Abstract

The problems of education in the 21st century face the challenge of how to give birth to a generation that has the ability to think critically and skills for solving life's problems. These problems can be answered through pedagogical innovations. This study aims to analyze the form of educational innovation carried out by Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia and Malaysia in the 21st century. This research method uses a qualitative approach with a systematic literature review (SLR) type. The tools used to codify the literature are publish and perish, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The codification results found 64 articles on Islamic Boarding School Innovation in Malaysia and 207 in Indonesia. Codified articles based on year boundaries between 2013 and 2023 The results of the study found that the educational innovations of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia and Malaysia from 2013–2023 had differences in aspects of technology use, community involvement, collaboration with other educational institutions, a combination of religious and general education, and aspects of project-based education. The similarities between the two are increasing the faith of Muslims through religious education and creating generations of noble characters. To face the challenges of the 21st century, it requires the role of a transformational and distributive leader who can foster unity, foster partnerships, foster cooperation, promote democracy, foster tolerance, and engage in leadership practices.
