JETA aims at reporting high-quality empirical and original research contributions for the benefit of teachers, lecturers, and researchers in the field of English Language Teaching, Applied Linguistics, Literatures, and English Language Studies. The scope includes theory and practice in English language teaching and learning, language teachers’ training and education, teaching English as a second or foreign language (TESL, TEFL), Applied Linguistics, English Literatures, and English Language Studies. Abstract

English is a language that is used by people around the world. Hence, it is necessary for everyone to learn it, including the students with special needs. This study aims to review the use of visual aids in teaching English for students with special needs, especially Autism Spectrum Disorder. The study is a library study that focuses on collecting theoretical and empirical studies about the use of visual aids in teaching students with ASD. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurological disorder that affects the function of the human brain. Visual aids are the tools or devices that are shown by the teacher in the classroom to help students understanding the learning materials. The study finds that the use of visual aids is effective for teaching English to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Therefore, teachers should consider using visual aids in teaching autistic students. This study is expected to give insightful information in educational fields.

Abstract

The research aimed to know the influence of using DRTA Strategy towards students’ reading ability at MTs Nurul Iman Pesawaran. The research was conducted at the eighth grade of MTs Nurul Iman Pesawaran in academic year 2020/2021. The writer took two clasess in the eighth grade as the samples. The population was 40 students’ in 2 clasess. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling technique. 20 students’ were as experimental class and 20 students’ were as control class. The main technique in measuring students’ reading comprehension was multiple choice test that consisted of 40 test items. The score for each item was 2,5 for true and 0 for wrong. In analyzing the data, the writer used t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, The result showed that t-test was 2.9. From the distribution table at the significance level of 5% is known that t-table = t (1- ½ α) (df) = 2.00 and at the significance level of 1% is known that t-table = t (1- ½ α) (df) = 2.37. It means t-test > t-table as in (2.9> 2.00 > 2.37). Based on the calculation, Ha was accepted, it means that there was an influence of using DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy towards the students’ reading ability at the eighth grade of MTs Nurul Iman Pesawaran in 2020/2021. Then the average score of students reading ability who learnt through DRTA (Direct Reading Thinking Activity) was higher than those who learnt reading throurgh conventional technique. It was 70.1 > 65.6. Based on the result above, it is clear that DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) can increase students’ reading ability at the eighth grade of MTs Nurul Iman Pesawaran in 2020/2021.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the influence of comic strips towards students’ reading comprehension. This technique helped the students to comprehend the story by imagining it with the strip of pictures. The objective of the research was to know the influence of comic strips towards students’ reading comprehension in recount text. In this research the writer used experimental method or known as descriptive quantitative research. The population was 48 students in 2 classes. The sample was taken by using Total Sampling Technique. The writer took all of the classes as the sample of research namely experimental and control class. It consisted of 45 students; the other students were absence. The main technique in measuring students’ reading comprehension was multiple choice which consisted of 40 items test. Each item has four options a,b,c, and d. The score each item was 2.5. In calculating the data analysis, the writer used t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, the writer got the result that was accepted. It was obtained that = 4.45, for α= 0.05 was 1.68 and for α=0.01 was 2.42 (4.45 > 1.68 < 2.42). So, was accepted. It meant that there was significant influence of comic strip toward students’ reading comprehension on recount text at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 8 Bandar Lampung in 2021/2022. Based on the result of the research, it is clear that comic strips had an influence to the students’ reading comprehension, especially in recount text.

Abstract

Language is the most important media for human’s communication. By using language, human can interact, socialize, and cooperate with others, because in essence language is a means of communication. Given the importance of language as a means of communication, in the process of conveying information to others it must be clear and easy to understand, like in literary works. Literary works can also consider as a part of communication. In every literary works, including in song lyric would contain a massage. Lyric songs usually contain experiences and ideas of the authors who are summarized in a particular theme, parsed and conveyed to listeners through language. Song lyrics are an expression of the author's feelings, thoughts and ideas which are realized in a special language. In this research, the researcher would like to research Parle A Mon Pere song, by Celine Dion. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which is collaborated with Jaques Lacan's psychoanalysis theory. Meanwhile, Barthes' myth theory is used to examine the hidden meanings which the songwriters want to convey. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher would carefully note data in the form of words, sentences and speech. The choice of content analysis techniques is analyzing words. The content analysis techniques are used to understand messages, seen as unstructured data. The result of this research is that researchers can find hidden meanings, that a girl will feel empty if she loses her father. This is obtained through the translation of the signifier and the signified, which is obtained from the sentence in the song Parle A Mon Pere, by Celine Dion.

