Abstract

Along with the pace of globalization, and the severity of educational competitions, not a few actors of Islamic higher education tried to integrate two 'educational entities' (university and pesantren), in an integrated education curriculum system. Some were successful, but not a few was failed. This qualitative research article is based on interactive model data analysis technique that aims to 'initiate' the efforts of integrated curriculum development model of excellent higher pesantren at UII Yogyakarta, considering its good institutional achievement, so it should be the pilot project of the integration effort. This research concluded that the indigenous values in integrated curriculum development based on its excellent pesantren are to be oriented at the value of establishment of a 'progressive-inclusive-integrative' scholars candidate. The challenges of its integrated curriculum development include the alignment of synergical idea of university values and modern pesantren; institutionalization of university and pesantren policies; and integrating the curriculum products of university-based pesantren and community service. While, the strategies of its integrated curriculum development are implementing a top down and bottom up approach that involve all its stakehoders through a forum for feasibility of pesantren curriculum development that supported by phases that are determination of the pesantren curriculum enforcement area, development procedures; curriculum implementation; and evaluation results. However, it still needs strengthening ‘the outsider’s perspective’, especially from the users of its pesantren curriculum products in order to be able more adaptive to global needs as the idea of Beauchamp

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the challenges of pesantren during global currents; to find out the aspects that strengthen the continuity of the pesantren; and to find strategies for dealing with global challenges. The approach used in this research is qualitative with library research. The data were collected through references related to central themes. To analyze the data, several techniques were conducted such as data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results showed that 1). The challenges of Islamic boarding schools during global currents can be in the form of thought, culture, science, and technology, as well as competition in various fields; 2). Aspects that strengthen the continuity of the pesantren to traditions and culture which are steadfastly and istiqamah fought for and preserved; 3). The pesantren's strategy in facing global challenges is to sort out every global progress by taking what is useful and removing what is harmful. Education in this Muslim-majority country has large and important role in the whole Indonesia human development. The existence of education is the pillar of science and knowledge building that is able to lead society towards development and progress. The development and progress are born and appear in the middle of people's life becomes a necessity. Occurrences that simply cannot be expected when people underestimate and ignore education. The presence of pesantren as a representation of Islamic educational institutions cannot be circumvented. Pesantren, in the Indonesian dictionary, is an indigenous Islamic institution. But over time, tough challenges began to appear.

Abstract

The Kurikulum 2013 –Indonesia's novel Curriculum invented in 2013– is implemented through activity-based learning using a scientific approach. Curriculum changes do not only occur in the dimensions of the plan/document, but in its implementation in the quality of the process which has an impact on learning outcomes. This research aims to determine the implementation of the Kurikulum 2013 scientific approach and its impact on the quality of the learning processes and outcomes at MAN in Lampung Province. The research uses a mixed methods with sequential mixed methods design. The respondents consisted of 26 teachers and 126 students. Data were collected by conducting interview, observation, documentation, and questionnaire. The validity was tested by Pearson’s validity and Cronbach Alpha reliability. The results showed that teachers can apply a scientific approach to the implementation of the Kurikulum 2013 well. It can be seen from the teacher’s ability to prepare lesson plans, though there are some teachers (working period of 21 to 30 years) who are constrained during the learning process, such as observing the learning and not being able in presenting the media. The scientific approach has a very good impact on the quality of the learning process and outcomes. It can be seen by the increase in student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the strategy, creativity and social involvement of Raden Adjeng Kartini (1879-1904) in developing education in Indonesia, especially women’s education, and its relevance for Islamic education in present-day Indonesia. This study uses qualitative content analysis and hermeneutics to analyse and contextualise Kartini’s ideas in reconstructing Islamic education, most specifically in the context of Indonesia. This paper argues that even though Kartini lived in the late 19th century, her thoughts still found its relevance in the present context. Her thoughts may serve as inspiration and foundation for reconstructing Islamic education in Indonesia. This reconstruction touch upon such issues as gender-conscious education, non-violent education, and character education.

Abstract

This paper aims to portray the role of Higher Education in mainstreaming Indonesian nationalism insight amid the dynamic issue of nationalism in society. It specifically focuses on the extent to which the insight is implemented in the Three Pillars of Higher Education or Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi at IAIN Pekalongan. The study used a descriptive-qualitative approach with data sourced from Renstra, academic instructional guideline, research and community service in 2017 and 2018, period that marks early years of IAIN Pekalongan after its conversion from STAIN. From data analysis, this reflective study argues that, first; the implementation of Indonesian nationalism insight in teaching has been effective only at the policy level. Second, its implementation in research is still limited, i.e. 11 of 134 studies (8.2%). Third, its implementation in community service has not been accommodated explicitly because the existing programs revolve around community empowerment in specific social and religious areas. The study also presents challenges analysis in the end of discussion.

