Abstract

The context of the study is the ongoing protests and demonstrations by women in many places in Iran. This study aims to examine the demonstration of gender ideology and power in Sahebjam's Stoning of Soraya M. Qualitative descriptive method is used to investigate the relationship between gender ideology and power relations and how it creates a power imbalance between men and women in Iranian society. Stoning of Soraya M by Freidoune Sahebjam, published on September 12, 1990, serves as the primary data source for this study. Data are analysed through the lens of the Critical Discourse Analysis approach, specifically Lazar's Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (2007). The findings of the study suggest that the country's laws, including the Constitution, the Civil Code, and the Criminal Code, create a complicated legal environment for women. While the Constitution guarantees equal civil rights for men and women, religious law supersedes other laws and is frequently abused by individuals to commit crimes against women. This study reveals how gender ideology and power relations to women reflected through discourse can demonstrate how women are treated in different parts of the world. Keywords: gender ideology, power, novel, feminist

Abstract

The inculcation of moral values in English textbooks, particularly in primary schools, has been a global concern in recent decades due to English’s growing importance as a global lingua franca and the impact it carries. Hence, the present study aimed to: (1) elucidate the realisation of moral values discursively represented in three primary school English textbooks entitled English Chest 1, 2 and 3, and (2) determine the extent of the textbooks’ contents in teaching the moral values. Fairclough’s (1995, 2013) framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) integrated with Kress & Van Leeuwen’s (2006) Visual Grammar Theory (VGT) was applied to elucidate the depiction of moral values in the textbooks. Additionally, Isaacs’ (2001) framework of Developmental Moral Values and Smetana’s (2006) Social Domain Theory were also adopted to look at how the contents of the textbooks teach moral values. The results show that (1) modesty (8,99%), curiosity (8,44%), perseverance (7,08%), and friendship (6,53%) are the most frequently occurring values in the three EFL textbooks. (2) The discursive realisation has revealed that certain fundamental moral values such as audacity, sociability, industriousness, respect for others, and responsibility are taught through the depictions of verbal-visual images in both school and familial contexts. Importantly, the three EFL textbooks have fairly adhered to the Indonesian moral (character) education goals and stipulation. They also provide implications on both primary school students and English teachers’ pedagogical, linguistic, and moral development so as to raise EFL textbook designers’ awareness to develop more morally-laden content.

This study investigates the impact of the PowToon application on enhancing students' vocabulary. Utilizing a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental Design, data were gathered through observations and tests. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics. The sample comprised 52 tenth-grade students at Tunas Pelita High School. The experimental group, which used PowToon, had a pretest average of 36.19 compared to the control group's 38.40. However, post-tests revealed a score of 82.31 for the experimental group and 71.70 for the control group, indicating a more significant vocabulary improvement in the PowToon cohort. The findings confirm that the PowToon application positively affects vocabulary acquisition. The research underscores PowToon’s potential to enhance students' comprehension, spelling, and pronunciation of English vocabulary, ultimately bolstering their overall learning outcomes.

Abstract

This article examines the activation of a schema based on the game, the realization of the Schema Theory in the game character named Eunie, and the proof of Eunie’s status as the primary character in the game. The study analyzes the factors that trigger the activation of a schema and how it relates to the game’s structure. It explores how the Schema Theory manifests in the game character Eunie, highlighting her role as the central character. The research provides evidence to support the claim that Eunie is, in fact, the main character in the game. The study at hand utilizes the Schema Theory components introduced by J. Piaget to investigate the research on Cognitive Stylistics. In order to characterize the themes that are realized in the game Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the research is carried out utilizing a qualitative descriptive design with case study. The research focuses on a schema that influences how people see their surroundings and the world around them. It suggests that in order for a player to completely understand an idea or a tale from the game, that player’s prior knowledge is necessary. There are seven components in the schema theory that must be outlined: Figure and Ground, Prototypicality, Resonance and Ambience, Metaphor and Framing, Simulation and Projection, Mind-Modeling, and Text-Worlds. The result emphasized the importance of schemas in aiding readers to interpret the game’s world and characters’ accents. This study highlights the significance of Schema Theory in Cognitive Stylistics as a valuable framework for comprehending character development and literary analysis in video games.
