Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of flouting maxim that were flouted in Ocean’s 8 movie by the main character. This study was focused on analyzing the types of flouting maxim that were flouted by the main character of the movie. This study used Grice (1975) theory as the theory of the types of flouting maxim. This study used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were collected by downloading the Ocean’s 8 movie, watching the movie, and taking a note the conversation that contain flouting maxim. The finding of this study showed three types of flouting maxims were flouted by the main character in the movie. The finding showed that the maxims were flouted 10 times. The most dominant flouting maxim that uttered by the main character of the movie is flouting maxim of quality that is occurred 5 times (50%).

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the social function of code switching found in poemsbywa’s Instagram caption. The data of this study was taken from poemsbywa’s instagram account. The study was conducted by using observation method in order to obtain detail information. This study were analyzed qualitatively by using theory from Troike (1982:68). The finding show that from 7 types of social function according to the theory, there are only 3 social functions of code mixing occurs in this instagram caption, they are as ideological statement, as solidarity and as direct situation. From the whole data it can be mentioned that there were 3 data classify as solidarity function, 1 data as Ideological statement function and 1 data as Direct Quotation function. Solidarity function dominantly occurred in this study.

Abstract

This study discusses taboo words in the language used in song lyrics. In the song lyrics there are many taboo words, therefore the meaning in the word taboo is an interesting topic to be discussed in the field of linguistics, especially those related to taboo words. This study has a specific purpose that can be studied, namely to analyse the meaning of taboo words contained in taboo words. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the study of literature, especially those related to taboo words. The qualitative method used in this study was to analyse the data. The method is used to provide a clear analysis of the data according to the theory of Leech (1981). The results of this analysis, researchers find the meaning of the taboo word, namely the conceptual meaning and also the connotative meaning. The occurrence of conceptual meaning is dominantly for the use of taboo words in these song lyrics.

Abstract

This study discusses the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the Bali Water Protection advertisement. Denotation and connotation are part of the semiotic aspect in analyzing the meaning of signs. The analysis of denotation and connotation meaning in this study was based on Barthes' theory. There are two objectives of this study such as: 1To find out verbal and non-verbal signs in Bali Water Protection advertisement, and 2to analyze the signs meaning found in Bali Water Protection advertisement. In this study the data source was taken from Instagram account @Baliwaterprotection and used one advertisement of Bali Water Protection has that used to raise funds. The data were collected by observation methods and used qualitative method to analyzed the data in this study. The data were used theory of signs by Saussure(1983), theory of meaning by Barthes(1987) and used support theory to analysis the color terms by Wierzbicka (1996). This study was analyzed by presenting the verbal and non verbal signs that found in Bali Water Protection into table. The meaning of signs that has in this advertisement were presented in a descriptive way in the discussion. The finding of the analysis show in the advertisement as image and sentence. this study revealed 3 verbal signs, 5 non verbal signs, 1 denotation meaning and 6 connotation meaning from one Bali Water Protection advertisement.

Abstract

Speech acts was a set of things we do when we speak and in performance an action through an utterances. Speech act not only found in daily conversation but also in literary work such as: Movie, novel and comic. This study concern with speech acts produced by the main character in comic. The aims of this study was to finding out the kind of speech act produced by Zuko as the main character in Avatar the Last Airbender: Smoke and Shadow comic. The data in this study was taken from the utterances of the main character and used theory of Speech acts proposed by Yule (1996) to analysing the kind of speech act. In collecting the data, observation method was applied in this study. The data was analysing used Descriptive qualitative method. In presenting the conclusion, formal and informal method was used in table and description form by using sentences. The finding of this study shows that, there were 20 data and four types of speech act found in Zuko utterances. Those four type of speech acts consist of 6 (30%) data of Representatives, 5 (25%) data of Expressive, 7 (35%) data of Directive, and 2 (10%) data of Commissive. Among the data, the most dominant of speech act found in Zuko utterances was Directive in making a command, because in the story he was the lord of fire nation which have role to commanding his subordinate to do something.

