Abstract

This experimental research was conducted at the speaking class English Study Program Pahlawan University. This research is aimed to find out the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy toward the students’ speaking skill. The sample of this research is speaking class as the experiment group. Experimental class consists of 23 students. Total sampling is used in this research. The instruments in collecting the data are speaking test and documentation. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 24 program. Based on the result finding, the average score in experimental class was 67,5. Based on the data Analysis of Varianceit can be seen that the class factor shows that t is 5,366 with significant (2-tailed) of 0.000 which is smaller than 0.05. It can be concluded that there is the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy toward the students’ speaking skill at the speaking class English Study Program Pahlawan University.

Abstract

Think, pair, share strategy is one of speaking strategies that can be used by the teacher. this strategy is a great way to help the students to figure out how to speak english well. it gives students to opportunity to discuss their ideas. it is important because students start to construct their knowledge in discussions and also to find out what they do and do to know. this research was an experimental research. it was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Koto Kampar hulu which located on kampar regency. the population of this research is the second year students of sma negeri 1 koto kampar hulu. the sample of this research are class xi. 1 as experimental group which consits of 23 students and class xi. 2 consist of 19students as control group. this research focuses of think, pair, share strategy on students speaking ability. The instrument of this research is speaking test in from of speaking performance. the results of these tests were taken as data of this research. the data collection technique that writer used to analyzed data is t-test.

Abstract

This research was due to some problems found in the field. It has been done at SMA KEC X KOTO because most of the teachers of Senior High School still used traditional technique in evaluating students’ writing. The teacher assessed only the accuracy in the use of tense and word spelling, teacher crossed out of words that are considered wrong without giving an explanation and teacher gave assessments to students’ writing without clear criteria, so that the assessment was done subjective. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The researcher used a questionnaires and documentation collect the data. The population of this research was SMA KEC X KOTO. The samples that English teacher at SMA N 1 X KOTO, SMA AL HIRA, SMA NURUL IKHLAS consist 10 teachers by using total sampling. The data were got through questionnaires consists 29 list question items that teachers must answer based on their opinion. To analyze the data, researcher used Likert Scale and then, to find out percentage of each item of questionnaire, the researcher used the formula by Sudijono p:f /n x 100% , after that researcher interpreted of the practicality percentage table. The finding reveals that Brown’s rubric using students writing at SMA X KOTO is very practical. Mostly teacher respond to every statements such as the organization which consists of 8 indicators only answer strongly agree and agree. The interpretation table shows that the percentage of teacher’s mean score was 89%. Thus, the use Brown’s rubric as a tool in assessing students writing was very practical ( 86% - 100%). It is recomended for teachers to use Brown’s Rubric. Key word: Writing, Analytic rubric, Very Practical

Abstract

This study discussed about using Pictionary game to improve students’ vocabulary mastery to the third grade students of SDN 022 Rumbio. The data were gathered from classroom observations and interview. The analysis showed how Pictionary game gave an improvement in pronouncing, knowing and memorizing words. It provided opportunities for students to improve the vocabulary mastery as well as motivation to help the teacher managing classroom interaction. It also enabled the students to experience the vocabulary; they made noticeable progress in their vocabulary learning, gaining the confidence to pronounce word in pronouncing. In short, this study showed that Pictionary game promoted students active participation in the activities with more opportunities to improve their vocabulary through practice which in turn increased their positive attitude for language learning.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is an effect on using Vlogging as a media towards the students’ speaking skill in online class, in academic year 2019/2020. This research is quasi-experimental research that carried out at Eleventh grade students of MA Muallimin Muhammadiyah Bangkinang. It involved 52 students of two classes, XI Agama Putri as experimental class and XI Agama Putra as control class. Each class consisted of 26 students. The experimental class was taught by using Vlogging as a media while control class was taught by using Voice Recording. The data were analyzed by using T-test formula. Based on the collecting data, it was obtained that t_(count )is 6 and t_(table )is 1,67 where α is 0,05. It showed that t_(count )higher than t_(table )(6 higher than 1,67), so that〖 H〗_0 is rejected and H_a is accepted. It means there is a significant difference in the students’ speaking skill between the students who were taught by using Vlogging and those who were taught by using Voice Recording. Based on the result findings, it can be concluded that the use of Vlogging in teaching speaking skill in online class is effective.

