Abstract

This research aimed to find out the questioning strategy used by teacher, the ways of the teacher use the questioning strategy and the ways of the teacher's questioning strategy help students to be more active in learning English at SMP Telkom Makassar. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the observation by video recorder and interview by audio recorder. The data was taken from an English teacher at SMP Telkom Makassar. The result of this research showed that the teacher employed prompting questions and probing question. The teacher applied prompting question and probing question by giving clues or instructions to questions, guiding students to easily answer questions and explore specific questions so that it can help students to be more active and communicative in the learning process. It can be concluded that the questioning strategy used by the teacher, namely prompting questions and probing questions, can help students to be more active and communicative in the learning process.

Abstract

The research aims to describe and find out the three following objects: (1) the teachers’ paralanguage forms used by teachers in EFL classroom, (2) the way the teachers use their paralanguage in EFL classroom, (3) the impacts of teachers’ paralanguage toward EFL students’ learning motivation. This research used mix method (the QUAL-Quan model). The instruments used in collecting the data were classroom observation, questionnaire and interview. In order to get the sample, the researchers used purposive sampling. There were 2 English teachers and 60 students from two different classes in eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Polewali as the sample of this research. The result of the research showed that teachers used paralanguage which consists of body language and voice tone while teaching in the classroom. The used of paralanguage by the teachers are different in the certain things like movement or posture. The teachers’ paralanguage has positive impact in the teaching-learning process and helped students understand better the content taught. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the teachers’ paralanguage during teaching and learning process made students to be motivated to learn, focused their attention to the teachers’ explanations, and made them confidence in participating the learning process. Hence, it is obvious that teachers’ paralanguage is crucial elements to use well by the teachers because it gives contribution to encourage EFL students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

The research aims to describe and find out the way of lecturer used weekly quizzes in EFL classroom. This research used qualitative methods. The population in this study was the lecturer and the 3rd year students of English Education Study Program in Universitas Negeri Makassar. The instrument of the research was observation. The sample for this research consists of 1 (one) lecturer of English Education Department at State University of Makassar. The result of the research found that the use of weekly quizzes in EFL classroom it can be a tool to determine and measure students' understanding of the material that has been taught previously.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of English learning media used by their teachers during the covid-19 pandemic. The researchers applied descriptive qualitative method to achieve the research objectives. The data collected were in the form of questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study were students of SMPN 1 Tarowang. The population used in this study is class VIII consisting of four classes and using 5 samples for each class using random sampling where the total sample is 20 students. Based on the findings and discussion of the previous chapter, the researchers conclude the Students' perceptions of the use of WhatsApp group media in online English learning at SMPN 1 Tarowang have many positive perceptions. This is supported by questionnaires and interviews which show that many students have positive perceptions in their responses. Of the several themes found, two of them are included in positive perceptions, namely flexibility and affective. Perception of using WhatsApp group media explained that WhatsApp group was an easily accessible medium and almost all students already understood its use. Meanwhile, according to students, zoom meetings have features that are not so easy to understand. WhatsApp media and zoom meetings should be used in schools that have easy internet access or in schools located close to the city.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the development of vocabulary mastery by using a story' retelling technique. The researchers used a quantitative method with a pre- experimental research design and used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research is class X MIPA Tahfidz, with 34 students. The instrument used is a vocabulary test (pretest and post-test) that aims to obtain data in this research. The results of the data analysis showed that with the use of story' retelling techniques, students' vocabulary mastery increased. It can be proven by the t test value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05), which means (H0) of this research was rejected and (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of the story' retelling technique can develop the vocabulary mastery of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 6 Wajo.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the values of character education in the English textbooks of Class 11 Senior High School. The data in this study are in the form of texts containing the value of character education. The data source of this research is the class XI senior high school English books curriculum 2013. There are two data collection techniques used in this study, namely the reading technique and the note-taking technique. Then, the data analysis technique in this study went through three stages, namely (1) reduction, (2) presentation, and (3) drawing conclusions. In addition, the data validity checking technique was carried out, namely discussions with experts in assessing the results of data analysis so that all findings in this study can be justified. The results of this study found that there are 14 values of character education, namely the values of religious, honest, disciplined, diligent, creative, independent, nationalism, appreciation, communicative, peace-loving, intellectual, beauty, sympathy, and loyal character values which are implemented through text sentences and images. It can be concluded that the 11th-grade high school English textbook only has 14-character education values. There are 4 values that are not found in the textbook, which include the values of tolerance, curiosity, democracy, and love for the homeland.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the students’ difficulties, the most common difficulties faced by students, and how the students overcome the difficulties in writing thesis background. The participants of this research were eight students in the English education study program of UNM in the academic year 2018. The method of this research was a descriptive qualitative design with interviews and documents as the instrument for collecting data. The result of this research showed three points as follows: 1) The difficulties encountered by the students of the English Education study program at Universitas Negeri Makassar are: a) writing and organizing ideas, b) Novelty, c) Importance, d) lack of vocabulary and e) Grammar. 2) The most common difficulties encountered by the students are writing and organizing ideas. This difficulty arises because there is still a lack of ability to write and understand what should be included in the background. 3) Their way to solve the difficulties they faced when writing a thesis background was three events namely; a) working independently, b) developing or joining a community of practice, and c) working with the supervisor.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the development of students’ critical reading comprehension through short stories. The method used a quantitative design with a pre-experimental research design with a sample of 29 students from class XI MIA using a cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining the data, the researchers used the pre-test as an instrument. The results of the data analysis showed that by using short stories, the students’ critical reading comprehension developed. It can be proven by the t-test value was lower than P (0.000 < 0.05) which means that H0 this research was rejected and H1 was accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of short stories develops students’ critical reading comprehension among the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 8 Selayar.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the anxiety has an impact on speaking performance, to find out personality has an impact on speaking performance, and to find out students’ strategies to reduce anxiety in speaking performance. This research took place at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. The researchers used convergent parallel. This research uses quantitative and qualitative design. The sample of the questionnaire is 30 students and Interviews with 5 students were taken using a purposive sampling technique. There are four students had high-level anxiety (13,3%), ten students had medium-level anxiety (33,3%), and sixteen students had low-level anxiety (53,3%). (2) students’ explanations in interviews regarding strategies to reduce their anxiety have several strategies that they do such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, resignation, and looking away. The researchers can conclude that different levels of anxiety and personality can have an impact on speaking performance. But students at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar have a good strategy to reduce their anxiety when speaking performance.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the strategy used by the English teacher in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching and the ways of the English teacher uses the strategy in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected from interviews using Zoom meetings and documentation of the English teacher’s lesson plans. The data was taken from the teacher at Bosowa School Makassar. The result of this research showed that the English teacher at Bosowa School Makassar applied almost all of the multiple intelligence in his teaching strategies, excluding musical intelligence. These strategies are (1) linguistic intelligence; regulation to speak English, debate, and write a personal letter, (2) logical-mathematical intelligence; English riddle games, (3) spatial intelligence; caption material and hot seating game, (4) bodily-kinesthetic intelligence; treasure hunting game, (5) interpersonal intelligence; make dialog, (6) intrapersonal intelligence; daily journal, and (7) naturalist intelligence; field trip. The English teacher distinguished the way he used strategy in actualizing multiple intelligence to encourage and motivate students to enhance their skills in learning.  It can be concluded that using various strategies in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching can encourage and motivate students to enhance their skills in learning.
