Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using news as authentic materials for essay writing skills. This experimental study employed the one-group pre-test and post-test design to 18  fourth-semester students who joined the Essay Writing Course in one of the universities in Indonesia. These students were selected through systematic random sampling and went through treatments for 12 meetings where they were taught in a hybrid learning setting. The first four meetings used the conventional face-to-face classroom interaction. The rest of the meetings were done online because of the outbreak of COVID 19. The instruments to collect data were tests and documentation. Before they were given to the students, the teaching materials, pre-test, and post-test designs were tested and validated. The authentic materials were news texts about global issues such as poverty, environmental protection, gender, race and ethnicities, and diseases. Two raters scored the students’ writing by using Jacobs ESL Composition Profile. The researchers used IBM SPSS 25 software to analyze the data. The results of a paired sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the students’ writing scores before and after using news as authentic materials (p = .959 α = 0.05). The paper further discusses the implications of this study for theoretical and practical use.

Abstract

Due to the pandemic breakout in 2020, all facets of human life have been subject to unexpected changes. To sustain learning activities, many educational institutions have utilized Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) as way-outs. It is true for delivering content courses at the English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang, East Java, Indonesia. One affected course is teaching English for Young Learners (EYL) for sixth-semester students. Thus, this article aims to describe the implementation of TPACK, the students' view, and the product results from the process. The design of this study is an exploratory sequential design. The participants were twenty-one Offering C students taking the EYL course. Thus, data were collected qualitatively (classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, video watching, mid and final-term assessments) and quantitatively (the Likert scale questionnaire). The findings reveal that: 1) the process of teaching EYL courses TPACK involved flipped learning in the initial meeting followed by a discussion session, and the technology used was Google meet, Google class, YouTube, WhatsApp, and technical tools like a tutorial video for media demonstration, and video making; 2) the students agree on the use of technology for their learning of EYL course and feel that they have had a lot to learn from TPACK for their course, and 3) the products generated from the teaching-learning process are video and intellectual rights certificates (HKI).

Abstract

Having a positive attitude in writing is very important since the positive attitude will make the students approach writing in a good way and will enable them to finish the writing task well. Thus, an appropriate instrument to measure the writing attitude is needed. Yet, scarce research is dedicated to investigating the validity and reliability of the writing attitude scale. This research is intended to investigate the validity and reliability of the writing attitude scale adapted from Podsen (1997) which was originally developed from the Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension Test (Daly Miler, 1975b). The design of this study was an observational, non-experimental study with a cross-sectional design, in which the researchers focused on analyzing Podsen’s (1997) Writing Attitude Scale (WAS). The population of the study was 96 students who took the Essay Writing course in the English Department, at a public university in East Java. The data were in the form of numbers on an ordinal scale. The researchers used the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) to analyze the validity and Cronbach alpha to check the inter-item correlation coefficient in SPSS 25. The result of the study shows that the CVR analysis was 1, and all items in the questionnaire were valid (p=.000≤.000) as shown in the Pearson product-moment analysis. Secondly, the internal consistency of Podsen’s (1997) Writing Attitude Scale was high (r.877). This implies that the instrument is applicable because it possesses validity and is highly reliable in measuring students’ writing attitudes.

Abstract

Song is an interesting medium for teaching English in a foreign language context. Through songs, students can learn new vocabulary, the grammar, and the idiomatic expression in an authentic way. The purpose of this paper are 1) to investigate the implementation of songs for listening and speaking activity; 2) to identify the students’ and teacher's problems and solutions in using songs for listening and speaking activities, and 3) to investigate how the students’ listening and speaking activities are assessed through the use of songs. The design of the study is a mixed method explanatory sequential design. The data was firstly collected from the questionnaire and followed with an interview. The researchers used a convenient sampling method because of its accessibility and availability. The targeted population was the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Lawang. The sample was the 6th parallel class of science major, and the 3rd Social Science major. The total respondents were 34 students.  The result shows that the listening activities of song selection and its comprehension were done at home, while the speaking activity in song interpretation was done in the classroom. The finding also reveals that many students had no problem in the listening comprehension, especially in the accent and pronunciation (41.2%). Some students had grammar, pronunciation, self-confidence, and lack of vocabulary problems in interpreting songs orally even though half of the students were in a neutral position. The solutions for their listening problems, among others, are finding difficult words in the dictionary, memorizing the words and the songs, and listening to native speakers' speech and dialogs from movies and YouTube. While for the speaking problems, the solutions are to have a lot of practice with friends and native speakers, joining speech competitions, and singing English songs. The students' performance in listening and speaking skills were assessed by using scoring rubric prepared by the teachers.