Abstract

The destination of the research is to pattern a model of English learning assessment writing based on authentic for teacher and students of Senior High School English. Within few decades, the assessments of English learning process and learning outcomes for some aspects are isolated. The guides of English learning ways are teachers performance, students behavior toward English learning, and English learning amenities. Meanwhile in English learning outcomes the indicators are focused on writing. The result of isolating the learning process and outcomes are the students English writing based on authentic mitigated. The research design used is Research and Development (R&D). In this pattern, the development model and its setting are ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate). The products testing are carried out at Grade XI Natural Science of Senior High School in Bangkinang Town. The instruments of the research are observation, tests and questionnaires. The experts of assessments, methodology and English education test the validity, practicality and effectiveness of the model of English learning assessment writing based on authentic. The research finding indicates that the assessments of English learning process and learning outcomes affect to the students English writing based on authentic. The students English mastery is better when these two processes, learning process and learning outcomes are integrated. In conclusion, the assessment of English learning process and English learning outcomes must be comprehensively integrated. This indicates the importance of assessing English learning holistically

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the effect of using Project-based Learning (PjBL) method on students’ writing skill of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir. The design of this research was experimental research which was deal with two variables. The first variable was project based learning method as independent variable and the second variable was students’ writing skill as dependent variable. The sample of this research was 61 students of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir. Further, there were two classes of this research. There were experimental class and control class. To obtain the data, the researcher gave the students explanation text as writing test. The data was analyzed by using paired sample T-test through SPSS 22 version program. Based on result shown that towas8.682 and df was 29. It could be analyzed that to is higher than ttable, of 0,05 on the significance rtable(8.682>0.367), that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is significant effect of using PjBL method on students’ writing skill of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir.

Abstract

Learning method inovation will influence learning media used and it is hoped to improve learning qualities. This research was done to know the students activities in learning critical listening by using interactive multimedia and to measure the effetiveness of that multimedia in improving students listening skill. The data was taken through test, observation, and interview. The result of the research were (1) the students created active, creative, and effective learning process independenly in measuring and developing each step of listening learning model. (2) Interactive multimedia was effective learning media to improve students listening skill. It could be seen from improving listening skill in limited test at experiment class was 42,98%, whereas at control class the rise was only 7,36%. For extensive test, the improving of listening skill at experiment class was 33,88%, while control class was only up at 2,62%. . (3) Learning media with interactive multimedia can improve students listening skill than audio learning media because listening is not only aural aspet but also visual aspect integrated with multimedia.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe how the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. This research was conducted at MTS-TI Batu Belah. The subject of this research consists of 26 students of the second grade. The method of this research is a descriptive research. The researcher used two instruments, test and questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it showed that the average of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension of descriptive text was 49. It was categorized in Poor level. Furthermore, the students’ responses showed that 21 the students like reading. Meanwhile, 5 the students didn’t like reading english text. 21 the students want to learne about new vocabulary before used dictionary. Meanwhile, 5 the students didn’t understand about the vocabulary without used dictionary. 16 the students can finding specific information. Meanwhile, 10 the students felt difficult in understand English well. 13 the students felt easy to find the main idea and the supporting detail. Meanwhile, 13 the students feel difficult to find the main idea . 16 the students felt didn’t difficult in guessing the title of the text. Meanwhile, 10 the students felt the title was difficult to guess. 12 the students felt didn’t like to answer the questions about vocabulary. Abstract

Language is a system to communicate with people around us. One branch of language is pragmatic. Pragmatic is the study of contextual meaning. Contextual meaning is getting from language use or relation of language and context. Deixis is one of study in pragmatic learn about the relation of language and context. Deixis or deictic expression is an expression to indicate to the participant, time, place, discourse and social status. The aims of this research are to found types of deixis and the dominant type used in “What the old man does is always right” written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1930. The story was taken from the internet website of http://hca.gilead.org.il/old_man.html. The source of data is that short story and the data is the word in that story point to types of deixis. This research used Levinson theory in categorized types of deixis. Types of deixis based on Levinson theory are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. This research used descriptive qualitative method because the data analyzed in word form and explain the data descriptively. The data analyzed step are read the whole text, classified and analyzed based on the theory. The findings of this research are short story used five types of deixis and the dominant type used is person deixis (77.95%). The other types of deixis are time deixis (4.41%), place deixis (4.04%), discourse deixis (9.92%), and social deixis (3.68%). Deixis or deictic expression needed to have more understanding in read short story “What the old man does is always right”.
