Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characteristics of households that affect the electric energy consumption of simple households. The second objective is to analyze the probability of each of the factors affecting the electricity energy consumption of small household. The research was conducted in Medan City in the period of March 2014 to November 2014 with samples of 143 small households, the customer of PT. PLN (Persero) Medan, which use the power of electricity for TR-1 /450VA. Data were analyzed by using the logistic regression model. The estimation results indicated that (1) the higher the willingnes to pay (WTP) of households, the higher the tendency to consume elec trical energy per month. (2) the closer the households residence to the city center, the higher the tendency to consume electrical energy than of the households residence in the suburbs, (3) increasingly unfavourable response to electrical quality, the higher the opportunity to consume a greater electric power monthly.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify : (1) profile of exchange rate and purchasing power parity of IDR against US $ based on Big Mac Index compared to the exchange rate of other countries, and (2) the position of the Big Mac Affordability of  Indonesia compared to other ASEAN countries. The results showed that based on Big Mac index during the period April 1998 up to January 2015, IDR exchange rate tends to be undervalued against the USA dollar. The cause of the currency tends to be in a position of undervalued due to the components of non-tradable have not been included in Big Mac index. The index of Big Mac Affordability indicates that there is a great disparity of income between Singapore and five other ASEAN countries. The purchasing power of the real income of the people in Singapore is nearly five times the real income of the people in Indonesia.

Abstract

North Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia with high levels of economic openness. On average, since 2000, the contribution of export value to the Regional GDP reached 40 % and import value of 28%. Using Granger causality method, the study aims to investigate causal relations between international trade and North Sumatra’s local economy especially the impact of exports and imports on Regional GDP, Regional GDP per capita, employment and poverty reduction. The empirical results of present study discovered that (i) the exports and imports respectively have positive and significant impact on regional GDP, regional GDP per capita, employment and poverty reduction, (ii) there is a bi-directional causality between imports and regional GDP, where GDP growth rate would boost imports over-proportionally, (iii) both exports and imports are dominated by intermediate goods as the raw materials for further processing industry, (iv) export structure which is dominated by the agricultural-based intermediate good is proverty-reduction through factor market in the upstream sector making the rural peoples benefited from the exports.

Abstract

Information about willingness to pay (WTP) essentially aims to protect consumers from the abuse of monopoly power owned by companies in the supply of quality products and prices. The consumer's WTP of a product can be an appropriate basis in determining the pricing policy for a product because he can reveal the true value or price of the product based on consumer perception. The price proxy with the WTP can still meet the assumption of the traditional demand model (Marshallian demand model) where the price is not set (regulated) by the government. WTP can be obtained by using a contingent valuation method.

Abstract

Objectives of the study are: (1) to estimate the influence of input value and labor expenditure on the output of micro and small industries in Indonesia, (2) to analyze the form of translog production function that is compatible with micro and small industries in Indonesia. The analytical method used is descriptive method and analysis of translog production functions with scenarios: linear translog function, complete second-order or quadratic linear translog function, and linear translog function with interaction. Results showed that (1) the function of linear translog production with interaction was more suitable used to estimate the production output of micro and small industries in Indonesia, (2) input value and labor expenditure had a positive and significant effect on output values, (3) micro-industry enterprises more emphasis on the allocation of larger workforce, while small-scale industry emphasizes greater allocation of input value, (4) the allocation of input value and labor expenditure are more efficient in micro-industries compared to small-scale industries.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between exports, foreign direct investment (FDI), financial development and economic growth in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bound test to cointegration, this study confirms the pattern of relationships between economic growth, exports, FDI and financial sector development as follows: (i) FDI does not contribute to the economy of North Sumatra because it does not affect economic growth, exports, and financial development and vice versa, (ii) the causality relationship between economic growth and exports is one way in the pattern of a growth-led export hypothesis (GLEH), and (iii) the causality relationship between financial development and economic growth follows the finance-led growth /supply-leading hypothesis. These findings suggest that the local governments should pay more attention to financial development's crucial role by facilitating the financial sector to expand the banking network and support rural credit banks.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are: (1) to investigate the development of global competitiveness index (GCI) of ASEAN-7 countries as an illustration of economic performance and potentiality, (2) to investigate which factors or pillars are drivers for the improvement of GCI ASEAN-7 countries, and (3) to analyze the effect of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on GCI of ASEAN-7 countries. The analysis method used in calculating the weight of the contribution of each pillar to changes in the competitiveness index, and determining the effect of GDP on GCI, a Semi-Logarithmic Regression analysis is used. The result shows that during the period of year 2008/2009 to the year of 2016/2017, the rank and index of GCI of each ASEAN-7 countries continue to increase. The pillars of the basic requirement subindex still dominate the largest contribution to the improvement of the competitiveness index for Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. As for Malaysia and Singapore sub-indexes of efficiency enhancers and innovation-sophistication have been able to give the largest contribution to the improvement of GCI.  The GDP of ASEAN-7 countries has a positive and significant impact on the improvement of global competitiveness index, except for Thailand. The most problematic factors in improving the competitiveness index are corruption, inadequately educated labour, access to financing, tax regulations, and inefficient government bureaucracy.
