Abstract

This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. It aims to determine the translation techniques used to convey the sexist attitudes to the target language and its impact for the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data of this research are 141 utterances that are obtained from both male and female characters. Those data were collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. They were analyzed by using taxonomy, and componential analysis to see the cultural value. The result shows that there are 14 techniques which are applied in translating, those are; established equivalence, explicitation, modulation, pure borrowing, implicitation, paraphrase, generalitation, transposition, reduction, addition, discursive creation, particularization, compensation, and deletion. Furthermore, it reveals that the translation techniques determine the translation quality. Established equivalence results in the good quality of the translation. Meanwhile, the use of paraphrase produced a low quality translation in the target language. Moreover, the application of discursive creation results in non-sexist translation for two utterances.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how magic is performed in Sintren and what survival strategies are applied by its performers in the modern era. Sintren is a unique folk art of Pekalongan performed by a regional arts group called Kudo Bekso Utomo from Pringsurat village, Kajen sub-district, Pekalongan on June 23rd, 2018 during the Syawalan festivals in Linggo Asri village, Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia. To achieve this goal, the researcher uses qualitative method. Data are collected by participatory observation and interview with the Sintren dancers, the Sintren shamans, and the Sintren audiences. Furthermore, the data are analyzed by the concept of performance by Goffman together with the concept of “magic” and “trick” by O’Connor. This study finds that Sintren folk art is a unique performance which is not a trick, but full of magic. Besides, this study also reveals that Kudo Bekso Utomo survives to maintain this traditional performance by applying economic strategies, such as using simpler costumes/performance tools, always conducting performance in every event whether formally invited or not, as well as trying to present non-virgin dancer. These strategies even can be adopted or adapted by other regional arts groups to cope modernity

Abstract

Bimanese language is an Austronesian, Malayo Polinesian Language (Arafik 2005). In 1986, Jonker conducted a research on this language. His reseach focused on sintactic structure of the language. Jonker’s analisis (1896) looked similar with Owens’ analisis (2000) that stated there are two common features of the Bimanese as one of the Austronesian language, they are affixing and compounding. With the base features, Owens considered that Bimanese at least has one of the features or even both features as well. His work focused on verb expression and bound arguments in Bimanese clauses. The two problems were analyzed based on Functional Lexical Grammar theory proposed by Kroeger (2005). The theory contains three sintactic aspects, such as functional structure, constituent structure, and argument structure. Data were collected through elicitation and observation method. Elicitation was applied to obtain spoken data while observation method was used to collect written data from texts. Both methods were supported by note taking technique and recording. The collected data were analyzed by substitution and immediate constituent technique. The result shows that Bimanese verbs can express their arguments syntactically by using verb semantic meaning and preposition like labo, kai, wea, and ba-. It was also found that the obligatory arguments in a clause are generally marked with the four markers.

Abstract

Abstract            This study was intended to identify and describe the ulu-Islamic texts stored as village or family heirlooms in the Bengkulu Province. Research based on philology by utilizing the principles of text analysis. The collection of research materials was carried out through surveys in 19 villages, spread in Kaur Regency (2 villages), South Bengkulu Regency (3 villages), Seluma District (10 villages), Lebong District (1 village), Rejang Lebong District (1 village) , North Bengkulu Regency (1 village), and Bengkulu City (1 village). The survey found 74 ulu texts. Of that number, seven texts were identified as ulu-Islam texts, namely 1 manuscript belonging to the Bahud family (BAH-01), 2 manuscripts belonging to the Jalil family (JAL-01 and JAL-02), and 4 manuscripts belonging to the Asrip family (ASR-01 , ASR-02, ASR-03, and ASR-04). The manuscripts are made entirely of striped paper and books. Based on the text content, as well as the codex aspects, it can be stated that in its development, the ulu writing tradition in Bengkulu had taken part in the in the process of production and distribution of Sufism and tarekat texts, until about the end of the first half of the twentieth century. Furthermore, the absence of the phenomenon of text transmission shows that Islamic knowledge in the ulu manuscripts was taken place through the transformation of texts. The text is written based on the author;s knowledge and experience of Sufism and the practice of the tarekat. This phenomenon also shows that the spread of Islam in Bengkulu enters and integrates with local traditions and culture.