This research was categorized as field research and literature study. Data collection methods used were observation, interviews and document analysis. Data analysis was through two models, namely content analysis and Miles and Huberman's model which involved analysis steps, namely: data collection, data reduction, data display, and verification. The authors’ findings on this study are that the content of the Quran Hadith with a multicultural perspective in Madrasah Aliyah is carried out by expanding the reading, the meaning of the implementation of tolerance, social ethics, justice, deliberation / democracy concepts which are constructed from the Islamic universal values and moderation (washathiyah) so they can foster a tolerant and empathy (alturism) attitutes to human beings as a manifestation of an obedient servant.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is the madrasa in Indonesia and its development which is examined from the perspective of Michel Foucault regarding their authority, knowledge and discourse. The madrasa’s performance, which is still relatively low and unable to compete with public schools or pesantrens (Islamic Boarding Schools), will be examined from this perspective. This paper departs from the study of literature with a historical-sociological approach. The sources of the data come from the literature related to the history and development of madrasas. From Foucoult's perspective, the performance of the madrasa--which in its development shows a decline trend and is of relatively low quality and less competitive compared with general schools or pesantrens-- is closely related to power, knowledge and discourse factors. My argument is supported by the evidence that there is no an established “blueprint” for the supervision and development of madrasas in Indonesia, in contrast to schools or pesantrens. Likewise, the problem of interplay of madrasa policies in the integration of the national education system has put the madrasa in the midst of domination of schools and pesantrens, especially in the midst of society since the appreciation and level of community participation in the madrasa are not very encouraging. In addition, there is an opinion among the public which perceives the madrasa as the second educational institution after schools or pesantrens. This opinion is, of course, supported by empirical data, such as research from Nur Hamzah (2017) and Sukino (2017) which examined the madrasas in West Kalimantan Province, and revealed the poor quality of some madrasas in this area, which in my opinion is the "top of the iceberg" of the madrasa, especially in the outermost, interior and underdeveloped areas of Indonesia.

Abstract

Qur’an is the main source of Islamic Education or Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) teaching materials. In the Qur'an, there are various stories repetitions that are presented well. Repeating the story allegedly has a close relationship with Islamic education learning strategy. The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding that the repetition of stories in the Qur'an can be used as a learning strategy for Islamic religious material. This library research used qualitative data. The data is in the form of primary sources, such as ‘Psikologi Kisah dalam Al-Qur’an’ book The data that had been tested were then analyzed using the content analysis approach of repetition story as PAI learning strategy. The results showed that the concept of stories repetition in the Qur’an is very relevant to be used as PAI learning strategy. The results of the study showed that the story repetition concept in the Qur'an is very relevant to the Islamic education learning strategy. These stories become part of an effective and efficient learning strategy in equipping students with various Islamic studies. The repetition taught by Allah in the Qur'an and prophet in Hadith is one of learning principles. The principle of repetition in learning should be implemented in the Islamic education. So, all methods applied in learning must use repetition.

Abstract

Every curriculum change in Indonesia impacts other components in the national education system, including the learning material. However, main material changes have not been discussed completely. This article presents the analysis result about the impact of 2013 curriculum for Primary School (PS) and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) in Indonesia on the subject materials. This study used a literature review which examined various applicable 2013 policy documents and textbooks as a representation of the core materials. The findings of this study indicate that the change from the 2006 curriculum to the 2013 curriculum in PS/MI level has an impact on changes in teaching material. The structure and method changes are more structured, hierarchical and not overlap among levels, due to core competencies. The presentation is thematic and from concrete to abstract. Material content also changes. Teaching materials in the 2013 curriculum in PS/MI level are contextual, integrative and focused on character and soft skills. Teaching materials in the 2013 Curriculum also covers critical and creative thinking, communicative, and collaborative learning.

Abstract

Teachers are obliged to possess authority to increase pedagogical interaction effectivity. However, there has been a shift in the meaning of authority so that an in-depth study is carried out on the dimensions of teacher authority, factors that influence the teacher authority, and the dynamics of teacher authority in Madrasah based of Islamic boarding school (pesantren). This research is a qualitative research by using interview, observation and documentation methods to collect the data. The data analysis includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results show: 1) Authority is defined as strength to be admired accompanied by respect so as to bring obedience. The dimensions of teacher authority include spiritual, cognitive, affective, skills, social and physical: 2) There are at least 3 (three) factors that can increase the teacher authority, namely assertiveness, responsibility and patience; 3) The teachers authority from inside the pesantren (ndalem) is in the form of traditional authority, while teachers from outside the pesantren must strive to gain authority in the form of charismatic authority or even legal rational authority.
