Abstract

Plastic membrane sensor for polarographic oxygen measurement has been investigated. The Probe was constructed of: Pt as a working electrode; Ag-AgCl as a reference electrode and an auxiliary electrode; solution of KCl as an electrolyte solution; plastic wrap (thickness 72.7 mm) as a membrane; and polyester polymer as a body of sensor. It was found that the polarographic oxygen sensor plastic membrane probe was suited for determination of dissolved oxygen with an optimum operating characteristics at applied voltage of  –0.65 V and solution KCl 30% as an electrolyte. The probe showed that reduction current achieved steady state after 75 seconds. The standard calibration curve (concentration – current) showed that the linear relationships were achieved for dissolved oxygen in the range of 1.0 – 30.6 ppm.The analytical performance characteristics of the probe were: precision 0.87% – 30.0 %; calibration sensitivity 0.17 ppm/mA; analytical sensitivity 0.56 – 0.84 ppm/mA; and detection limit 0.8 ppm. The t- test and F-test at 95% confidence level showed that there was no significant difference between the determinations of dissolved oxygen by polarographic oxygen sensor membrane plastic and by Winkler method.

Abstract

The result of evaluation on Environmental Science for student of Biology education was still low. The average result obtained from the last 3 years were A = 7,63 %; B = 29,11%; C = 52,83 %; D = 7,11 % and E = 2,25 %. It indicated that the learning process of this subject was not effective enough. Therefore, it has to be though, how to conduct this teaching learning process of Environmental Science learning effectively.Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary science. It allows the student to think in a holistic way. Therefore in this study, problem-solving method is appropriate to apply in this learning process. In the method students were trained how to solve the environmental problem which involving some sciences. Further more along with the development of Environmental Science, it can allow the students to find out information in order to solve the environmental problems. In this learning process of Environmental Science, students have lectures, practical exercises and field works. In the fieldwork, students have to define the environmental problem and how to solve the problem. This fieldwork is supported by field observation, group discussion and paper presentation. In this method, the result is increasing. It can be shown with the student who have: A = 26,66 %; B = 53,33 %; C = 18,33 %; D = 5,0 % and E = 0 %.

Abstract

Questioning plays an important role in teaching learning process. The effect of prompting question and non-prompting question in biology teaching learning process on increasing student’s understanding and student’s retention was evaluated in this study.  The method used in the study was experimental involving students in control group who used student experiment and non-experiment worksheet without prompting question and students in experimental group who used student experiment and non-experiment worksheet with prompting question. The study was carried out in 4 concepts, i.e. the environment sustainability, water pollution, environment study, as well as sight organ in Invertebrate. To evaluate the different effect of student worksheet with prompting question and student worksheet without prompting question on increasing student’s understanding and retention posttest 1 and post-test 2 was given to the two groups in time interval of 2,3 and 4 weeks. From the result of the two tests the retention was measured. The study revealed that in the concept of Environment sustainability, environmental study and water pollution the use of student worksheet with prompting question as well as without prompting question was effectively increased student’s understanding to the concept, and the increasing of student’s understanding to the concept between control and experiment group was equally the same. Meanwhile in the concept of the organ sight in invertebrate the use of experiment student worksheet with prompting question more effectively increased student’s understanding to the concept than the use of experiment student worksheet without prompting question. Student in the experiment group performed better retention on the concept than student in control group.

Abstract

This study compared teaching electric circuit by applying Van Baak Variation Principle and by applying Kirchhoff loop theorem in developing students’ ability to solve DC circuit problems. The study was conducted in one high school in Lembang, about eight km from Bandung to the north. Most of the students come from farmer families with social-economic class status between middle and low. Two intact classes were involved in the study. One class was taught to use van Baak’s variational principle, and the other one was taught to use Kirchhoff loop theorem to solve circuit problems. The result indicates that students performed significantly better in applying van Baak variational principle than Kirchhoff loops theorem to solve complex electric circuit problems. No difference was found in student performance for simple circuits.

Abstract

Hydrophilic properties of organic polymer such as Poly (2-Vinylpyridine-Co-Styrene) have been found to have a correlation with other physical properties especially the electric resistivity. In this work, we have studied one of the physical properties of a polymer material, Poly (2-Vinylpyridine-Co-Styrene), that is the electric resistivity. It was studied on the basis of its relation with the concentration, temperature, humidity and the distance between their electrodes. The sample fabricated consists of two types of consentration: 0.03 gr/ml and 0.05 gr/ml with the distance between the two electrodes are 0.40 mm and 0.80 mm respectively. Towards these samples, we investigated the resistance coefficient for every 2% change in humidity for both drying and watering processes. From the experiment we obtain the following results: 1) There is hysteresis during the watering and drying processes indicating the continuity of resistance of this material, 2) Sample with smaller distance of electrodes performs better than that of the longer ones, 3) Sample fabricated from solution with higher concentration performs better than that of the lower ones, 4) Room temperature plays a significant role on the performance of the polymer material between the associated electrodes. These results could be used as a stepping-stone toward the more advance research leading the determination of film stability, resistancy upon temperature variation etc, so that this polymer material could be further developed into the humidity sensor device material.

Abstract

The facility layout design problem is concerned with determining the location of a number of facilities which optimises a prescribed objective such as profit, cost, or distance. This problem arises in many applications; for example, in design of buildings and in plant layout design. Most approaches for solving this problem are heuristic in nature and based on graph theoretic concepts. Graph theoretically, when the objective is to maximize profit, the facility layout design problem is to determine, in a given edge weighted graph G, a maximum weight planar sub graph. In this paper, a new heuristic based on graph theoretic concepts is presented. A comparative analysis based on 3600 random test problems demonstrates the value of this algorithm.

Abstract

This research develop model of teaching chemistry in senior high school to improve student thinking skill and science process skill. These skills are chosen based on characteristics of thermo-chemistry concept. There are three procedures in this research, i.e.: analysis of thermo-chemistry concepts, development of teaching model, and its implementation. The implementation carried out by the teacher. Subject of this research are 40 students of SMUN Lembang Bandung. The result of model implementation are three kinds of data, consist of teaching-learning activities, assessment test, and interview. Teaching learning activities data are analyzed by subject matter pedagogy method. The result of assessment test analyzed according to assessment type. The interview data support the teachable and accessible of the model. Model implementation by the teacher was not appropriate with the design in classroom activities. On the other hand, students have good concept achievement, but only for few indicator of the thinking skill and science process skill.

Abstract

In this article we will compare the classical methods of Fourier analysis with the never methods of wavelet analysis. Fourier methods are not always a good tool to recapture the signal, particularly if it is highly non-smooth because too much Fourier information is needed to reconstruct the signal locally. In this case, wavelet analysis is often very effective because it provides a simple approach for dealing with local aspects of a signal.
