Abstract

In the 21st century, science literacy is the main competence and indicator to achieve better and more sustainable future. However, limited facilities and resources raise as an issue that have implications to the less optimal application of science literacy empowerment in various regions, including in several areas in East Nusa Tenggara. The objective of this community service is to do mentoring program on the empowerment of science literacy for students at emergency schools in NTT. The target is school-age children living in the island who are subjected to illiteracy due to lack of supporting educational facilities. Methods implemented were through these four stages: (1) initial observation of the area, (2) mapping the problem, (3) socializing the programs, and (4) organizing the science literacy movement. The activities carried out were making educational learning media utilizing plastic waste, creating a reading corner equipped with some interesting books as additional references for children and parents to know about the outside world, creating educational games and actions for the natural surroundings. The results of the observation confirm that the community service program run effectively. It is indicated that the community service project is able to foster students’ interest in reading, writing, and arithmetic. This community service activity is expected to take part in the eradicating illiteracy rate and reducing number of productive age dropouts in East Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

One of the efforts to prevent the effects of climate change was the introduction of the concept of carbon footprints from an early age to students. Science subjects in this school have included elements of environmental knowledge in their subject matter. However, mitigation and adaptation efforts to climate change were still lacking recognition. The purpose of this study was to introduce and measure the extent to which elementary students are able to recognize the concept of carbon footprints and can use a simple carbon footprint calculator application in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. The study was conducted at MIM Kupang Karangdowo Klaten, Central Java. The activity was carried out on February 19, 2020 with the method of lectures, interviews, and simulations, followed by 11 teachers and 21 grade VI students. The flow of activities was divided into 3, namely: (1) counseling/explanation of the carbon cycle, global warming, carbon footprint and carbon footprint calculator, (2) interviews about the student's daily and weekly lifestyle or carbon footprint pattern, (3) socialization of the footprint calculator application carbon and usability observations. The activity ended with a simulation of a carbon footprint calculator for several students. From the study conducted, it can be seen that students are interested in this carbon footprint concept and were technically assessed as being able to use a carbon calculator without significant obstacles.

This community service program was conducted to 20 participants of the Regional Office of ‘Aisyiyah Malang through handwashing promotion using cleaners (such as soap, wet tissue, and hand sanitizer) to be applied to media called Nutrients Agar Plate (NAP). Then, the participants were to do gram staining to count number, type, and morphology of bacteria. The method implemented was desciptive data analysis. Finding shows that in the aspect of knowledge level, 75% of the participants were able to answer all questions correctly after the handwashing promotion program. On the count, there were 154 colonies of bacteria growing on unwashed fingers; 8 colonies on the fingers using hand sanitizer; 36 colonies on the fingers washed with soap, and 29 colonies with wet tissue. Handwashing habits provides knowledge to individuals of healthy living behaviour to prevent bacterial growth. It is concluded that hands washed with soap and running water, hand sanitizer, and wet tissue can actually reduce number of bacterial colonies as they contain bactericidal or bacteriostatic chemicals.