Kata kunci: kekuatan, kekuasaan, bahasa, tradisi ritual, capital linguistic/budaya AbsractThis study examines power within and behind language with reference to the Rongga people in the contemporary East Manggarai context. The focus is on socio-ethnolinguistic aspects as seen in linguistic and non-linguistic forms and cultural value systems reflecting power, the process of acquiring and preserving it in the past and present, and its prospect in the future. This is a qualitative-descriptive study, using an ethnographic approach, supported with data collected by means of interview and documentation. It provides a description and offers a fresh analysis of linguistic capital as part of other kinds of capital (cultural and economic).  The findings show that ritual language linguistically has peculiarities with a high degree of difficulty in terms of poetic and archaic expressions and patterns of rhyme and rhythm.Ethnolinguistically, the ritual language carries messages reflecting socio-cultural values and knowledge, especially in relation to traditional power.  Power within and behind ritual language is acquired and developed naturally through personal qualities (such as ability, skill, and sensitivity in mastering indigenousand linguistic knowledge), with legitimation and recognition of the authority gained by inhereted positions in the traditional social hierarchies. All these form a socio-cultural capital by which one can earn power and respect, driving influence and compliance by fellow members of the community.  While shrinking with eroding legitimacy due to modern Indonesian bureaucratic system, the acquisition of traditional power still relies on heredity, combined with ability in mastering ritual language and indigenous knowledge as part of linguistic-cultural capital for various purposes in both traditional and contemporary contexts. Keywords: power, language, ritual tradition, linguistic/cultural capital

Abstract

This paper investigates the adaptation of Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language semantically. The data were taken from Kamus Basar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) fifth edition. 1,870 words are listed in the KBBI as Arabic loan words. The definitions of these words were compared with their original Arabic definitions found in Almaany Arabic dictionary (2019) to determine the semantic adaptations. The analysis shows that most of the Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language have retained the same meanings as their originals in the Arabic language. However, there have been semantic adaptations in which eighteen words have been narrowed, nine words have been extended, and seven words have gone through the shifting process. The narrowing was due to absorbing of only one meaning of a word that had many meanings in Arabic ,  borrowing the old meanings of the words that have been extended recently due to the advent of technology, filling any existing gap or borrowing of new words along with cultural concepts. The extending was due to overgeneralizing some Arabic affixes and forms ,leaving one form of a word to represent the meanings of the others or assigning names to things by the way people perceive them by their five senses . The shifting occurred mainly because of borrowing of new words along with cultural concepts, assigning names to things by the way they are perceived by the five senses or overgeneralizing of forms that occurred in Arabic loanwords. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be useful to researchers interested in semantic adaptation of loanwords.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the elements that experience the process of cultural transformation and the meaning illustrated through the illustrations of wayang figures in the Serat Damarwulan Manuscript. In this study, descriptive qualitative methods are used, namely placing words or sentences in a logical structure to explain concepts in the relationships between existing elements. Furthermore the data in the form of a sign system will provide a more comprehensive understanding. Transformation of wayang characters is a transition or change that occurs in the surface structure of a set of symbols of figures in wayang to become figures that are likened to or equated with characters in Serat Damarwulan, while the structure in the puppet characters themselves has not changed. The results of this study indicate that the elements undergoing cultural transformation in addition to scripts and languages are also illustrations that show the character of wayang characters in the characters contained in the Serat Damarwulan Manuscript. Knight figures such as Ronggolawe and Damarwulan are portrayed as Bima and Arjuna characters. While evil figures like Menakjinggo are portrayed as giants. These figures give meaning in the Serat Damarwulan, but in their own way the characters remain or do not change. This shows that the Serat Damarwulan Manuscript describes the process of cultural transformation in the form of puppet characters from Hindu-Buddhist to Islam that goes peacefully by not changing the main character, storyline, or background.

Abstract

Migration is one of important issues in the Manggaraians' life. Their migration from Manggarai to various regions in Indonesia has made subtantial impacts on Manggaraian society. Over a long period of time, they have transformed from an agrarian society into an industrial society. This socioeconomic shift has become one of recurrent themes in Manggaraian popular songs. Two of the songs featuring this theme are “Lelak Loce Renda” written by Felix Edon and “Hemong Beo” written by Yasintus S.A. Jaar. Two questions that the present study intends to answer are, what factors encourage Manggaraian people to migrate out of their home region according to the lyrics of the abovementioned two songs? and how do they perceive migration as part of their socioculturalral realities? The answers to these questions are developed using a sociocultural perspective based on a theoretical concept posited by Everett E.Lee named pull and push factors. The study has led to the conclusion that the factors that has motivated the Manggaraians to migrate out of their home region thus far can be grouped into "push" factors and "pull" factors. The greatest push factor is found in a Manggaraian cultural value called goet-goet because of which they see migrating for better future is a respectable decision. The greatest pull factor is the expectation that the places to which they want to migrate offer more economic opportunities than those available in their hometown or home villages.
