Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the position of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) price of oil palmdetermined by regional government in a range of its price predicted by bilateral monopoly marketapproach, meaning that whether it have protected plasma farmers and reaching a price that reflectedbalance bargaining positions, or it tended to come close to a monopsonist price or to monopolist price.Three nucleus estate smallholders (NES) types was selected as samples to be examined their conditionand data (1998-2002) in this research, which were NES-Transmigration managed by private andpublic firms, and NES of small scale credit type. Single equations analyses of econometric modelwere used to estimate FFB price and volume in constructing demand and supply curves of thecommodity. The results show that the determined FFB price is proven to have protected farmers frommonopsonist price application without that intervention. However, the its level in bilateral monopolymarket perspective, in which KUD representing farmers as a monopolist, still closed to monopsonistprice. This also reflects stronger bargaining power of the nucleus firm than the plasma farmers, andthe status of FFB price as a derivation of world CPO price. More strong commitment and seriousattempt are needed from both sides to increase partnerships works in order to obtain fair FFB price inthe future.

Abstract

One problem in rice production at village level is a lack of capital and credit has become a partof farm economy. This study was conducted in 2003 and took place in Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB).The objectives of study were:(i) to identify the existing sources of agricultural credit at the villagelevel, (ii) to identify the sources of credit to which small farmers have been access to meet theirfinancial needs, and (iii) to identify the ideal scheme of credit that suitable for small farmers. Theresults shown that the oldest sources of loan at the village level were the informal institutions such asdaily Bank, money lender, rice trader, input trader, and rice miller. The formal institutions wereestablished later namely KUD in 1977, BPR in 1988, BRI Unit Desa in 1996, and Pawnshop in 2001.Small farmers and landless farmers were generally access to the informal institutions. The scheme ofinformal institutions provided a loan at high interest rate, but the other ones were very suitable forsmall farmers, such as no collateral, simple procedure, and fast to obtain. Otherwise small farmerscould not access to the formal institutions that served a loan at low interest rate, because of: (a) theydid not have any collateral required by the scheme, especially land certificate, (b) monthly repaymentof credit was not suitable for rice farm that have a seasonal cycle of production, and (c) they wereunfamiliar with complex procedure of credit. A lot of small farmer hopes a credit with collateral ofmoving goods (no land sertificate), interest rate from 18 to 24 percent per year, credit in cash, andshort term credit.

Abstract

The role of woman in rural and agricultural development is very important because more thana half of work in agriculture and rural areas is carried out by woman labors. Consequently, thewomen ought to have equity in right with men to get health services. But, there is a stronghypothesis that women have less access to health services than men because of social andcultural factors in rural areas. This study aims to examine the gender disparity anddiscrimination of health. The disparity is measured using concentration curve andconcentration index, whereas the discrimination is approached using microeconomic theory ofconsumption. The results of indicate that there is a small difference in health disparitybetween women and men; even women get more portion than men. This is because womenhave specific characteristics in terms of health problem, in which men do not have.
