Abstract

At the beginning of this study, IVB grade students in 022 primary schools in Kampar face some problems in mastering English vocabulary. Some vocabulary learning model has been applied to improve their vocabulary. However, the study failed to increase their vocabulary. These circumstances affect their learning outcomes. Because of the lack of vocabulary, most of them do not reach the predetermined KKM. Therefore, this study was conducted. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether the use of children's songs can increase the students' vocabulary and to identify the factors that influence changes in their vocabulary for the use of a children's song. This research was carried out with the design of classroom action research during two cycles. The results showed an increased level of positive vocabulary. Their ability to give meaning to a vocabulary that have been studied increased from 70 in cycle 1 to 87 in cycle 2. their ability in spelling also increased from 57 in cycle 1 to 86 in cycle 2. Then, their ability in using vocabulary appropriate to the context of the sentence also increased, from 75 in cycle 1 to 84 in cycle 2. In addition, the factors affecting changes in vocabulary they also identified, namely the use of a children's song that is interesting, learning activities for the use of the children's song gives way to the them to pay attention to spelling, meaning, and how to use koskata in the right context and learning activities also provide an opportunity for repetition of new vocabulary.

Abstract

This research investigates English teachers’ challenges and efforts in instructional practice during the pandemic outbreaks. It aims to know the English teachers’ challenges in the instructional practice during the pandemic outbreaks and to know the English teachers’ efforts during the pandemic outbreaks. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach and the data was collected through a set of questionnaire and interview. The participants are three English teachers of senior high school. The results show that there are some challenges in instructional practice; the implementation of online learning seems uneven and tends to be teachers centred, less curriculum material coverage, students were not discipline and passive in learning. It has been found also that there are some efforts to overcome the challenges during the pandemic outbreaks such as through the use of recorded videos and create good interactive lesson set to promote students’ critical thinking and encourage the students’ participation in online learning.

Abstract

Technical materials refer to the material which is designed specifically to prepare a specialized career. This research is a descriptive research. The research conducted with an attempt to find out the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical material. The subject of the research was twenty students of fourth semester STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017. The instrument used to collect the data was in the form of objective test. It was found that: (1) the students’ mastery in using synonym clue was in good category. They had problem in mastering synonym clue as they made mistake in taking the clue. (2) The students’ mastery in using antonym clue was in fair category. The problem occurred due to their vocabulary whereas the vocabulary used in technical material is high as it designed for native speaker. (3) The students’ mastery in using definition clue was in good category. The students were able to do the test because the clues were stated clearly. Besides, they also had sufficient experience and background knowledge to deduce meaning. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical marerial is needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary.

Abstract

Teaching young learners is not a straight forward job. Then, vocabulary is central of teaching and learning. Copying with the characteristic of young learner students, song is one amongst applicable ways in which to form an honest atmosphere to form teaching and learning method contemporary and attention-grabbing. Teaching alphabet of young learners through song can describe the benefits of song to support English language learning method and conjointly review some strategies to use songs in English room. This research described a case for the position of English language in country and therefore the characteristic of young learner as foreign language learners. Songs area unit learning resources that have numerous blessings, as well as linguistics resource, affective/psychological resource, and psychological feature resource. Songs can also be used as a media to show four major skills, that area unit speaking, reading and writing. Another language ability like pronunciation, vocabulary and synchronic linguistics may be learnt with the utilization of songs yet. Songs may be smart learning sources for English language category. It might be higher if English language academics in elementary colleges understand the benefits of victimization songs within the learning method to boost the standard of English language learning method.

