Abstract

The English final examination is no longer a high-stake test since National Examination (NE) was abolished in 2021 and replaced with the Ujian Satuan Pendidikan (USP). Therefore, this study explores the washback effects experienced by Indonesian EFL teachers and students and discovers teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the implementation of USP. Six participants, three Indonesian English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, and three Public Vocational High School students in Singosari were interviewed to meet the research goals. The findings indicated that focusing on teaching to the test, cheating, and feelings and attitudes were the washback effects of the English final examination in implementing USP. Then, the English final examination still harms the teaching and learning process and teachers’ and students’ feelings and attitudes, even though it is not a high-stake test. Besides, the implementation of USP also reduces the washback effect of the English final examination. Keywords: Washback effect, final examination, teachers’ and students’ voices

Abstract

Due to the lack of current study numbers discussing English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, this study aims to investigate the test takers’ point of view on the TOEFL ITP test, mainly paper based-test and computer-based TOEFL, the similar TOEFL ITP test but employing computer screen as media. The latest study about those two assessments is necessary since both kinds of TOEFL media are massively implemented, particularly backward and after the pandemic Covid19. A survey methodology is employed in this study by spreading questionnaires. The scores gained from those two disparate TOEFL tests are described statistically. The gathered data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis to outline the perspectives of the test-takers on TOEFL PBT and CBT. Fifty-two participants from various education background levels, ages and genders partaking in this study. As a result, this study reveals that the implementing a computer screen for TOEFL obtained more positive percentages than paper-based TOEFL tests. Further discussion concerning prior study and implications are presented

Abstract

This study investigates the digital proficiency of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers concerning language assessment development. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, it explores the subjective experiences and perceptions of EFL teachers engaged in constructing language tests within educational contexts. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants, each representing diverse backgrounds in English Language Teaching (ELT). Moreover, thematic analysis was utilized to interpret the collected data systematically. The findings reveal specific challenges encountered by teachers in implementing interactive language assessments, including the identification of appropriate instructional materials, selection of suitable assessment models, and integration of digital tools into teaching methodologies. Moreover, participants suggest that technology can positively impact student engagement, motivation, and collaboration during assessments. By recognizing the continuous nature of language learning and assessment, educators can better tailor their approaches to meet the evolving needs of language learners. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on language assessment practices, highlighting the importance of incorporating digital resources and fostering a supportive learning environment for students.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of gamification on English language teaching, focusing on student engagement, motivation, and overall learning experiences. To address a research gap in understanding the specific effects of gamified learning environments in this context, this qualitative research adopts a case study design, employing semi-structured interviews with ten students attending Islamic Senior High Schools. Thematic analysis reveals three main themes: Positive Impact on Engagement and Attitude, Motivation Through Competition, and Effective and Enjoyable Learning Activities. Participants have observed increased class attendance, a boost in their enthusiasm, and positive attitudes toward learning English, attributing these changes to gamification. The findings indicate that gamification not only positively has a beneficial impact on both student engagement and motivation but also enhances the overall learning environment. Implications for educators and policymakers involve the potential integration of gamified strategies to create dynamic, attractive language learning environments. The study provides new insights into the existing body of knowledge on the use of gamification in education, emphasizing the need for future investigation into its long-term effects on language competency and cultural contexts.