Abstract

Abstract— The aims of this study are to analyze types of conflict and conflict management strategy that faced by the characters in the movie Big Hero 6. The data source of this research was the movie Big Hero 6 which was published in 2014 and directed by Don Hall and Chris William. The data was collected through documentation method, by watching the movie repeatedly, and then the data was identified and selected the data that was used in this research. The collected data was analyzed qualitatively and presented descriptively. A theory that was used in this research was proposed by Kenney (1966:19) about types of conflict and how the main character resolved the conflicts proposed by Deetz and Stevenson in Fleetwood (1987). Based on the research, it shows that all types of conflict that faced by the characters and how the main characters resolve the conflicts in Big Hero 6 Movie. There are external conflict, and conflict management strategy that was compromise and competition.

Abstract

This study concerns to find out the connotative and denotative meaning of the verbal sign in Olay advertisement. The data of this study were taken from Olay advertisement that were collected from online advertisement. The data of this study were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. This study used the theory of signs proposed by Chandler (2001: 28) to find out the verbal sign and theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1967) to find out the meaning of verbal sign in Olay advertisement. Through the analysis, it is found that verbal sign has important rules to make an attractive advertisement. The verbal sign contais connotative and denotative meaning. In this study, the researcher found connotative meaning in Olay advertisement that has hidden meaning and denotative meaning that has literal meaning to convey the messages of Olay advertisement. The result found denotative meaning more dominant than connotative meaning because the advertisements used more literal meanings rather than hidden meaning to convey the messages toward the viewers.

Abstract

This research discusses about hyperbole that is used in the song lyric of Justin Bieber's album “changes”. The objective of this study is to understand the hyperbole based on the theory by Knickerbocker and Reninger,(1963:367) and analyzed the meaning based on the theory by Leech (1974:10), that used in the song lyrics of Justin Bieber album "Changes". In collecting the data, the writer used the observation method. The data collection was conducted by some steps, such are: (1) Listening to the song lyrics from the website www.genius.com, (2) reading the song carefully, (3) Highlight the sentence that has hyperbole, and analyze the meaning of each hyperbole that is used in the song lyrics of Justin Bieber's album "Changes". In this study, the writer used the qualitative research method. There are two theories conducted in this study: Firstly, the writer identify the data that has hyperbole by using the theory by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963:367). Secondly, the writer analyzed the meaning that found in hyperbole by the theory of Leech (1974:10) that used in the song lyrics. The total of hyperbole found in Changes album by Justin Bieber was 5 data there are two meaning found, such are: connotative meaning with occurrence 2 and 33,33% of percentage, and affective meaning with occurrence 4 and 66,67% of percentage. The dominant meaning of hyperbole that used in the song lyrics of Justin Bieber album “Changes” is affective meaning with the occurrence 4 and 66,67% of percentage.

Abstract

A country can be said to be fair and prosperous is to carry out economic development. Investment in education is not only beneficial for individuals, but also for the general public and the country. It is well known that Central Java has made progress in the field of education. This can be seen from the School Participation Rate (APS) data which has increased from 2018 to 2020. This study uses a literature review technique with a descriptive qualitative approach. Literature review is a scientific survey on a particular topic. The survey is conducted by searching and analyzing literature such as scientific articles, books, theses and others. The findings of this study are that there are many studies that link education and the economy, where education affects economic growth. But on the other hand, there are several supporting factors in increasing economic growth, including capital expenditures, inflation, and PAD. Education is not only obtained formally but can also be obtained from non-formal education to improve abilities and skills for the community. This has an effect on increasing a productive workforce so that economic growth is more optimal.

Abstract

There are many signs used in advertisements in the forms of words, sentence, spoken sentences, image or colors. This signs support each other in order to deliver the meaning in an attractive way. But sometimes these signs interpreted unsuitably and arises different perspective in the meaning. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs found in Garnier Men advertisements as well as their meaning. The process of collecting data was conducted by observation method in order to obtain detail information and note taking technique. The data were analyzed descriptive qualitatively by using the theory of semiotic proposed by Saussure (1983), theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1967), and supported by theory color from Wierzbicka (1996). Through the analysis, it found that, the advertisements are composed by verbal and non-verbal signs. Both signs contain denotative and connotative meaning. The denotative meaning consisted of the name of products, ingredients, also functions of each product. Meanwhile, the connotative meaning consisted of the statement in the advertisement, the color, the background, also the models used in each advertisement that have hidden meaning. The advertiser tends to used black color as the background of the advertisements since black color is match with men imaginary that is powerful, elegance and black color show men’s masculinity.
