Abstract

This study aims i). to find out the representative speech acts used in Queen Elizabeth II’s speech entitled Queen Urges ‘Self-Discipline and Resolve’ In Corona Virus Speech, ii). to analyse the meaning behind the utterance of Queen Elizabeth II’s speech entitled Queen Urges ‘Self-Discipline and Resolve’ In Corona Virus Speech. The analysis of the data uses qualitative method as the study presented descriptively according to theory of speech acts proposed by Searle (1976) to classify the representative speech acts and theory of contextual meaning proposed by Yule (1996) to analyse the meaning behind the utterances. The informal method is applied in presenting the result of the analysis. The result of this study shows that there are 20 of 28 utterances that identified as representative speech acts used in Queen Elizabeth II’s speech which means the speaker used representative the most in her speech.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the behind meaning or messages of the semiotic signs that were found in the four movie posters of Despicable Me. The data of this study is downloaded from https://id.pinterest.com, an online application (that can be downloaded in the play store) that provide services for people to exploring, searching or sharing images. To discover the behind messages of the semiotic signs in the movie posters, this study uses the theory of meaning by Barthes (1977) and the theory of color meaning by Wierzbicka (1996) as a supporting theory. The method used to analyze the data on this research is the qualitative research method. In the end, the result of this study reveals, all the behind messages of the semiotic sign found in the four posters are represent the movie by giving more context about the story, the theme, and the character in the movie.

Abstract

AbstractThe aims of this study to analyse the types and the reason of used code switching found in My Bastard Prince novel. This study used the theory proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987:118) to analysed the types of code switching and three types of code switching that occurs namely: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. meanwhile to analysed the reason of used code switching used the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) and seven reasons are found namely: talking about particular topic, expressing feeling about something, expressing group identity, interjection, repetition used for clarification, quoting somebody else, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. The most dominant type appear is inter-sentential switching and the less dominant is intra-sentential switching and descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile for the dominant reason of the reason of code switching appear is expressing feeling about something, and for the less reason appear is repetition used for clarification.

Abstract

The chosen song lyrics of Rita Ora are the subject of the investigation. The song lyrics were analyzed using Knickerbocker and Renninger's (1963:367) theory to determine the types of figurative languages found in the song lyrics, Leech's (1981:9-19) theory of meaning to describe the meaning of each type of figurative language found, and Halliday's (1985:10) theory to analyze the context of the situation in Rita Ora's selected song lyrics. The data for this study was gathered using descriptive qualitative methods. This study looked at ten different types of figurative language in Rita Ora's song lyrics. The most frequent appearance was irony. Connotative meaning, affective meaning, conceptual meaning, collocative meaning, social meaning, reflected meaning, and thematic meaning were discovered. All song lyrics emphasize connotative meaning. Before delving into the meaning of the ten Rita Ora songs, it is necessary to first determine the context of the situation in the song. The data is then analyzed to determine the field, tenor, and mode. Field is used to analyze what happens in the song, tenor is used to determine who participates in the song, and mode is used to determine how the data is conveyed.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language and the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album "Fearless." There are two theories used in the study. The first is the theory of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974), and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The researcher found four types of figurative language used in Taylor Swift's songs, such as simile, hyperbole, synecdoche, and allusion. The data was collected by reading the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song. As a result of this analysis, the researcher found 4 types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were: simile consists of 1 or (17%), metaphor consists of 1 or (17%), hyperbole consists of 3 or (50%), synecdoche consists of 1 or (17%), allusion consists of 1 or (17). The most dominant type of figurative language found in those songs is hyperbole, with a percentage of 50%. Two out meaning of seven types of meaning used in those lyrics in order to understand the figurative language in those lyrics; they were connotative meaning and conceptual meaning.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims explain the contextual meaning found in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Lyons (1981) and to explain the context of the situation support the analysis of meaning in the lyrics of Michael Buble song lyrics used theory of Halliday and Hasan (1985). To analyze the data the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The result showed there are 4 contextual meaning found, these contextual meaning grouped in 2 or (50%) words , 1or (25%) phrase and 1 or (25%) clause. The e contextual meaning consist of informal language ,figurative language, which analyzed based on the context of the situation showed that the field or the topic of each song about love between young adults, Michael Buble and her story about love and her child. the tenor of the participant of each song has similarity using figurative language , idioms, informal language. The mode of each song is the same that all of them are written text but can be read if those song are sung.

Abstract

The idiomatic expressions is a common phenomenon in language use as a communication tool between humans. The use of idiomatic expressions can be presented in the dialogue and expressed in a literary work, such as in a song. It led the researcher to study further 1) the types of idiomatic expressions and 2) the meanings presented in the idiomatic expressions of 6 songs in "Positions" album by Ariana Grande. The researcher used qualitative research techniques combined with observation methods.Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher used McCarthy & O'Dell's(2010) theory to specify the type of expression and Leech's (1981) theory to describe the meaning presented in the idiomatic expressions. The result discovered 18 data that belong to idiom expressions, with details: fixed statements (14), trinomials (3), and prepositional phrases (1). Each idiom expression has its specific meaning, which aims to enable the audience to understand the true meaning. According to Leech (1981), all the meaning presented in the idiom expressions belongs to thematic meaning.

Abstract

Digital transformation has been sounding since 2021 and massive improvement is still being conducted after the outbreak. The transformation cannot be separated from the use of language as the media in linking the demand and supply, given that copywriting skill is urgently needed as many people enjoy content. By organizing workshop on copywriting skill, the goal of supporting side hustler to get the opportunity in this field was gratefully achieved. A day workshop collaborated with Badan Kreatif Denpasar (Denpasar Creative Agency) has raised the confidence of youth as the target to elicit their passion in copywriting. The impact of the workshop is positively encouraging the youth passion in having remote working as their dominant personality trait.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of conversational maxims violation that the violated by the main character found in the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Movie. Conversational maxim is a set of rule proposed by Grice (1975) that categorizes into four types, which are maxim of quantity, quality, relation, and manner. These rules are important to make an effective and clear conversation. By violating maxims, the participants of the conversation broke the rules of cooperative principle. The participants of the conversation seem to hide the real intended meanings and certain purposes which are conveyed by the speaker behind the utterance. This research uses theory by Grice’s Cooperative Principle and also support with theory by Cutting to analyze four types of conversational maxims violation. The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative method. The amount of maxim violation of quantity is 6 (40%), that appears most frequently throughout the film. The violation of maxim of quality becomes the second violation that frequently found, that brings the total 4 violations (26,6%), also the third violation that occurs is violations of maxim of relation with 3 violations in total (20%). The main character violates the maxim of manners 2 times in totals (13,4%) more than any other violation, which is the least common infraction in the film.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the many slang terms used in the movie. The approach employed in this study is the descriptive qualitative method with the observation method. To identify different categories of slang terms, the idea put forward by Allan & Burridge (2006) was applied. Both formal and informal techniques were used to communicate the data analysis. As a consequence, five categories of slang words namely fresh & creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping were discovered in The Kissing Booth 3 Movie. All of the slang terms have been categorized into their appropriate groups.
