Abstract

 Abstract : This study discusses students' interest in learning English subjects using the Canva application as a learning medium used by English teachers at SMA N 2 Batang Anai. This study aims to describe students' interest in learning English subjects using the Canva application as a learning medium. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this study were 70 students of class I majoring in science at SMA N 2 BATANG ANAI which were determined through purposive sampling technique. This instrument is in the form of observations by taking field notes and video recordings, questionnaires, and interviews. In this study, the researcher collected data by distributing questionnaires via google form and distributing questionnaires to 70 students, as well as recording student activities and conducting interviews with several students. Students' learning interest can be seen through 4 indicators, namely, Happy Feeling (students feel happy in learning), Attention (students' attention in learning), Interest (students' interest in learning) and Student Involment (students are actively involved in the learning process). From the data analysis, the writer can conclude that the use of Canva application as a teacher's media in learning media can increase students' interest in learning and based on the analysis, students' interest in using Canva application as an English learning medium is very high.  Keywords: Canva application, Learning media, Learning in interest

Abstract

This research is focused on developing students' speaking ability through Project Based Learning method by making vlogs about Pariaman Tourism. This is based on the findings of previous research which showed that the majority of students at the University of West Sumatra still have low English skills. The design of this research is a quasi-experimental research that wants to know the effect of Project Based Learning by making vlogs on the speaking ability of students at the University of West Sumatra. To determine the students' speaking ability, this study used a speaking test, through three pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was used to see the speaking ability before undergoing treatment and the posttest was used to see the difference in students' speaking scores after being given treatment. The research subjects were students from the Management Department at the University of West Sumatra who took English class 2. The data found showed that Project Based Learning using vlogs had a significant effect on students' speaking skills. This conclusion can be seen based on the analysis that has been carried out where t table t is observed. t observed = 3.80 and t table 2.30 with a standard significance of 0.05. So, it can be concluded that students' speaking skills can be improved by using the Project Based Learning method in making vlogs.

Abstract

English is one of the subjects that must be studied by students. In transferring competence, a special method is needed, especially for students who are not from the English Department. This research was conducted to measure the students' ability from the learning outcomes of e-module-based English courses. This research method can be categorized as quantitative research. The Mann-Whiteney test was chosen as an alternative in data processing. The total population in this study was 57 students of semester 1 of the Siyasah Syar'iyah Study Program class A and class B for one semester. The result is that the students' ability to use the English module between classes A and B is on average the same. This means that students do not find difficulties in using English e-modules.

Abstract

The students still difficult in using transition signal especially in writing descriptive paragraph. The researchers have conducted a research to analyze the students’ ability in writing a paragraph at SMP Islam Terpadu Dhu’afa Merangin. This research has focused on the students’ writing ability in using transition signal in descriptive paragraph. The type of this research is descriptive quantitative at the eighth grade of SMP Islam Terpadu Dhu’afa Merangin academic year 2021/2022. The students were consisting of 21 students. For representative sample, the researcher used total sampling. The technique in collecting data was used test. Then analyzing the data from the mean score of the students’ writing ability in using transition signal of descriptive paragraph. Based on he result of the test, it shown that the mean score of students was 70.24 (incomplete). It can be concluded that some students still confused in writing descriptive paragraph by using transition signal. Key words: Writing ability, Transition Signal, Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

100 students of eight-semester students of Accounting Managerial Program Politeknik Negeri Samarinda were the participants of this research. The aim of this research was to find out the reading comprehension problems in reading section of TOEIC Prediction test.  TOEIC Prediction Test is one of English Proficiency Tests that has to be participated by 800 last semester students.   Adapted questionnaire from Wutthisingchai (2011)  was used as an instrument in this research since this research was a descriptive qualitative. The questioner was consisted of five aspects; reading comprehension process, motivation, background knowledge, lack reading strategies, and language knowledge.   Thus, to measure the students’ perception of reading, the 4-point Likert was used in this research.The results of the research showed that most of the students of eight-semester students of Managerial Accounting Program still had reading comprehension problems.Keywords: Reading Comprehension Problems, descriptive qualitative, TOEIC

