Abstract

Commisive is kind of speech acts that used by the speakers to commit themselves to some future course action. They express the speaker’s attention to do something on some future action. This study concerned on finding out types of commissive speech act used by characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, as well as analyzing the meaning of the utterances. This study applied the theory of pragmatics from Yule (1996) to find out the types of commissive speech act, theory of meaning from Thomas (1995) to analyse the implied meaning and supported by the theory of context of situation from Halliday and Hasan (1989). The data were collected by using observation method and analysed by descriptive qualitative method. The finding is presented in formal and informal way. Our finding shows that there are four types of commisive speech acts which predominantly used by the characters in the movie John Wick Chapter 2, they are: refusal (12%), warning (48%), promise (12%) and threat (28%). Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to know the existence of BSPS as a government program through PUPR and the review focuses on Muncan Village, Karangasem Regency, as one of the beneficiary areas. The program follows the decisions, directions, rules, and procedures established by the provincial government of Bali. Research methods: The data are analyzed to separate criteria related to problems and solutions, and also solutions based on procedures and purposely determine informants based on specific criteria and considerations. Findings: Constraints were complicated by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has an impact on various lines globally. Particular action needs to be taken primarily by TFL with the community. In addition to having to carry out procedures and rules in the distribution of aid, preventive measures addressing various field conditions also need to be considered. The analysis is divided into two categories: conditional on BSPS verification activities to keep going and initiatives to address the Covid-19 pandemic crisis in the field. Implications: The various obstacles faced are expected to become a consideration or study for the next period, especially with things that are unpredictable and are force majeure along with the team that is tasked directly in the field.

Abstract

This study concerned on finding out the messages carried by both verbal and nonverbal signs in Kuta five star hotel advertisements. The data were taken from internet. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative method using theory of semiotics from Saussure (cited in Chandler 2001), the theory of meaning by from Barthes (1967), and theory color term from Cerrato (2012). The message is presented in formal and informal way. Our findings show first, the verbal signs that appear have connotative and denotative meanings can provide meaningful messages to the reader. Second, the visual signs that appear show several images and colors that have various meanings according to the context behind the advertisement.

Abstract

People are coping with various problems in life that may influence their mental health if they fail to manage them. One kind of mental illness is depression that is frequently marked by the feeling of helplessness, disliking oneself, and shame for being weak. Being aware of depression signs by learning from any kind of media including movie will help people to control their mental and emotional condition. This study attempts to find out the effects of depression on the main character in Her, a two-hour-five-minute movie that is said to be a romance narrative about the relationship between Theodore, a sensitive, depressed and lonely guy with his computer operating system (OS) called Samantha. This study applied a qualitative descriptive method that was realized through observation and content analysis technique. To reveal the psychological exploration focusing on Theodore’s depression, the obtained data were classified based on the relevant categories describing effects of depression. The results show that there are five effects of depression taking place on the life of the main character, Theodore, namely (1) self-blame (2) low self-esteem, (3) loss of appetite, (4) trouble concentrating and (5) trouble sleeping. These five effects are triggered by Theodore’s helplessness due to his divorce that he makes him difficult to move on and the surrounding environment that frequently mocks him.
