Abstract

Background: The issue of climate change and the environment has not become the primary focus of the media in Indonesia, but it is frequently featured in the news. This occurs because the media fulfils its function as a provider of information. Purpose: This study seeks to explain how cyber media constructs climate change and environmental issues in the news. Methods: Research with a qualitative approach and qualitative descriptive methods, with critical discourse analysis as the data analysis technique. The websites Kompas.com, Okezone.com, and Suara.com are the subject of study. Results: According to the study, climate is the word that appears the most frequently in the text of the three media. Change is the term that appears most frequently on Kompas.com and Suara.com. Indonesia is the most popular search term on Okezone.com. At the level of production, cyber media lacks an agenda-setting team, a dedicated channel, or a specialized team devoted to the environment and climate change. At the social level, they only generate news related to the environment and climate change if it has gone viral and is trending on social media. Conclusion: The research concludes that there are both distinctions and similarities among the three cyber media in terms of the words that appear most frequently in news articles about environmental issues and climate change. They lack agenda-setting, a dedicated channel, and a specialized team. They are oblivious to environmental issues and climate change. Implications: The research has implications for agenda setting from theoretical implications. The media does not set an agenda and only follows the viral, trending, and important public issues. The implication is that cyber media gives viral issues a news value.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia is a country that is highly susceptible to volcanic disasters. One potential measure the community can take is to utilize social media platforms to participate in disaster mitigation efforts. The hashtag #Semeru exemplifies the utilization of social media in disseminating information regarding volcanic disasters. It became a trending topic on Twitter regarding the information on the eruption of Mount Semeru at the end of 2021. Purpose: The primary objective of this research is to examine the operational mechanisms of the Mount Semeru eruption early warning system on Twitter. Furthermore, the objective is to determine the key actors responsible for disseminating early warning information on Twitter. Methods: This study employed the Social Network Analysis (SNA) method. Results: The findings show that the network distribution pattern of the Semeru eruption early warning system has a radial communication network pattern with indicators of low network density levels. The actors @fiersabesari, @bnonews, @asumsico, @disclose.tv, @jawafess, and @insiderpaper have a proximity centrality value of 0 due to their lack of acquaintance. On the other hand, two actors possess a closeness centrality value: @melodiysore with a value of 0.8 and @daryonoBMKG with a value of 0.2. This study highlighted that the actors involved in disaster management and mitigation had a level of popularity that ranked outside the top 10. Conclusions: The information network system for the early warning of the Mount Semeru eruption on Twitter forms a network distribution with a radial communication pattern that is concentrated at one point and acts as a key actor. Eight key actors play a role in disseminating early warning messages, specifically @fiersabesari, @daryonoBMKG, @bnonews, @asumsico, @disclose.tv, @theinsiderpaper, @melodiysore, and @jawafess (community). Implications: This study demonstrates the benefits of using Twitter as a timely indicator for disasters, notably the eruption of Mount Semeru. It can effectively engage the community and government in disseminating early-warning information about volcanic eruptions.

Abstract

Background: The development process of digital literacy is gradual and significantly influenced by parenting style. How parents raise their children significantly impacts how well-trained adolescents are in media-related behaviour. Purpose: The study aims to examine the relationship between the digital literacy levels of adolescent - students at the Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Islam Bandung - and the parenting styles they experience within their families. Methods: This research employed a quantitative approach within the positivistic paradigm. It involved a sample of 120 students. Results: This study revealed that adolescents from families with authoritative parenting styles exhibited higher levels of digital literacy than those from authoritarian, permissive and neglectful families. Meanwhile, adolescents from neglectful family backgrounds demonstrated the lowest degree of digital literacy. These findings provide a foundation for developing adolescent digital literacy and, consequently, promoting cyber wellness by achieving a balance between online and offline life. Conclusion: This research indicated no significant relationship between parenting style and students’ digital literacy at the Faculty of Communication, Universitas Islam Bandung. Implications: Nevertheless, it is worth noting that students raised within a family with an authoritative parenting style tend to exhibit higher digital literacy abilities, although the difference is not statistically significant. This study also introduces a comparative theory, highlighting the contrast between students, who are digital natives, and their parents, who can be considered digital immigrants.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted people to seek and get information on COVID-19 through the mass media or social media. It is expected to impact their beliefs, attitudes, and actions toward health-protective behavior. Purpose: This study aims to see how health-protective behavior amid a pandemic is predicted by exposure to COVID-19 information in the mass media and on social media. Methods: The current study advances the theory of planned behavior by surveying 413 persons cross-sectionally on Java Island, Indonesia. PLS-SEM was employed to assess measurement and structural models in order to answer the hypotheses. Results: The findings reveal that using mass media and social media to receive knowledge about COVID-19 strongly predicts intentions and behavior to apply preventive behavior, which is mediated by perceived behavioral control (PBC) and attitude. Conclusion: This research concludes that social media and mass media significantly positively influence three important aspects of forming behavioral intentions, and it also found that attitude, subjective norms, and PBC are important aspects of existing behavioral intention. Implications: This research also looks at the theoretical and practical ramifications. Theoretically, media use is related to the application of the TPB model. Practically, the government needs to optimize the mass media and social media use to reach the public with lots of valid, easy-to-understand COVID-19 information and generate positive optimism from the public.

Abstract

Background: Instagram allegedly hid the number of likes due to its alleged negative effect. However, it now allows users to choose their visibility settings. Users can either hide or show the number of likes, which has become a conversation topic among users. Some users responded positively, while others had less favorable responses. Moreover, because they consider the “like” feature one of Instagram’s key differentiators, some users hide the number of likes while others continue to display them. Purpose: This study explores users’ choices in configuring Instagram-like settings and their underlying motivations. Additionally, the study also examines the role of Instagram-Likes in boosting self-confidence. Method: This research used a quantitative descriptive method involving 703 students from the Communication Science Study Program at Halu Oleo University, Indonesia. The sample consisted of 70 individuals aged 18 to 24. The data analysis used descriptive statistics to provide a general overview of each variable, displayed with a frequency chart. Researchers also used qualitative data for comparative purposes to enhance research results. Result: Most respondents chose to indicate the number of likes, categorizing their motives into neutral, positive, and negative categories. Instagram likes are a relatively insignificant aspect of life. On the positive side, they can offer benefits to users, such as validation and recognition. Conversely, flaunting one’s likes can be viewed as seeking validation or showing off. It is worth noting that some individuals who conceal the visibility of likes do so to safeguard their self-esteem and mental well-being. Another finding from this study is that Instagram-Like can strengthen their self-confidence. Conclusion: Instagram users have complete control over the Instagram-like options that allow them to hide their like count or not. Instagram-Like can increase self-confidence. The consideration of ‘likes’ as a manifestation of praise, appreciation, acceptance, admiration, and love from others is a prevailing sentiment among individuals. Implication: The researchers expect this research will provide new insights into using social media wisely for positive mental health.
