This study used a quantitative approach in the form of a quasi-experimental study. The sample of this study comprises 8th-grade B and 8th-grade C students, up to 22 students per class. The data collection techniques used were assessment techniques and documentary study, as well as data collection tools in the form of post-tests and research documents. The results showed that the mean scores from the post-test for the experimental group was 73.81, and the control class was 59.54, with a difference of 14.27. As a result, there are significant differences in learning outcomes. In the normality test, the significance value of the experimental group was 168>0.05, while the significance value of the control group was 143>0.05. Therefore, the data is in a normal distribution. In the hypothesis test, the sig. value (2-tailed) is 0.000<0.05, with an effect size of 1.07>0.08, which is in the high category. The results showed that the Powtoon application is effective and efficient for eighth-grade social studies learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of smartphones as learning support during the COVID-19 pandemic on junior high school students learning outcomes in social science subjects. The research method used is a quantitative approach in an ex-post facto form. The data collection techniques used were an indirect form of communication using a closed-ended questionnaire, and a documentary study using the final even semester assessment of social science subjects for class VII and class VIII. Based on the data analysis, (1) the use of smartphones to support the learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic has a 58.9% ratio and is categorized as adequate. (2) A total of 56.3% of students have social studies learning outcomes with a predicate of C (adequate). (3) Based on a simple linear regression test, obtained a significance value of 0.919 > 0.05, showing that Ha is rejected, while H0 is accepted. In conclusion, the use of smartphones as a support for the learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic does not affect the learning outcomes of junior high school students in social science subjects.
