Abstract

Abstract

Being an academic community, especially in tertiary level (college and Universities) students should have higher level of thinking. This level can be reached through critical reading that offers opportunities for students actively to comprehend, make inferences, consider ideas, learn to evaluate and give arguments toward what the text says. To develop critical reading does not simply deal with the strategy of teaching reading, but also the choice of materials. Literature (literary work) as a material for reading offers the chance to build critical reading and thinking skills since the text are creative and imaginative work. It deals with phenomena occures in daily life. The text is able to invite the readers to think creatively, read between the lines, as well as develop their imagination. It activates the cognitive and affective factors required by intellectual community. Thus this paper focuses on the role of literature in teaching critical reading that should be developed from the beginning.

Abstract

A character building has become the main plan of Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High Schools. Besides, it is also the main focus in a higher education context such as a college, institute, or university. The character building, in a higher education, has been successfully done by inserting good local cultures as one of influencing factors that affect such character building. The local cultures, including moral values and wisdoms, become predictors of how good characters are formally built. This participatory-observation research studies how such local cultures are implemented in building good characters in a college. The results of this study show that there are at least five ways of inserting such local cultures into the character building, namely: 1) integrating moral values and wisdoms into a lecture preparation (e.g syllabus or teaching materials); 2) being accustomed to implementing local cultures in pre-lecturing, whilst-lecturing, and  post-lecturing activities; 3) integrating such cultures into teaching methods or techniques (e.g think pair share); 4) adjusting such cultures with classroom atmosphere; and 5) combining both culture and character concepts with scientific thoughts.   Keywords: Local cultures, Character Building, Teaching activities, Teaching methods, Scientific thoughts

Abstract

Character education which is variously known as values education, moral education, and transmission of core values is regarded as one of the important aspects in education. In Indonesia, character education has become a central theme of Indonesian education since 2010 which is included into School Based Curriculum (KTSP). Moreover, character education is mentioned in the objectives of national education and considered as the basis of the vision of national building to create a society which is characterized by good deeds, moral, ethics, culture, and good civilization. One of strategies in the character education is through the reactivation of the current curriculum which has already contained character education. English as one of compulsory subjects in the curriculum of Indonesian education can be a vehicle to explore values which are taught in character education. Thus, English language teaching (ELT) does not merely focus on how to lead the learners are competent in the language skills, but also guide them to internalize the values for character building. This paper highlights some strategies of character education in English language teaching. The discussion specifically is directed to the strategy of integration of character education into English teaching in terms of course design, instructional materials, classroom technique, and classroom management.   Keyword: character education, core values, contextual teaching and learning (CTL)

Abstract

According to a model curriculum presented by the Research Committee Meeting on JFL Teachers Training, the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2000, JFL teachers training course consists of subjects mainly to cultivate international view points as well as the Japanese language teachingpedagogy. Its target is not to train Japanese students to acquire knowledge of Japanese language as a national language but to train them to acquire knowledge of JFL to be able to teach Japanese language to foreign learners. Japanese language department and international students’ education center for JFL are separate. Among international students, there are many who aim at becoming teachers of JFL. They have to study their majoring subjects together with Japanese students from freshman if they want to enter the Japanese language department. The requirement is for them to have passed Japanese language proficiency test N1-level before they can get accepted into Japanese language department. Japanese language departments in overseas universities on the other hand have dual functions; 1) for students to become a Japanese linguist and 2) to become a Japan generalist. For this reason, lots of curriculum design challenges need to be considered. In this paper, two kinds of curriculum models within Japan will be presented for reference.Challenges to define more applicable curriculum at overseas universities will also be examined. Keywords : Japanese as-a-Foreign-Language (JFL), Japanese Language Teachers’ Training Course Curriculum, International Perspective, Social-Cultural-Regional studies

Abstract

This paper aims at describing how appraisals are used by the writer in using the language components for the purpose of developing discussion texts. The focus of the analysis is how the three appraisal sub-systems—attitude, engagement, and graduation—are taught to students. Attitude itself will be further divided into affect, judgment, and appreciation. Engagement is also classified into two, mono-gloss and hetero-gloss. Graduation is, furthermore, subcategorized into force (gradable) and focus (non-graded). Moreover, the functions performed by appraisals used are classified into three positioning, attitudinal positioning, dialogistic positioning, and intertextual positioning.

Abstract

The modern age, which sounds as if it would last forever, is fast becoming a thing of  the past. Industrialization is quickly giving way to post-industrial, factory labour to home and office work and, in the arts, the Tradition of the New is leading to the combination of many traditions. Even those who still call themselves Modern artists and architects are looking backwards and sideways to decide which styles and values they will continue  (Jenecks, 1986). Keywords: arts education, curriculum, postmodern thinking.

Abstract

Among the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) that are recognized as the keys to ‘knowing’ the language, listening is probably the least important to be taught. Actually speaking and listening are always interrelated. However listening is the most “underdeveloped” skill. Basically, they realize that listening cannot be separated from other language skills like speaking, reading and writing. Listening is important since students may receive much of their information of their school through listening to instructors and to another. Listening has been regarded as the most frequently used language skills in the classroom. Furthermore nowadays listening skill is inclusive in national examination for the level of Senior High School. In Indonesia the teachers tend to ignore to teach this skill by skipping it even though it is clearly stated in curriculum. The teachers skip teaching listening for many reasons, such as lack of teaching material, lack of school facilities, the speakers in the recorded material speak too fast, the students do not understand the vocabularies and the sentences used by the speakers. The reason of lack of material for teaching of listening nowadays can be minimized, since the teachers can use authentic materials recorded from internet, TV and radio programs. Teachers can select the materials needed for their teaching based on the topic they are going to teach and the level of their students. Therefore teachers have no reasons to ignore and skip teaching of listening, for they can have their authentic teaching materials easily.
