Abstract

Consistency is very essential in writing editorial rubrics because it shows commitments of the author and his institution. Author and media institution who have high commitments in writing editorial argumentation can increase the level of readers' confidence toward the content of editorials. This research is intended to optimize the consistency of the construction of argument by commitment in Bisnis Indonesia editorials. Data collection methods used were documentation and interview methods. The research data were in the form of editorial texts containing arguments. The data analysis method used was the qualitative data analysis. Besides, the content analysis method was also applied. The research result showed that there were inconsistencies of arguments by commitment used in the editorials. The inconsistencies occured because a deep understanding of the concept of argument by commitment in writing editorials has not been understood well by editorial writers. Therefore, the steps of optimizing the consistency of argument by commitment must be done as follows: (1) understanding the concept of argument by commitment, (2) designing an argument by commitment scheme, and (3) asking critical questions.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding patterns of arguments of argumentative paragraphs in the discussion parts of accredited economic journal articles. The research result shows that patterns of arguments can be differetiated into six, namely (1) Claim-Data; (2) Claim–Data 1–Data 2; (3) Data–Claim; (4) Data 1 – Data 2 – Claim; (5) Data 1– Data 2 – Data 3 – Data 4 – Data 5- Warrant – Claim; (6) Data 1 – Data 2 – Claim – Data 3 – Data 4 – Data 5. Thus it can be concluded that argument patterns of economic journal articles must be continuously increased. The effort of increasing quality of journal articles is considered urgent since Indonesian scientists who contribute ideas through writing journal articles will automatically increase scientific participation in the academic realm broadly.

Abstract

Abstract

A constellation of arguments is present in each component of a journal article. Understanding the constellation of arguments in such journal articles is important because they will directly affect the writing of journal articles. This study aims to describe the constellation of arguments in the structure of the intended journal article. Data were collected by the observation method. The technique used in the framework of applying the method of referencing was a competent free observation technique. The next technique is note-taking. Data validation is done theoretically by confirming the available data on the theories. Also, validation is carried out to experts who master the matters of argument. The data validation was done after the data had been classified and verified. The data analysis method applied in this research is the method of distribution or distribution. The technique applied is a technique for direct elements. The data analysis method applied was the content analysis method. The results of the analysis were presented with informal presentation techniques. This research had produced the findings of the constellation of arguments in sections of journal articles. The parts of the journal article that may be present in the argument are in the following sections: (1) background, (2) literature review, (3) method, and (4) discussion. There is no argument in the conclusion section of the paper.

Abstract

The importance of using modal qualifiers as a component of argumentative writing in the discussion section of student theses has not been fully realized by students. In fact, this component greatly determines the level of strength of the argument as a vehicle for conveying scientific truth. Scientific truth can be tested through the strength of the argument that appears in the selection of the types of modal qualifiers that accompany the position statement. This study aims to describe the manifestation of the form and function of the modal qualifier as a booster in argumentative writing for thesis discussion. The research data is in the form of excerpts of claims which contain boosters from the thesis discussion section of students of the Indonesian Language Education Master’s Program at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Data was collected by listening method with note-taking technique. Furthermore, the stages of classification and typification of data are carried out. The analytical method used in this study is the distributional analysis method and the content analysis method. The results of this study are the following forms of capital qualifiers as boosters: (1) definitely, (2) necessary, (3) must, (4) certainly, and variations in form. This study also found seven booster functions as follows: (1) affirming by showing confidence, (2) affirming by giving recommendations, (3) affirming by confirming something, (4) affirming by confirmation of clarity, (5) affirming by inferring purpose, (6) affirming of intent by ensuring, (7) affirming by suggesting something.

Abstract

To comprehensively examine the quality of argumentative writing, it is important to integrate the aspects of structure and substance. This study seeks to foreground the application of Intellectual Standards (IS) as a core component of the argumentative writing process. The research aims to determine the quality of argumentation in terms of structure using the TAP Toulmin concept and substance using IS. The research participants were 80 high school students in Central Java, Indonesia. A mixed method approach with an exploratory sequential QUAL-quan design is adopted. The results show that the quality of the arguments in terms of structure and substance is in the low category. Structurally, 97.5% of students' written arguments ranged from 1.1 to 2.0 on a scale of 0.0-5.0. In substance, 81.25% of students' argumentation ability scores are in the range of 04.9 - 09.6 on a scale of 0.00-24.00. In addition, the findings show that the completeness of the structure influences the substance score. Furthermore, the results of this study can be used as a reference for teachers in teaching argument texts. Elements of warrant, backing, modal qualifier, and rebuttal must be emphasized in preparing argumentative texts. Keywords: Argumentative Texts, Structure and Substance of Arguments, Toulmin, Intellectual Standards

Abstract

This research aims to describe students' perceptions regarding the integration of linguistic-visual multimodality texts in the design of developing Indonesian morphology textbooks. Data were obtained by applying the nonface-to-face interview method through a list of questions to explore opinions and expectations about the need to integrate linguistic-visual multimodality texts in the design of Indonesian morphology textbooks. Data analysis was carried out by applying the equivalent method which includes identification, classification, and interpretation steps. The findings of this research illustrate that students responded positively to the integration of linguistic-visual aspects in the design of developing Indonesian morphology textbooks. The integration of elements such as images, tables, graphs, photos, text, colors, and infographics in textbook design was assessed very positively by respondents.
