Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of photography media to writing ability on hortatory exposition text at eleven grade students of SMK GKPI 1 Pematang Siantar. This research focuses on the students’ writing ability in hortatory exposition text using photography media. This research used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research design. The population of this study was the eleven grade students of SMK GKPI 1 Pematang Siantar with a total of 159 students. The sample of this study was divided into two classes, namely the experimental class (XI Kewirausahaan) consisting of 25 students who used photography media and the control class (XI TKJ) consisting of 25 students who used conventional media. Data collection instruments used writing tests for pre-test and post-test. Jacob et. al's writing assessment rubric was used in this research, which includes several aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The result of this research showed that at the 5% significance level (a=0.05), t-test was higher than t-table in which t-test= 3,514>t-table= 1,677. As a result, HO is rejected while Ha is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that photography media significantly affects the ability of students at SMK GKPI 1 Pematang Siantar in writing hortatory exposition text.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out whether crossword puzzle game is an effective media to improve students’ vocabulary mastery of descriptive text, and comparing with the students who were taught by using the conventional media. This study is a quantitative research using quasi-experimental as the method of collecting data. In this study, the data were taken from the pre-test and post-test. The Excel program was used to analyze the validity. The result shows that the mean of pre-test from the experimental group was 55,33, and the control group was 42,33. Then the mean of post-test from the experimental group was 82,5, and the score of the control group was 63,16 Based on the t-test calculation of post-test from both classes shows that the result of the t-value (3,666) was higher than the t-table (2.001). Since the t-test was higher than the t-table, it could be stated that there was a significant difference between the students’ achievement who were taught by using crossword puzzle game and those who were taught by using conventional learning media in improving vocabulary of descriptive text. The students who were taught by using crossword puzzle game have higher achievement. In other words, crossword puzzle game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on this result, it is recommended that teachers use crossword puzzle in English classes because this game is very helpful for students in improving their vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) has become one of the requirements for applying for jobs, continuing studies, and a standard for graduating students from college. The value of the TOEFL test has been recognized by 110 countries. The aim of this socialization activity is to increase the understanding of 20 students in class This socialization activity uses a lecture method in delivering material using PowerPoint, a question-and-answer session, and discussions regarding the extent to which they know about TOEFL and the obstacles they experience in understanding TOEFL. The location for this socialization activity is at Sentosa General High School, Jalan Benjamin BP. Mandoge, Huta Padang, District. Mandoge Sand City. And it will be held on November 1, 2023. In writing this article, the researchers used qualitative descriptive methods in collecting data. The result of this socialization activity is that students of class XII IPS SMAS Umum Sentosa can comprehend more about TOEFL with its benefit and some other important points to be prepared.

Abstract

Current technological developments in the world of education are very significant because the world of education must be able to adapt to technological changes in order to improve the quality of education. Global demands also require the world of education to always adapt to technological developments to improve the quality of education (Reka et al, 2022). The quality of education really depends on the quality of the teacher and his learning methods. Learning media can be interpreted as a tool in the teaching and learning process. Apart from that, learning media also includes everything that is used to stimulate thoughts, feelings, attention, and abilities or skills, so that it can encourage the learning process. One digital learning media that can improve the quality of learning is the use of Canva Magic Al. Canva Magic Al is a graphic design platform that allows users to create graphics, presentations, posters, logos, documents and other social media visual content. This platform is available on web and mobile, and integrates millions of images, fonts, templates, and illustrations. In this community service activity, the Canva Magic Al application was chosen as a tool that will be used by teachers to create attractive presentation designs for teaching materials. Canva Magic Al is an application that is popular in the world of technology to make teaching materials that are more creative and can also be used as teaching media.

Abstract

This socialization activity aims to introduce and provide knowledge and insight to students at the SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar about the TOEFL test. The socialization activity regarding the introduction of TOEFL to vocational school students, was held on January 18, 2024. Participants in this socialization activity were 11 grade vocational school students totaling 31 people. Participants gain new knowledge about the TOEFL test. There were three phases in conducting this socialization, namely preparation, implementation and evaluation. The results obtained from this socialization activity are, they know and understand what the TOEFL test is, types of questions in the TOEFL test, number of questions tested in the TOEFL test, duration and time for completing TOEFL questions, tips for studying TOEFL and also the importance of TOEFL test. This socialization can also increase student's motivation to study English more seriously. They can view the TOEFL exam as a challenge to overcome and as a first step towards success in their future academic and professional careers. From the results above it can be concluded that this activity gave a positive impact for the students in the future.

Abstract

Grammar is a language to talk about language. Just as one cannot explain how a motor engine functions (or is falling to function) without naming words for its parts and their specific actions, so it is impossible to explore the function of words and the part they play in forming meaningful language without a naming procedure. The purpose of this research is to know the students’ difficulties in using Parts of Speech of a text. This research is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. This research was conducted on the first semester student namely 95 students in 2 classess at HKBP Nommensen University Pematangsiantar. The instruments used written test. The results showed the highest one is very good category with 68 students with 71,5% and the fair category with 2 students on the 2,1%. It found no Interjection included. The text used the determiner/ article out of the box of Parts of Speech with 13 words. The dominantly applied by the students in finding the difficulties is stated to the Pronoun, Adjective, and Adverb. The last stated the word of article or determiner into the Adjective.
