Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out (1) the types of errors of a persuasive essay written by the fourth semester students of IKIP-PGRI Pontianak in academic year 2015/2016; (2) the causes of the students’ errors in their writing of persuasive essay. This research is descriptive and carried out in July 2015 at the fourth semester students. The sample of the research is 18 students of class B1, taken by cluster random sampling. To collect the data, the researcher uses an essay test in the form of persuasive essay written by the fourth semester students. Then, the data are analyzed by using error analysis procedure which consists of collecting the data, identifying students’ errors, describing the errors, explaining the errors, and evaluating the errors. The results of the data analysis show that the errors made by the students based on surface strategy taxonomy are classified into omission, addition, misformation, misordering, and combination error. The researcher found 79 total errors consisting of 27 errors of omission, 18 errors of addition, 23 errors of misformation, and 11 errors of combination. Omission error is the most frequent errors made by the students. It is followed by misformation error, addition error, combination error, and misordering error. The factors causing errors made by students are: (1) Interlingual transfer which is caused by the interference of their mother tongue with 28 errors; (2) Intralingual transfer which is caused by the target language itself with 51 errors. The results of this research are beneficial to the process of learning English. The errors which appear in this research can be used as an additional reference to design better teaching material and to improve a technique used in teaching writing. Therefore, the students will not make the same errors.     Keywords: error analysis, surface strategy, persuasive essay.

Abstract

AbstractThis article refers to an experimental study about the effectiveness of talking chips to teach speaking at an English Education Department of a University in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The sample of this research consists of two classes; class A was used as the experimental group treated by using Talking Chips method and class B as the control group treated by using peer tutoring method. The sampling technique used is cluster random sampling. The instruments used to collect the data are students’ documents of intelligence test and speaking test. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA 2X2) and Tukey test. Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that talking chips method is an effective method to teach speaking for the first semester students of the English Education Department of a University in Pontianak. The effectiveness of the method is influenced by the students’ level of intelligence. Based on the research findings, in general it can be concluded that Talking Chips is an effective method to teach speaking.  Keyword: Speaking Skill, Talking Chips Method, Peer Tutoring Method, Intelligence Quotient, Experimental Study.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and describe whether there is an inexpediency of the students’ perception against the feedback which can affect the teaching pedagogy in implementing it. In accord to this, this research explores more about the students’ attitudes in different levels of proficiency in writing. This research was conducted at IKIP PGRI Pontianak. A qualitative case study approach was employed and the data were taken through close questionnaire, in-depth interview, observation, and document. In analyzing the data, the interactive model of data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman was used. Based on the synergistic findings demonstrate that: (1) the different levels of proficiency in writing do not affect the attitudes of the students as the informants. Most of the informants (the students) have positive attitudes towards teachers’ corrective feedback; (2) the attitudes of the students affect their achievement in writing English. The major recommendations are that lecturers should carefully scrutinize target language features; practice a variety of suitable corrective feedback; and cater for individual students’ specific needs.  Keywords:  students’ attitudes, corrective feedback, teaching writing.

Abstract

Pelatihan strategi belajar bahasa inggris bagi peserta didik yang akan menghadapi Ujian Nasional di SMP Walisongo memiliki Beberapa tujuan yaitu; 1) siswa memiliki pengetahuan tentang cara belajar bahasa inggris yang efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan mereka menghadapi ujian nasional; 2) siswa memiliki ketertarikan mempelajari bahasa inggris secara lebih antusias. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan catatan Lapangan yang dilakukan dengan mendokumentasikan proses pembelajaran baik dari aktivitas guru maupun siswa serta lingkungan atau kondisi pembelajaran. Hasil dari analisa data menunjukkan bahwa 1) siswa mempunyai wawasan yang luas tentang cara belajar dan strategi menyelesaikan soal Ujian Nasional; 2) Terdapat perubahan sikap dari yang kurang aktif, tidak antusias dan kurang terlibat menjadi lebih aktif, antusias dan mau berinteraksi secara kolaborasi selama Pengajaran berlangsung. Key Words: Strategi Belajar, Bahasa Inggris, Ujian Nasional

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan pengembangan kosakata Bahasa Inggris dan kualitas penggunaan Word Square sebagai media dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian adalah penelitian RnD (Penelitian dan Pengembangan). Sebanyak 22 siswa kelas tujuh MTs Al- Fatwa Kubu Raya sebagai subyek penelitian ini. Penelitian pengembangan ini mengikuti tujuh langkah penelitian, meliputi : 1) penelitian dan pengumpulan data, 2) perencanaan, 3) pengembangan produk awal, 4) uji coba awal, 5) revisi desain, 6) uji coba lapangan, dan 7) revisi dan penyempurnaan produk. Hasil analisis kebutuhan mengungkapkan bahwa subjek membutuhkan media yang nyata dengan warna yang menarik. Temuan lainya menunjukkan bahwa produk media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berupa word square layak digunakan bagi siswa SMP/MTs. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Word Square dapat diaplikasikan sebagai media dalam proses pembelajaran di kelasKata kunci: word square, kosakata bahasa inggris, smp/mts, penelitian dan pengembangan

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah pendampingan siswa dengan menerapkan permainan papan scrabble dalam pembelajaran di kelas dan menghasilkan kosakata Bahasa Inggris yang baru bagi siswa. Kegiatan ini dilakukan di salah satu sekolah madrasah yang berada di Pontianak. Target Pesertanya adalah siswa kelas VIII. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode teori dan praktik. Hasil yang diperoleh melalui pelatihan ini adalah pengetahuan pembelajaran inovatif dengan permainan scrabble dan kemampuan peserta didik mengimplementasikan permainan scrabble untuk menambah kosakata Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to reveal: (1) the students‘English achievement; (2) the relationship between students‘ residenceand students‘ English achievement; and (3) the significant relationshipbetween students‘ residence and students‘ English achievement. Theresearchers used correlational research design as the design of thisresearch. The population of this research is 112 students of the tenthgrade of SMAN 1 Silat Hulu and the total number of sample are 60students who are chosen by using stratified sampling technique. Theinstruments used questionnaire and documentation. Based on the resultof research finding and discussion in this research, it can be concludedthat the average of English achievement of the students‘ who live withparents was higher than the students who live with no-relative and thereare a significant correlation between students‘ residence and students‘English achievement. Abstract

In teaching English, the use of media is essential to underpin and facilitate the process. With the recent waves of Technology, some teachers also make an exercise of a digital platform to develop new Media. It is easier to attract students to follow the lesson and also increase their pursuit of learning. This research directed to how the design of digital storytelling to teach narrative for students. The researcher used Educational Research and Development cycle from Borg and Gall (2007) which adjusted into five steps, namely (1) research and information gathering, (2) planning, (3) preliminary product developing, (4) preliminary field testing, and (5) primary product revision. The result of the research shows that digital storytelling can be utilised as a medium to teach narrative. The purpose of the medium must be communicative and attractive for the students. Equally, for the students, they are interested in using digital storytelling medium to learn about narrative. Hence, digital storytelling is designed to occupy those needs and is expected to be useful to teach narrative.

Abstract

This pre experimental study was carried out at the English Education Department of IKIP-PGRI Pontianak. The population was the third semester students and the sample consisted of one class. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling.. The technique of data collection in this research apply menstrument technique. The instruments used to collect the data was reading test. The tool of data collection apply in this research was pre-test and pos-test. The finding was the power of two strategy was effective to the student’s reading ability, it show that in the effec size the power of two strategy categorize strong effect to the student’s reading ability. Based on the result of the research, it is recommended that the teachers and the students should use the power of two strategy as one of alternative strategy in teaching reading