Abstract

In this part, the writer would like to explain about the Effectiveness of using picture books media towards students’ vocabulary mastery and to know and describe the average score of the students’ vocabulary mastery who learn through picture book media. The method of this research was conducted by using experimental method. The population of this research was the students at the first semester of the eighth grade at MTs Negeri 1 Bandar Lampung 357 students in 10 classes. In this research, the writer got VIII A as the experimental class there are 33 students and VIII B as the control class there are 33 students. Intaking the sample, the writer used random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the writer used multiple choice test to measure the students’ reading comprehension. Multiple choice or objective response is a form of an objective assessment in which respondents are asked to select only correct answers from the choices offered as a list.In analyzing the data, the writer used .After analyzing the data used formula. Based on the result, the writer found that average score of student’s reading comprehension in experimental class higher than control class (). It means that, Picture book media were successful to increase the students’ vocbulary mastery. Then, the writer also concluded there is significant influence of picture books media towards students’ vocabulary mastery at eighth class of MTs Negeri 1 Bandar Lampung. It was proved by the result of calculation by using formula that was higher than ttabel ( 3.75> 2.00 > 2.66). Therefore, picture book media is an effective strategy which can be used by the teacher to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Many students in Senior High School cannot master reading ability it might be caused by the students’ inability of using dictionary, inability in comprehending the text and unfamiliarity of words. In overcoming this problem, the researcher tried to used of think predict read and conect strategy. In reading ability this strategy can help the students in comprehending the text easily. The objective of the research was to know the influence of of think predict read and conect strategy towards students’ reading ability. In this research the writer used experimental method. The population of this research was 281 students. The sample was taken by using Cluster Random Sampling technique. In data collecting technique the writer used test, the test was multiple choice, consisted of 40 items. Based on the result of the data analysis and computation which used the formula of ttest, the result of analysis the data is significant, which is ttest > ttab : 4.03 > 1.67. From the result of analysis data, the writer could to give some conclusions as 1).The average score of the students’ reading ability who were taught by think, predict, read, and connect strategy was higher than who were taught with conventional strategy. It was seen from average score of test on experimental class is higher than the average score of control class X1 = 76.2 > X2 = 67.78. 2).There is a significant influence of giving translation assignment towards students’ English reading ability. It was seen from the result of ttest > ttab : 4.03 > 1.67.

Abstract

The study was aimed to increase students’ reading comprehension through Guided Reading strategy at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Natar 2021/2022. The subjects of research were 35 students. The research was focused to increase students’ learning activities and students’ reading comprehension. The improvement of students’ reading comprehension showed mean score in pre-cycle was 58.71, there were 10 students or 28.57% who achieved target score of Minimum Mastery Criteria. The mean score in cycle 1 was 72.14, there were 20 students who achieved score above Minimum Mastery Criteria or 57.14%. The improvement of pre-cycle to cycle 1 was 13.43 or 28.57%. The mean score of cycle II was 81.82, there were 29 students who achieved score above Minimum Mastery Criteria or 82.85%. The improvement of reading test from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was 9.68 or 25.715%. While, from the students’ learning activities, the improvement of students’ learning activities showed mean score of students’ learning activities in cycle I was 7.26 with the criteria was quite active. While, the mean score of students’ learning activities in cycle II was 7.89 with the criteria was active. It could be concluded Classroom Action Research by conducting Guided Reading strategy improved students’ reading comprehension and students’ learning activities.

Abstract

Pronouns are closely related to demonstrative pronouns. It is recognized that the root of interrogative pronouns are indicative particles, which have the meaning of adverb, particle, and pronoun, and especially, indicative pronouns - personal. English pronouns can be counted among other types of pronouns of this language, because when they are used in a sentence, they have not only a question meaning, but also a different lexical and syntactic meaning. In this article researcher has considered about the process of borrowings in parts of speech and he also mentioned that, during long history pronouns did not borrow from a language to another language.

Abstract

This scientific article discusses slang as a medium of adolescent communication in social interactions between others. Because humans actually need communication in their lives, one of which is using language as a medium of communication. Because human language can convey messages, thoughts, feelings, goals effectively to others, it is also possible to bring about cooperation between individuals. Therefore, the role of language becomes very important in every facet of human life. This article was written with the aim of providing information that slang has become a medium or communication tool for adolescents, also explaining about something that has to do with language as a means of communication in every human social interaction. In writing this article using the literature review method, all data is obtained from relevant literature data. In the discussion of this article explains about slang as a medium of communication among teenagers. The characteristics of slang in the form of words, acronyms and abbreviations, factors that influence the emergence and use of slang as a medium of communication, also explain the impact of the use of slang in social interaction. As social creatures, of course, humans need communication in their lives in order to establish relationships between others. From the writing of this article, it can be seen that the millennial generation or teenagers already have creativity in communicating, both through abbreviations and acronyms in the form of Indonesian and English, so that it can show the context of communication culture in the modern and cool world of teenagers.
