Abstract

The study was aimed to investigate the secondary morphological and histological structures of gonad of coconut crab (Birgus latro). Morphologically, male and female gonads were described based on size, surface condition, colour and ocupied stage in abdomen. Histologically, male gonad was described based on appearance of spermatocyte, spematid and spermatophore using PAS-Hematoksilin method, while female gonad was described on oocyte development, nucleus condition, and deposit of oocyte using Hematoksilin-Eosin methods. Morphologically, testes are smooths, white-brownish, and occupied about 9-40% abdoment, while ovarium surface are smooth-granule, whitish, grey-dark, red, and occupied about 25-80% abdoment. Histologically, the testes showed spermatocyte, spermatid, and spermatozoa in spermatophore, while the ovarium showed oocyte at premature-mature conditions.Key words: Morphological and histological structures, gonad, coconut crab (Birgus latro).

Abstract

One of the critical issues faced by a Koi’s breeder is sexing at the early age, since it will result in financial benefit for the breeder. In this paper we describe the results of early sexing technique that is developed for the Koi using combination of descriptor method and application of artificial neural network (ANN), where we used back-propagation algorithm in the computation. Input data for ANN are obtained from both morphometric and energetic descriptors of Koi’s images. The morphometric descriptor shows that early sexing is possible and can be accomplished within 2 (two) months, which is much faster than conventional technique by means of histology. The accuracy of ANN computation for sexing using both descriptors as input is about 70%.Keywords: sexing, descriptors, artificial neural network, Koi

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

A triplicate experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary chromium on the growth performance of baung fish (Hemibagrus nemurus Blkr). This experiment used four diets contain different level of chromium yeast (0.0, 1.47, 3.20, and 4.59 mg/kg). Twenty fish with the initial body weight 7.0 ± 0.2 g were placed in each aquarium (50x40x35 cm). Fish were fed on the experimental diets three times daily, at satiation for 60 days. The results showed that chromium diets produced body protein level, ratio RNA/DNA and protein retention higher than that of non chromim diet. However, diet contained chromium yeast 3.20 mg/kg produced the highest protein deposition. Finally, it also produced the highest daily growth rate and feed efficiency. The liver and carcass glycogen level increased as the chromium level of diets was elevated, on the other side, body lipid level decreased as the chromium level of diets was elevated. Keywords: chromium, baung, growth.

Abstract

The digestive organs of four species deep-sea snappers (subfamily Etelinae, Family Lutjanidae) were investigated and compared including mouth shape as well its mouth gape, teeth structures, stomach morphology, pyloric caeca and intestine in order to investigate the existence of variability in food habits of these carnivorous fishes. The results showed that the mouth gape is an adaptation form of feeding habits, feeding strategy, as well as food size. In addition, the presence of jaw protrusion = may favour to fish feeding success. Based on regression analysis, the mouth gape is fairly correlated with the length of intestine (A. rutilans and P. multidens) and to a lesser extent with the other two species (A. virescens and P. filamentosus), indicating a weaker relationship between mouth gape versus total length than that of intestine versus total length. A generalisation of smaller proportion of the length of intestine to body length in carnivorous fishes is being questioned in this study, as an opposite result was found in P. filamentosus with a support evidence from herbivorous freshwater spotted barb (Puntius binotatus). It is suggested that the larger number in pyloric caeca of P. filamentosus is a compensatory mechanism in food digestion.Key words: variability in food habit, variability in digestive organs, feeding strategy and adaptation, deepsea snappers

Abstract

Fish stock in marine waters is always dynamic due to fluctuation in the annual total catch. Consequently, the estimate number of fish stock changes yearly, without exception in the southern coastal water of West Java. Fish stock condition in this region has not been reevaluated since 1999, the time before the separation of the province into West Java and Banten. This current study was intended to reassess the condition of fish stock utilization and estimate fish stock growth parameters in the southern coastal water of West Java in 2006. Data of fish production, effort, fish price, and effort cost for 14 years (1993-2006) are taken from the Office of Fisheries Agency of West Java Province. Effort data are standardized using relative fishing power method. Analysis of fish stock condition is carried out using Gordon-Schaefer bioeconomic model. Fish stock growth parameters are estimated using CYP, Uhler, and Hilborn and Walters methods. The results showed that utilization of marine fish resource in the southern coastal water of West Java is still in the condition of underfished and under effort. Estimates of fish stock growth parameters in this area are r = 3.8882, K = 22 080.355 ton, and q = 14.1775 × 10-7.Key Words: Fish stock assessment, southern coastal water, West Java, Gordon-Schaefer model.

Abstract

The research about utilization of MS-222 and salt solution was conducted on the transportation of jelawat fingerling. The objective of this research was to find the optimum concentration of MS-222 (tricaine methanesulfonate) in water with similar salinity as transport medium of jelawat fingerling. These triplicate experiments consisted of 8 levels of MS-222 combined with NaCl; and the ratio of MS-222 (mg L-1) and salt (gL-1). Treatment A only salt 3 g L-1, without MS-222 in order to evaluate the important of salt in the transportation. Treatment B (MS-222 0.0; salt 3.0), C (10.0;3.0), D (20.0;3.0), E (30.0;3.0), F (40.0;3.0), G (50.0;3.0) and H (60.0;3.0). The size of jelawat were 10-12 cm in total length. the experimental unit, was a plastic bag filled with 1 L water, 3 L of oxygen and 25 fish. Those plastic bags had been placed in styrofoam box and transported by car for 18 hours. The results showed that the induction time, sedative duration and survival life of fish were significant (p < 0.05) among all those the treatments. The level of MS-222 40 mg L-1 and 50 mg L-1 were not different significantly (p > 0.05) difference on induction time, sedative duration and survival life. The best concentration of MS-222 was 40.02 mg L-1 for survival rate of jelawat fingerling transportation. Keywords: Tricaine Methanesulfonate, salt, transportation, and Leptobarbus hoevenii Blkr.

Abstract

The Challenge for small islands planners and managers in Indonesia right now is to develop resources and environment service of small islands for the maximum benefit and, at the same time, to maintain the sustainable capacity of ecosystems (meaning does not exceed the carrying capacity of the ecosystems). This paper applied carrying capacity concept for sustainable development of small islands. To determine carrying capacity of utility space of small islands through two aspects: (1) freshwater, and (2) spaces. Analysis result of carrying capacity for directing utility land area (settlements and agricultures), the freshwater aspects would be fullness, if annual absorption to rainy stayed at 50%. The space area of aquatic which could be utilized for marine culture, shore and marine ecotourism there were around 70%. It was 30% recommended for marine protected zone. Keywords: sustainable development, small islands, carrying capacity .
