Abstract

21st century education requires teachers to be able to understand the 21st century skills and apply them in daily classroom practice. Although necessary for teachers, research on investigating the teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of the 21st century skills for teaching English in primary schools in Bali is still limited. This study aimed to investigate primary school’s English teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of 21st-century skills. The design of this study was a sequential embedded mixed method with dominantly used qualitative design. This study used 3 English teachers and two headmasters from 2 primary schools in Tabanan regency as the subject. The data were collected by using a questionnaire and interview to gain the data of teachers’ perceived attitudes toward the implementation of the 21st century skills. From the data that have been obtained, primary English teachers gave positive attitudes toward 95,8% of the skills in the implementation of 21st century skills. The interview section showed that the teacher lacks understanding of 21st century skills because of a lack of in-depth information about 21st century skills. Moreover, the teachers have to be aware of 21st century skills in the assessment as one of the concepts that are adapted for Kurikulum 2013.

There are two variables in this research, students’ speaking anxiety as the independent variable and students’ speaking fluency as the dependent variable. The data were analyzed by using SPSS and Pearson Product Moment was used to find out the relationship between the two variables. The result showed that there was a significant and negative correlation between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking fluency. The significant value is .045<.05 and the value of correlation is -206. The negative correlation in this research indicates that there is an inverse correlation between those two variables. The students obtain low level of anxiety and achieved a high-level score in speaking fluency.

Abstract

The implementation of self-assessment might contribute to the young learners’ English proficiency and affective domain. Yet, there is still limited findings found for the effect on young learners’ writing performance. This experimental study investigated the effect of on-task and off-task self-assessment on young learners of English as a foreign language in Bali, Indonesia. 46 sixth graders participated in this study were required to do self-assessment in completing their writing prompt. A self-assessment checklist was used as the instrument. The on-task self-assessment group applies the self-assessment checklist at every stage of their writing process, namely pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  On the other hand, the off-task self-assessment group uses the self-assessment checklist before they start the writing process. Using independent samples t-test for hypothesis testing, it was found that there is no significant difference in both groups’ writing performance since the real probability that is due to sampling error is .194 which is bigger than the significance level of .05. Therefore, self-assessment could be implemented in on-task and off-task since it brings similar effect to the young learners’ writing performance.
