Abstract

Abstract

Observation on sea cucumber diversity was carried out at coastal waters of Sudak and Nanggu Islands in the West Part of Sekotong Island, April and June  2002. Sampling was done by using a transect quadrant of 1 m x 1 m. This sampling and observation on its microhabitat were conducted by scuba diving. Analyses on the sea cucumber community structure were based on its frequency of occurance, diversity, and density. The results showed that at both locations  11 species of sea cucumber were found where  Holothuria scabra, H.atra, H nobilis, and Bohadschia marmorata  were predominant, common and more evenly distributed than the other species.

Abstract

This research is conducted to study the effect of anaerobic digestion on the reduction of BOD, COD, TSS, VFA, and Cr(VI) content and biogas production of industrial wastewater bearing chromium. Material used in this experiment are sludge of tannery waste and dairy cattle manure.  Splitplot design was used in this research, as mainplot is level of sludge i.e. 0, 10, 20 and 30%, and the subplot is days of digestion i.e. 0, 10,20, and 30 days, respectively.  The results of this research show that increasing level of chromium in the waste inhibit biological activity due to the toxicity of the chromium. Anaerobic digestion decreased the value of BOD, COD, TSS and Cr(VI) concentration, the value is 75.54%, 44.62%, 41.30% and 22.40%, respectively. Biogas production and VFA concentration decreased significanly after 20 days of digestion.  The conclusion is biometanogen can be used to reduce the level of pollution of organic matter and Cr(VI).  Anaerobic digestion can be used as alteranative of bioremediation of industrial wastewater bearing chromium.

Abstract

Phosphate removal  in domestic wastewater or  industrial wastewater is a key factor of prevent eutrophication. Mechanisms of  biological  phosphate removal occurs  under both  of anaerobic and aerobic conditions.  Phosphate up take under aerobic condition  is much determined by phosphate released under anaerobic condition. The objective of this research was  to  understand the effect of  various of  external  pH  on phosphate released  by  activated sludge  under anaerobic conditions. For that purpose, the  experiments were  conducted  in  batch system  under anaerobic condition  at  pH of  6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0   separetely. PO4, Acetate  and MLVSS  were  measured  and  used  as  parameters to  analyze  process.  The results shown  that the highest of  phosphate released  and acetate consumed occurred at pH 9.0 and the lowest it was occurred at pH 6.0. The value of   phosphate/acetate ratio was calculated to be in variation  of 0.161  to 0.256  p-mol/C-mol  in  pH  range  of 6.0  to 9.0

Abstract

Primary productivity of Jombor Swamp, Klaten has been assessed in order  to understand its water quality. The method used was using light-dark bottles incubated for 4 hours. Samples were taken between 6-10, 10-14 and 14-18 hour, under the depth  0.2, 1.5, and 3 m. The results showed  that productivity in April – 2.4 to 2.17 ppm, May –0.6 to 2 ppm, and June –2.1 to 3.4 ppm. The regression correlation of the productivity to phytoplankton`s density is y = -0.03 + 0.01 x and r = 0.76, productivity to light intensity is y = -5.04 + 0.01 x and r = 0.63, productivity to water depth is y = 0.56 + 0.12x and r = 0.31,  productivity to turbidity is y = 1,78 + 0.33x and r = 0.35, productivity to water temperature is y = 1.91 – 0.08x and r = 0.32, productivity to pH is y = 1.39 – 0.71x and r = 0.20,  and productivity to CO2 content is y = 1.77 – 0.11 and r = 0.29. Based on the overall findings, the water quality condition was classified as eutrophic.

Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of the research is to study  the influence of harvest time on seed nutrition content of two varieties of peanut. The varieties of peanust are Gajah and Local varieties. The harvest was divided into eight time differences, as follow: 26, 31, 36, 41, 46, 51, 56  and 61 days after flowering. The seed nutrition was measured as carbohydrate, protein,  lipid and water content. The data were analyzed by Anova and DMRT, and quadratic regression.  The research showed that nutrition content of seed is influenced by the time of harvest.

Abstract

The emergence of drug resistant and multidrug-resistant microbes as well as the lack of any current chemotherapy augmented the necessity to search for new and better anti-infective drug.. This study was aim to screen potential antiinfective extracts of sponges collected from Bunaken, Manado and to report on their antibacterial and antifungal properties. Testing for antiinfective agents was conducted using dilution method. Nutrient Agar was used as the testing media and nutrient broth for the inoculation of microorganisms. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi were used as the testing bacteria and Candida albicans as the testing fungi. Chloramphenicol was used as positive control for anti bacterial activity and Ketokonazol for antifungi. The two acetone extracts tested (MD-01aceton and MD-02aceton), all of them showed inhibition activities. Following partition with chloroform and methanol, all chloroform extracts inhibited the growth of both bacteria and fungi. These extracts then are considered to be potential candidates for further isolation and characterization as antiinfective agents.
