessity of faith in the absolute truth of Christian Revelation. As such that it substituted the role of philosophy as the way of life and the wisdom. Philosophy lost its autonomous status and hardly existed on its own. The use of philosophy was restricted to the service for defending and articulating the truth of faith as to be the handmaid for theology. However, for Etienne Gilson, The Middle Ages, which is also known the darkness era of Philosophy, provides its own dimension to characterize the unique identity of philosophy. He describes as "the spirit of Christianity penetrating the Greek tradition, working within it, drawing out of it a certain view of the world, specifically Christian," which is called "Christian Philosophy." Is Christian Philosophy a philosophy? How about the term itself? Does it seems to be self-destroying?

Abstract

Fr. Norbert Shadeg, SVD (1921-2006), an American by birth, was one of the longest foreign missionaries worked in Bali, a place he loved so dearly and the people he served so passionately. For 56 years he spent his priestly life in his allur new 'adopted home' not only for the local Church but also for the host culture, hopes its people and language, its customs and religiosity, etc. His works are highly Fappreciated by many, his colleagues, friends, Christian congregations and his confreres of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD). His dictionaries are used per worldwide, such as 'A Basic Balinese Vocabulary, 'Bali Pocket Dictionary, and the latest one 'Balinese-English Dictionary (2007). This article tries to find out the so-called 'mission spirituality' on which he built up his missionary life and dedicated his whole life for Balinese society. As priest, teacher, and curator of culture he devoted his life based on the spirit of service like of Moses' spirituality, namely 'to take off his sandals, because he is standing on holy ground' (cf. Ex. 3:5). As a missionary who got his Indonesian citizenship in 1981, Fr. Norbert spent his talents to participate in preserving and promoting Balinese culture and language. No doubt he was an extraordinary person who deserves respect and appreciation from everybody. Most of all, he bequeathed a lot of precious things to the Church's present generation. Without hesitation the Church as an integral part of the Balinese society should carry on this responsibility for the betterment of all.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Bugis Society has a very long tradition of international trade. Because of this reason, the society has long contact with international community. Apart from trading, there were also efforts to spread certain religions. Although for centuries many Christian missionaries passed by the place, the Moslem missionaries seem to be more successful in coverting the locals. Since then, Islam becomes the main religion of the local communities and plays a major role to shape the modern Bugis society. This is the background of the research done by Christian Pelras, a French anthropologist. Based on the research done by Pelras, the author tries to picture how Islam golo has influenced the local communities, change their attitude and way of life. Six First of all, it changes the social system, the concept of belongings, religious system, law and social life. Although the "Shari'ah" (Islamic Law) is regarded as the major law, it is discovered that syncretism is still existed and plays significant roles in the life of ordinary people. The author highlihgts the fact that this situation could lead to a conflict with those who try to keep the orthodoxy of Islam teaching. The author insists that the finding fact could serve as a good lesson for Indonesian national community to maintain the plurality, as the people in Bugis have lived for centuries.

Abstract

Before the coming of Islam, Javanese society was and is still - very much coloured by Hinduism, Buddhism and local religious believes. It formed some sort of religious syncretism. Islamic teachers found that it was very difficult to convert Javanese to Islam, unless a process of inculturation would be initiated. This decision proves to be the perfect step, as the Javanese start to consider Islam as a force that respects their local customs. The interaction that follows has transformed Javanese society and vice versa. Islam trans- forms Javanese society and Javanese society transformed Islam. In this article, the author presents some historical facts as back grounds, how the Javanese cultures has developed under the influence of different religious believes: Hinduism, Buddhism, local believes and Islam. This interaction forms a new model of culture which very much influences modern Javanese society. What remain intact is the spirit of mysticism. Contrast to the missionary character to Islam, Javanese society accepts Islam but also maintain the spirit of mysticism. Using the "Serat Suluk Saloka Jiwa" as an example, the author argues that for many Javaneses, the spirit of mysticism cannot be taken away, regardless the common practice of Islam demands so. Therefore, the author suggest that there should be a movement to move from the way to A Sunderstand Islam, leaving the mystical understanding and adopting epistemological approach. The author also insists, that this process can serve as a model for the actual situation in Indonesia.

Abstract

Living in a plural society like today, the Church is challenged to update its mission in order to meet the need of the society. The plurality has served as a new context of the mission which the Church is obliged to bring about. While the idea of spreading the Good News remains intact, the methods need to be updated. It has to change along with the social development. There are various responses the Church has initiated for years, however, the actual need is very much shaped by the model of dialog. The dialog requires the change of mentality, as every person engaged in this process is considered partner, which means "we are on the same level", together moving along to find the truth, the Divine Salvation. No doubt, the mission as a process of prophetic dialog comes into the light of the new progress of modern missiology. Based on this new paradigm of the mission, every missionary is expected to develop its basic communication skill and attitude. This article discuss this focal point, how to develop such basic attitude and skill in order to execute the mission givent o the Church by Jesus Christ in a modern and plural world, which is very much characterized by the modern communication. Missionaries should have their basic communication skill. Meanwhile, they also need to Hat develop the sort of communication personality, which will help them to communicate the presence of God and His plan to save all human kind. The author proposes that the period of formation is a perfect time to develop that particular requirement. However, they also need to update themselves during the time of services in the program of on-going formation.
