Abstract

Thesis is a prerequisite for graduation in all academic institutions. Higher Education institutions, such as Imam Bonjol Islamic State Institute requires its students to write a thesis in order to graduate. Students write their theses and they were examined before the board of examiners. However, students found it difficult to write ‘good’ theses that show academic honesty and high level of originality. This is a big issue in our institution, this article, therefore examines factors that reduce originality of students’ theses. Having analysed over 10 theses using content analysis method, the authors found that almost all theses contain issues that reduces the originality of the theses. Students frequently commit structural plagiarism, in which they tend to follow the structure of their colleagues’ theses, and only made minor changes. Other finding showed that in stating their research problem, students make a claim without appropriate justification. Issues of referencing and paraphrasing are two important issues that reduce qualities of students’ theses.

Abstract

The study of this article was set out to identify the use of the language of propaganda in Bush’s political speech. It was purposed to clarify the propaganda techniques applied by Bush in order to have one point of view among the audiences. The study focused on how the techniques of propaganda occurred within Bush Jr.’s speech in which he attempted to explain the different sides of who is combating terrorism and who is performing terror. The material of analysis was the speech delivered by Bush Jr. in front of the Military Officers Association of America Meeting in 2006. This article then found that the propagandist tries to control the relationship between information and audiences’ mind through the usage of language in their political speech. It was argued that propaganda can also effectively work toward almost all types of audiences, whereas the strategy of propaganda was mostly creating a fallacious reasoning connection concerning the topics being discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to explore student-teachers’ perceptions of the benefits of micro-teaching class they have attended to their teaching internship. It also seeks to identify the most and the least likely aspects of teaching which have been sufficiently covered in the micro-teaching course. The participants of this study were ten senior EFL students at a State Islamic University in Indonesia who have taken a micro-teaching class and teaching internship program. The data from interviews and students’ written narratives reveal that these students perceive the micro-teaching class to be sufficiently helpful in their teaching internship phase. These students developed their basic pedagogical skills. They become more confident; develop communication skills, and most importantly, the micro-teaching class has helped them develop questioning skills. However, students’ interviews and written narratives also indicate that management skills, such as classroom and time management, and skills to write lesson plan are the least likely aspect of teaching covered during the micro-teaching class, which then become obstacles for them during their teaching internship.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating what the English teachers at SMAN 1 Banda Aceh felt about the KTSP (School-Based Curriculum) and the 2013 Curriculum, to find out the challenges faced by these English teachers at SMAN 1 Banda Aceh in creating lesson plans based on the KTSP and the 2013 Curriculum, and to find out what might help them to deal with these challenges. The participants in this research were two English teachers at SMAN 1 Banda Aceh who have been teaching both the KTSP and the 2013 Curriculum. Based on the interview results, the researchers found that the teachers felt that they were familiar with using English lesson plans for the KTSP but they needed more time and training in order to prepare English lesson plans for the 2013 Curriculum because it was still new to them. The researcher also found that the teachers did not face challenges in creating English lesson plans for the KTSP but they faced challenges in creating English lesson plan for the 2013 Curriculum mainly in terms of developing assessment rubrics and formulating indicators for the 2013 curriculum lesson plans. Furthermore, assistance for teachers to deal with these challenges in creating such English lesson plan could come from (i) consultation with fellow teachers, (ii) attending training and (iii) discussions with fellow English teachers at MGMP (Subject Teachers Meetings). Analysis of their English lesson plans showed that their designs had incomplete rubric assessments and they did not have time limits for their teaching-learning activities.
