Abstract

Background: Bone density, an important factor in functional bone quality, can affect the success of implant osteointegration or orthodontic treatment. A number of studies report that chonic periodontitis constitutes one risk factor of osteoporosis characterized by low bone mineral density and that the mandible is susceptible to osteoporosis. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate mandibular bone density in animal subjects suffering from chronic periodontitis. Methods: 40 male Wistar rats were divided into four chronic periodontitis groups and four control groups (each group n=5). As chronic periodontitis models, the subjects were injected with 2×109 CFU/ml of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the sulcular gingiva, whereas control group members were injected with normal saline. After 2, 3, 4 and 6-week injection periods, the subjects were sacrificed and radiographic examination of the mandibular bone subsequently performed. Mandibular bone density was evaluated by histometric analysis. Results: The mandibular bone density in members of the chronic periodontitis group was significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). The reduced mandibular bone density in the chronic periodontitis group was in line with the protracted bouts of periodontitis. Conclusion: Reduced mandibular bone density was found in the chronic periodontitis model. The longer the duration of a bout of chronic periodontitis, the greater the reduction in mandibular bone density.

Abstract

Background: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV2 recently became a pandemic worldwide, such as in Indonesia. Social distancing is one of the recommended mitigations to reduce the risk of disasters, such as morbidity and mortality caused by COVID-19. Community compliance with social distancing is a part of the pandemic control.Aims: This study identified knowledge, attitudes, and behavior towards the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 transmission through social distancing during COVID-19 pandemic among Indonesian community.Methods: This descriptive study applied a cross-sectional design and distributed closed questions with online  questionnaire randomly to 34 provinces in Indonesia on social media networks and e-mail. This study successfully collected 1,102 respondents from 29 provinces in Indonesia. The data were analyzed descriptively by calculating frequency, percentage, and cross-tabulation.Results: This study had successfully identified  99%, 59%, and 93% of respondents with good knowledge, positive attitudes, and good behavior respectively towards  social distancing. Among the respondents who had good knowledge showed positive attitudes (58.85%) and good behavior (93.3%). The respondents who had positive attitudes showed good behavior (96.7%).Conclusion: Indonesian community had good knowledge, attitude and behavior towards social distancing as a way to prevent the virus transmission. This strongly supports disaster mitigation in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Keywords: attitudes, behavior, COVID-19, knowledge, social distancing.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has been involved in a variety of systemic disorders and suspected as a potential risk factor for fetal growth restriction. Periodontal pathogenic bacteria may actively regulate embryonic development, implantation and placental trophoblast cell invasion. This study aimed to analyze the role of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 to maintain fetal growth in Porphyromonasgingivalis-infected pregnant rats. Female rats were infected with live-Porphyromonas gingivalis at concentration of 2x109 cells/ml into subgingival sulcus area of the maxillary first molar before and during pregnancy. They were sacrificed on gestational day (GD)-14 and GD20. The weight and length of placentas and fetuses were evaluated. The expression of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 in macrophages and trophoblast cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. On GD14, TNF-α (R2=0.416;P=0.000) and IL-10 (R2=0.187;P=0.012) had an important role to increase expression of caspase-3 in the placenta, but only TNF-α (R2=0.393;P=0.000 ) was able to increase the expression of caspase-3 on GD20. TNF-α and caspase-3 also had an important role (P<0.000) to decrease fetal weight, fetal length and placental weight on GD14 and GD20, but it was not the case with IL-10 (P>0.000). The increasing expressions of TNF-α and IL-10 did not only enhance immune protection, but also maintained the trophoblast cells survival by regulating expression of caspase-3. Porphyromonas gingivalis infection in maternal periodontal tissue can lead to decrease in placental weight, fetal weight and fetal length which mediated by increasing expression of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 in the placenta.

Abstract

Microbicidal mechanism with producing free radical superoxide is one of neutrophil response to the bacterialinvasion. When overproducted, the free radical superoxide greater than antioxidan defense system and destroyed thecell itself. P.gingivalis had been knowed as the major bacteria that induce periodontal inflammation. These bacteriacan stimulated neutrophil activities. This was aimed to determinate the superoxide production from neutrophilstimulated with P.gingivalis. Neutrophil as samples were isolated from subject who fulfill the selected criteria. Theintracelluler superoxide production was determinated by nitroblue tetra zolium (NBT)test and the extracellulerproduction by spectrophotometer with wave length 580 nm. The result showed there was superoxide production fromneutrophil stimulated by P.gingivalis. It was concluded that the stimulation of P.gingivalis on neutrophil can promotesuperoxide production both intracelluler and extracelluler.

Abstract

Abstract: Recently, the need for orthodontic treatment has increased along with the increasing need and public awareness of the importance of dental and oral health. During treatment, problems sometimes occur with periodontal tissue. Orthodontic devices that bond to the tooth surface can cause difficulties in controlling plaque, especially in marginal areas which can cause inflammation and gingival overgrowth. Too high tensile strength and weak tissue capacity are also the factors that can cause gingival overgrowth. This case report described the management of gingival growth in a patient under fixed orthodontic treatment. We reported an 18-year-old female patient with a good systemic condition that had gingival overgrowth localized on the anterior part of mandibula. The surgical intervention was performed by using conventional surgical methods. Its goal was to remove the gingival pocket, therefore, the plaque could be easily controlled. The use of a scalpel was considered very effective for eliminating excessive gingiva. Two weeks after surgical treatment, the gum resulted in good repair. The continuity of orthodontic treatment could be achieved properly after 3-month surgical treatment. Instructions and motivation to maintain oral hygiene were important to avoid recurrence. In addition, multidisciplinary dentistry between orthodontist and periodontist was needed to achieve a better result. Keywords: gingival overgrowth; gingivectomy; orthodontic appliance
