Abstract

Reading skill plays an important role in English learning process, especially when student have to deal with TOEFL Exam which includes reading and writing skill. The writer observed that the process of comprehending a reading text was still a serious problem for the students. The writer applied a qualitative method in this research with descriptive approach. The subject of the study was the first semester students class E of Universitas Prima Indonesia Medan. The instrument of data collecting was multiple choice test. The mean score of the students? in comprehending narrative text was 77. It shown that their comprehension narrative text was average to good. There was 12 students (48%) was classified as Excellent, 12 students (48%) was classified as Good and there was 1 students (4%) was classified as Average whereas no student (0%) was  classified as poor to comprehending narrative text. Therefore, the writer hopes that the other English lecturer should always try to create an interesting text and media for their teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to identify learning outcomes through the media used by students, focus student knowledge to determine the contribution of media in their learning, improve student expertise / knowledge, and provide opportunities for students to become innovative teachers. This research method applies descriptive qualitative data analysis and comparative quantitative. The research data was measured through test and non-test instruments. The research sample was FKIP students majoring in Indonesian and English through 2 general subjects, namely learning media and educational statistics. The results of the study have shown that the learning outcomes of the two majors do not show a significant difference. Furthermore, 24 questionnaire items showed that social media contributed more to student learning activities than audiovisual media. On the other hand, the observations show that students are more likely to behave negatively during research activities. Students feel uncomfortable if learning activities are dominated by media. Plus the imposition of online learning which requires virtual learning activities. So this research concludes that the existence of the media will be increasingly felt if it is collaborated with other relevant learning methods.Keywords: Media, Learning, Existence, FKIP Students

Abstract

This research explores social media and audiovisuals as ways of optimizing English student learning. Given the developmentof media in information technology is so significant for education. Especially during this pandemic, the role of social mediaand audiovisuals deserves to be taken into account in student learning activities. The research focusing in identifying thelearning outcomes from Whatsapp as media that used by the students, the knowledge to determine the contribution of mediain the student learning, expand student knowledge, and provide opportunities for students to become innovative students.Descriptive qualitative method applied for the data analysis and comparative quantitative. The data was measured by usinginstrument, test and non-test. The research sample was taken from English students of English Literature study program atUniversitas HKBP Nommensen Medan and STP Bonaventura Deli Tua Medan, through 2 general subjects, namely learningmedia and educational statistics. The finding of the research have shown that the outcomes of the two classes did not showa meaningful difference. Furthermore, 24 questionnaire items showed that social media contributed more to student learningactivities than audiovisual media. Meanwhile, the research shows that students are more likely to behave negatively duringthe activities. They feel unsatisfy if the learning process are influenced totally by media. Addition the online learningimposition which needing a virtual learning process. So this research assumes that the existence of the media will beincreasingly felt if it is collaborated with other relevant learning methods.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didorong atas penerapan gaya belajar terhadap pembelajaran sastra, salah satunya adalah gaya kinestetik yang bertujuan untuk (a) menginvestigasi implementasi gaya pembelajaran kinestetik sebagai apresiasi mahasiswa dalam memahami puisi yang umumnya dipandang memiliki keragaman makna dari struktur dan unsur-unsur yang terkandung di dalamnya. Sebab mengapresiasikan puisi tidak hanya dari sekedar mengartikan kata demi kata tetapi juga mengekspresikannya dalam batin dan gerakan. Selanjutnya, (b) untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor pendukung gaya belajar kinestetik terhadap pemaknaan unsur puisi. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan studi kasus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Prima Indonesia. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara, dan catatan lapangan sebagai teknik triangulasi dalam pengolahan data. Temuannya adalah terdapat 9 dari 10 ciri umum gaya belajar kinestetik yang diterapkan mahasiswa yang didukung oleh faktor internalnya terbagi dua yaitu secara fisikologis dan psikologis sedangkan faktor eksternalnya adalah lingkungan seperti kampus, keluarga, dan juga masyarakat. Sehingga, penelitian ini dapat memberi kontribusi untuk mengidentifikasi implementasi gaya pembelajaran kinestetik sebagai apresiasi mahasiswa terhadap pemaknaan unsur-unsur puisi dan juga faktor-faktor yang mendukung pembelajaran puisi dengan gaya kinestetik. Selain itu, menumbuhkan minat dan kreativitas dalam pembelajaran mata kuliah puisi terutama merevitalisasi karya-karya sastra.