Abstract

This experimental research was conducted at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Salo. This research is aimed to gives the effect toward the students speaking skill by using talking chips technique. The sample of this research consists of two classes; class XI IPA2 was used as the experimental group treated by using Talking Chips technique and class XI IPA1 as the control group treated by using question and answer technique. Experimental class consists of 23 students and control class consists of 24 students. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The instruments used to collect the data are speaking test and documentation. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 20 program. Based on the result finding, the average score in experimental class was 72.69 and 57.33 in control class. Based on the data Analysis of Variance it can be seen that the class factor showed that Fo is 96.67 with significant (2-tailed) of 0.000 smaller than 0.05. It can be conclude there was the effect or talking chips technique toward the students speaking skill at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Salo.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe the students’ reading comprehension of procedure text. This research was conducted at SMK YPLP PGRI Bangkinang academic year 2016 – 2017. The subjects of this research consisted of 20 students of the second grade of office administration programme. The method of this research is descriptive research. The researcher used two instruments in this research, those were test and questionnaire. The test is used to know the students’ reading comprehension of procedure text. Meanwhile, the questionnaire is used to get specific informations by the students’ response dealing with the students’ reading comprehension of procedure text. Based on the data analysis of the research showed that the average of the students’ achievement at the second grade of office administration programme of SMK YPLP PGRI Bangkinang in reading comprehension of procedure text is 91. Furthermore, the students’ reading comprehension of procedure text at the second grade of office administration programme of SMK YPLP PGRI Bangkinang showed that 19 or 94%% students could understand and comprehend the procedure text. Meanwhile, 1 or 6% students could not understand of procedure text. It is concluded that the students’ reading comprehension of procedure text is categorized into Excellent.

Abstract

This research tried to find and implement actual actions to improve the quality of reading learning process for the first year students of SMAN I Kuok. The research involved the school principal, the English teacher, the researcher, and the students of SMAN I Kuok; especially the students of class X-2 of SMAN I Kuok in the academic year of 2010/2011. They consisted of 31 students, 9 males and 22 females. The students were happy and enjoyed reading using this technique. They liked to have discussions with their friends. By having discussions, the students were able to have better understanding on reading texts than before. Their cooperation was also getting better. It implies that the English teacher can use the jigsaw technique in the teaching and learning process of reading. The students should use this technique more often in order to get better understanding to comprehend the text and better cooperation with their mates.

Abstract

This research discusses the elements of instructional design in model writing. In this model present guidelines for writing instructional design and technical elements in models writing. Instructional design models provide for a systematic approach of implementing the instructional design process for a specific educational initiative. The instrument is observation and test. The instructional models are followed by process of selected models of the Dick and Carey systems approach and description for each model will serve as the foundation and supporting points required for comparing and contrasting process of the models. The result is find some element that is Conduct instructional analysis, Analyze learners and contexts, Write performance objectives, Develop assessment instruments, Develop instructional strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the students’ skill of XI Grade IPA 2 of SMAN 1 SALO in writing narrative text. The sample of this research is the second grade students of SMAN 1 SALO. The class consists of 20 students, the researcher used total sampling technique to determine the sample research. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ writing skill of narrative text. This research was done with some steps. The steps are collecting the data, analyzing the data, making conclusions, and reporting result. The result of the research showed that the students’ writing skill of narrative text at second grade of SMAN 1 SALO in Excellent Category was 0%, in Good Category was 0%, in Fairly Good Category was 30%, in Weak Category was 55%, and in Poor Category was 15%. So, it can be concluded that the students’ writing skill in narrative text at second grade of SMAN 1 SALO was weak.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was due to some problems found in the field. It has been done at SMA KEC X KOTO because most of the teachers of Senior High School still used traditional technique in evaluating students’ writing. The teacher assessed only the accuracy in the use of tense and word spelling, teacher crossed out of words that are considered wrong without giving an explanation and teacher gave assessments to students’ writing without clear criteria, so that the assessment was done subjective. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The researcher used a questionnaires and documentation collect the data. The population of this research was SMA KEC X KOTO. The samples that English teacher at SMA N 1 X KOTO, SMA AL HIRA, SMA NURUL IKHLAS consist 10 teachers by using total sampling. The data were got through questionnaires consists 29 list question items that teachers must answer based on their opinion. To analyze the data, researcher used Likert Scale and then, to find out percentage of each item of questionnaire, the researcher used the formula by Sudijono p:f /n x 100% , after that researcher interpreted of the practicality percentage table. The finding reveals that Brown’s rubric using students writing at SMA X KOTO is very practical. Mostly teacher respond to every statements such as the organization which consists of 8 indicators only answer strongly agree and agree. The interpretation table shows that the percentage of teacher’s mean score was 89%. Thus, the use Brown’s rubric as a tool in assessing students writing was very practical (86% - 100%). It is recomended for teachers to use Brown’s Rubric . Key word: Writing, Analytic rubric, Very Practical