Abstract

The method used to conduct this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The sample of the research was the fourth-semester students of the English Education Department which consisted of 24 students. The aim of this research is to know their ability in using pronouns.  To collect the data, a written form of the test was used and it was divided into two categories (multiple choice and essay). The students were then asked to do the test of pronouns of a subject, object, adjective possessive, possessive and reflexive. The design of the test was based on the relevant literature review and the authors’ observation when the teaching and learning process about pronouns took place.  After the analysis of the data, the average score obtained from the student's test was 6.4 which belonged to the fair good category. The result of the test showed 23 students (96%) whose abilities were in the middle category, 1 student (4%) whose ability was in the low category, and 0 students (0%) whose ability was in the high category.   Even though the results make the authors surprised, the findings of the research can give some points of view for a lecturer to prepare the lesson materials better, apply various teaching techniques to get the student's attention and interest during the teaching-learning process and use various teaching aids to support the success of his teaching so that the students could have better understanding and competence in English.Keywords: Ability, Pronoun

Abstract

Abstract :This study aimed to see how the Zoom Application can affect students' speaking skills during online learning during the pandemic covid-19. The experimental research method was used in this study. This action research started with an observation in which the researcher The subject was a group of 30 third-semester students from the University Bina Sarana Informatika in the academic year 2020-2021. This study used some instruments as observation to collect data, which provides complete concern to the research object of the sense, which aims to explain the situation in-class activities, individual involvement in some activities, and the relationship between situation, activity, and individual. Documentation is used to obtain explicit information and to administer a test in the form of a multiple-choice question. Data was collected and analyzed in qualitative and quantitative ways to explain the results of observations and tests. In the result,  the researcher find out the average score of the students‟ speaking test was 59.1 from 30 students. Later on, the average score for speaking in Post-Test I was 79.2, and Post-Test II was 85.7. t could be concluded that using a zoom application can affect speaking ability significantly[u1]  [u1]Abstact has been revised based on the request. Abstract

The present research aimed at finding out how mind mapping using picture series improved students’ writing skills and how it can encourage students’ interest in teaching and learning process. To reach the aims of the research, the present research used a classroom action research.There were 17 participants in the research which consisted of 8 females and 9 males of Bussiness Management Study Program Students at Darwan Ali University Unit II. The present research was conducted in two cycles. Cycle I had three meetings and the second II had two meetings. In this classroom action research, the researcher conducted the plan, action, observation, and reflection.The results of the finding showed that (1) The application of mind mapping using picture series can improve students’ skill based on the calculation of the percentage, the students who achieved score 65 and more were 100 %. It was higher than 80%; (b) Mind mapping using picture series made the students interested to learn English writing. Before the actions were conducted, the students were less motivated in the teaching and learning process. After the implementation of the actions, they were more enthusiastic to get involved in the teaching and learning process. They became active and paid attention during the lesson. Besides, the students were autonomous in learning without depending on their friend’s works in doing the tasks.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and explore non-English teachers' perspectives on their students' ESP needs. This study is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The participants in this study were 16 public health lecturers at STIKes Surya Global Yogyakarta. A semi-structured questionnaire was distributed to participants to gather information related to their needs. The study analyzes the data from closed questions using simple statistics and from open questions using interpretations. The results showed that the importance of learning English is to support students’ academic fields and their communication skills. Reading is a basic skill that needs to be mastered. The students found it difficult to write English journal abstracts, practice oral communication, read, comprehend, and review academic sources in English. Teachers sometimes use English in the form of resources including books written in English and international journals and websites. Students need to learn English during their study period and after graduation. The topics needed to learn to support students’ backgrounds were health technology, health business service management, web causation of disease, health insurance, abstract, environmental health, health information system, safety, health promotion, epidemiology triangle, iceberg phenomenon of disease, research design epidemiology, epidemic, and infectious diseases, wastewater treatment, hygiene, and sanitation.Keywords: Students’ needs, ESP, public health students
