Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the meatball composition microscopically. Twelve commercial meatball samples marketed in Bogor were used in this study. All samples were processed for histopathology slides. The 5 m meatballs sections were stained with Gomori’s Chrome Alum Hematoxylin. Five (41.67%) of 12 samples showed parts of smooth muscle and cartilage within the meatball section. This findings did not comply with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) regulation, that the meatball should contain only the skeletal muscle. This study showed that the microscopic tissue examination could be utilized as a tool for tissue types detection qualitatively in meatball.

Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 is a secondary metabolite of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus, and Penicillium puberulum fungus, which is frequently found as contaminants of feed/raw materials of poultry feed. Such compounds have toxic and carcinogenic effects that can cause damage to various tissues/organs, which can further decrease the performance of broiler and cause various degrees of immunosuppressive effects. This study was designed to evaluate the most common pathological lesion in the liver of commercial broiler after consumption of aflatoxin contamination feed in Kupang City of East Nusa Tenggara Province. The research was conducted on 10 broiler farms in Kupang City. Samples of liver were taken for further processing according to the staining method of haematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The results of pathological examination of tissues were analyzed descriptively. Based on the results of this experiment, it can be concluded that pathological examination on the liver showed an early-stage of liver cirrhosis, atrophy of bursa fabricius, thymus and lien due to the necrosis and depletion of lymphocytes.

Abstract

Sopi and moke of East Nusa Tenggara Province are some traditional beverage made from nira or interest leads palm (Borassus flabellifer L.). Several studies have shown that sopi and moke have an antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activity of plants derivatives may be influenced by the content of phytochemical compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the class of phytochemical compounds in sopi and moke. Phytochemical testing performed on seven chemical compounds, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols hydroquinone, steroids, triterphenoid, tannins and saponins. The results show that sopi contains of alkaloids and moke contains of phenol hydroquinone and saponins. Antimicrobial activity of sopi and moke supposed to be caused by these three compounds and this could be a potential source of an alternative disinfectant candidate.

Abstract

Two years old and one and half years local intact female dogs from Kupang were submitted to Veterinery Pathogy Laboratorium, Nusa Cendana University. These dogs showed symptomps: coughing, loss appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Grossly, there was a smooth surface nodul on the distal of oesophagus with fistula in the middle of it where the worm came out. Microscopically, Spirocerca lupi was surrounded by proliferated spindle shape cells with round or ovoid nuclei as well as 12 mitotic figures over 10 non-overlapping high power fields (400X). These are characteristics of fibrosarcoma. This is the first official report of the existence of spirocercosis in Kabupaten Kupang.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of glycerol and dimethylacetamide (DMA) in beltsville thawing solution (BTS) extender. Semen samples were collected from three boars of the Duroc breed (n=5) and were evaluated microscopically and macroscopically. Semen that have been evaluated and meets the following criteria: has motility characteristics >70%, concentration >300 million/ml and abnormality 20%; was accepted as appropriate samples. Semen samples were divided into four tubes and were diluted with 5 ml of BTS. The diluted semen was left for two hours in the temperature range from 20 to 22°C before was centrifuged for 15 minutes (500G). The pellet of centrifuged semen was taken as much as 1 ml with its supernatant. The BTS glycerol (BTSG), BTS-DMA (BTSD), BTS-Glycerol-DMA (BTSG-D) were added into the pellet. The diluted semen was packed into straw of 0.5 ml and was equilibrated for 2 hours in 4 °C. The equilibrated semen was frost with the steam of nitrogen and stored in liquid nitrogen. The quality of frozen semen was assessed at least 24 hour after freezing process. The results indicate that the sperm motility after thawing in BTS extender BTSD is 52.14±0.4%, ,higher than the other two extenders (P<0.05). Thus, it is conclude that the DMA concentration in BTS extender maintains the quality of frozen semen from the Duroc breed better than other extenders.

Abstract

Optimization of resources is very important in achieving high productivity laying birds in order to support the fulfillment of consumption and ensure the economic sustainability of the farm. Laying poultry farms can not be separated from the variable costs, and the highest cost is bird’s feed. Therefore, the main indicator is feed conversion ratio (FCR), which depicts the conversion of feed into eggs. Most of the poultry farm business in Indonesia is a small-medium scale traditionally managed farms, so some aspects of farm management inhibits optimal performance. One of the important parts that can lead to a waste of resources ranch is about a lack of attention to parasite control. Parasites disadvantage due to being the host competitors in getting nutrients. This researchattempts to study the problem of controlling cestodes at poultry farm folk in Magetan, East Java. The results showed high cestode infection rate, with prevalence reaching 100% at postmortem. The main problems found were a low frequency of cleaning dirt, the host control between (flies) is not maximized, and the treatment of intestinal worms (deworming) with drugs that are not appropriate.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the speed the healing of burns used amniotic membrane by propolis and propolis amniotic membrane without white rats (Rattus norvegicus). This study was an experimental study with the technique of sampling by completely randomized design. The variables measured were the speed of healing old wounds and wound healing time (days). This study used 30 rats were divided into 4 groups. The group (P1) as a negative control, the White Rat (Rattus norvegicus) wrapped in sterile gauze, group (P2) as a positive control, the White Rat (Rattus norvegicus) by betadine and wrapped in sterile gauze. The group (P3) Rats (Rattus norvegicus) wrapped with amniotic membrane + sterile gauze and groups (P4) Rats (Rattus norvegicus) + propolis + + gauze sterile amniotic membrane. The result showed that Speeds healing of burns negative kontrol, PI and P2 there are differences, also between PI and P2. Between control positive and PI showed not difference. It can show from some indications that include wet or dryness of the wound, whether there is swelling in the wound, the wound color (red or white), linkage outskirts of injuries, whether there is a scab, and the open or closed wounds, but the long time healing wounds (day) are different, PI and kontrol positive are the best result, they are nine days.

Abstract

Escherichia coli is a bacterium found in the intestines of humans and animals. Most strains of Escherichia coli are harmless. However, some strains, such as Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), can cause a disease transmitted to humans through contaminated food. Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli produce toxins, known as verotoxin thus also known as Verocytotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC). The aim of this study was to isolate and identify Escherichia coli O157:H7 from pigs, cattle and chickens. Samples were taken from pigs, cattle and chickens with diarrhea and identified by microbiological diagnostic. The result reveal, 18 of the 18 pig samples, 17 of 30 samples of cattle and 34 of 46 samples of chicken identified as E. coli O157:H7 with prevalence 100%, 56.6% and 73.9% respectively.