Abstract

Grammar is complexity in learning English it makes many students often commit errors in learning. Making errors in writing is one of the processes for learning English .The aim of this research was to describe the students’ errors and its causes in using auxiliary verbs in the sentences. In this research, the writer limited the discussion on the error made by the students in using auxiliary verbs. The design of this research was quantitative approach in a form of descriptive analysis (percentage) that included observation, collecting the data the researcher used test as the instrument. The writer conducted the research to 31 students in first semester of English Literature in academic 2021/2022. The data were analyzed by using error analysis method. The error types were classified based on linguistic category, especially surface strategy taxonomy. The writer classified the types of error into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Among those four types, the most frequency error was misformation  that reached 102 errors or 61.44% . the other finding was the sources of error which are divided into three categories. Those are interlingual errors, intralingual errors, and communicative strategies. Communicative strategies errors is the most common source of error, there were 45.78%

Abstract

Teachers are trained in senior high schools to increase their competence in designing and implementing CAR in the classes they teach. Seven students and eight teachers from SMAN 2 Panyabungan made up the training participants for this course. On the first day, CAR planning was stressed, and on the second day, CAR implementation was detailed. The community service was conducted by 8 lecturers of Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan, on March 5-6, 2021. The results show that teachers' understanding of the CAR cycle had increased, however they required additional training to improve their ability to collect data and do data analysis techniques.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan dalam menerapkan Reported speech. Subjek penelitian ini berjumlah 30 orang mahasiswa semester II Program Studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan. Peneliti menggunakan Metode Deskriptif Kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pemberian tes essay dan wawancara. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa kesalahan misformation merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan. Semua kesalahan dilakukan hingga 515 kesalahan dalam menerapkan pidato yang dilaporkan. Selanjutnya diikuti oleh kesalahan formasi dengan 336 (65, 24%) kesalahan, penghilangan dengan 116 (22, 53%) kesalahan, penambahan dengan 52 (10, 10%) kesalahan dan kesalahan dengan 11 (2, 13%) kesalahan. Rata-rata total untuk semua kesalahan adalah 85,83% mahasiswa yang melakukan kesalahan dalam menerapkan Reported speech. Setelah menganalisis data, penulis menemukan; Kesalahan yang sering dilakukan dalam menerapkan reported speech disebabkan karena tidak bisa menghafal aturan dalam reported speech terutama untuk urutan tenses dan pronoun dalam transformasi reported speech.

Abstract

Interaksi yang terbatas antara guru dan siswa selama Pandemi COVID-19 ini sangat mempengaruhi kemampuan siswa/i dalam memahami pelajaran yang diterima dari guru di sekolah. Oleh karena itu tim Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas HKBP Nommesen Medan membantu masyarakat dengan melaksanakan pelatihan Bahasa dan seni musik dasar dengan tujuan memberikan motivasi, semangat dan dorongan kepada siswa/i sekolah yang terdampak pandemi COVID-19. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan di kelurahan Dataran Tinggi, Binjai Timur selama 16 kali pertemuan mulai awal bulan November sampai dengan awal Desember tahun 2021 secara tatap muka dengan menggunakan prokes ketat COVID-19. Metode yang digunakan adalah tanya jawab serta diskusi terhadap seluruh peserta pelatihan. Metode ini sangat efektif dalam melihat sejauh mana kemampuan dan peningkatan siswa/i selama proses pembelajaran dari pertemuan pertama sampai dengan akhir. hasil akhir menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan kepada para siswa dalam hal pengetahuan dasar akan bahasa Inggris dan musik. Pelatihan seperti ini diharapkan kedepannya dapat terus dilakukan untuk memberikan pengetahuan tambahan diluar apa yang sudah diperoleh dari sekolah.

Abstract

Abstract This study focuses on the use of Language Style in Donald Trump and Joe Biden's victory speeches and what type of Language Style is dominant in their respective speeches. The research data was collected from the internet. This research uses a qualitative approach. In analyzing the data, this study uses Martin Jooz's (1967) Theory; Frozen Style, Formal Style, Casual Style, Consultative Style and Intimate Style. This study found 50 detected data entered into the Type of Language Style in Donald Trump's speech, namely 27 Formal Style, 13 Casual Style and 10 intimate style. And the researcher also found 50 data that entered into the type of Language Style in Joe Biden's speech, namely 36 Formal Style, 11 Casual Style, 2 Frozen Style and 1 Intimate Style. It can be concluded that Donald Trump and Joe Biden use more Formal Language Style because they speak in serious situations and in a formal place.
