Abstract

Artificial intelligent-based application helps people in many ways, one of which telling them jokes. This study aims at (1) investigating the types of jokes on Google Assistant application, and (2) describing linguistic aspects used in the jokes. There were several steps in conducting this study. Firstly, the data of this study were the jokes taken from “tell me a joke” feature on Google Assistant. As many as 58 jokes were collected as the data. Then, the data were coded and analysed based on its linguistic aspects in terms of sounds, meanings, and word formations. After all data were analysed, conclusions were drawn. There are two forms of jokes in this application namely riddle and one liner. In riddle, the jokes are presented in question-answer form, whereas one liner joke only consists of one or two sentences. There are several linguistic aspects in creating the jokes, namely homonyms, minimal pair, substitution of sounds, onomatopoeia, phrase and words with similar pronunciation, idiomatic phrase, addition of sound and word combination. Among those aspects, homonyms are the most frequently utilized in the jokes. Jokes are beneficial for language learners to learn the real use of the language, thus further studies on jokes are suggested.

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a vital role in entertaining and gaining some information. The teacher-researcher needs to do a pre-reading activity to scaffold students' reading comprehension in narrative text. VLP (Vocabulary, Language, Prediction) is an appropriate strategy to improve students' reading achievement by mastering vocabulary before the main reading activity. The students in grade X of SMK with low English reading achievement were taught English, especially reading comprehension in narrative text. Before the strategy was implemented, the average score was 41.1. Then, the Classroom Action Research was conducted, and the VLP strategy was applied. After implementing two cycles of CAR, the average score reached 77.8. It proves that by applying the VLP strategy, students can improve their reading comprehension. Students' motivation in learning English also increased as well as their self-confidence to express their thoughts in class discussions.

Abstract

Language plays a role in the meaning of consumer products in numerous ways. As a result, while establishing an advertising campaign for any ethnic group, language and media are crucial concerns. Surprisingly, English is being increasingly widely used in print advertising in countries like Indonesia, where English is not the predominant language of communication. This study aims to find the effect of using English and the usage of probability markers in triggering purchase intentions towards hygiene and cleaning related products due to Covid-19. This study adopted the mixed-method approach. The researchers distributed questionnaire adapted from Hornikx et al. (2010) to 150 participants and interviewed 15 people. The results showed that the participants preferred English version ads. In addition, when making an advertisement, advertisers must not only choose the appropriate language, but also the appropriate diction. Then, the participants agree that pledges as probability markers influenced their decision to purchase hygiene and cleaning products. Lastly, while designing advertisements, related to hygiene and cleaning products, the advertiser should pay special attention to the body-copy (writings).

Abstract

The object of this study is All the Bright Places (2015), a young adult fiction novel which tells a story about two teenagers and their problems related to their mental illness. The interesting topic which became the main discussion in this study is how the female character of this novel, Violet Markey, using denial as her defence mechanism to cope grief on her sister and boyfriend’s death. To examine this topic, the researchers used descriptive qualitative method. This study found that in order to cope with Markey’s sister death, Markey used self-protective function of denial, while to cope with Finch’s death, her form of denial is by refusing to acknowledge his death.

Abstract

The research aims to (1) identify the cultural materials in ELT textbooks for middle school students; (2) analyze cultural elements that are presented in ELT textbooks. This English textbook entitle English on Sky was written by Mukarto, Widya Kiswara, Sujatmiko Bambang Santoso, and Josephine Sri Murwani. In this research, the researchers used qualitative methods with analysis techniques. In data collection, the researchers used documentation technique with the steps were 1) reading textbook; 2) identifying cultural content in the textbook as well as checking them based on the theory of Cortazzi and Jin; 3) classifying cultural-based content; 4) encoding the data and 5) interpreting data. The result showed that there were 72 cultural contents that exist in the ELT textbook from chapter one until thirteen. Based on the types of cultural contents including: 46 items of source cultures, 14 items of target cultures, and 12 items of international cultures. The elements of culture presented in this study are product, person, and practice. Elements of the product appeared 54 items, person 9 items, and practice 9 items. Therefore, the ELT textbook entitle English on Sky is very recommended and helpful for middle schools students to enhance their language skills, as well as improve their knowledge about culture.

Abstract

The TOEFL is a type test known internationally to assess someone’s proficiency in English language. However, many EFL students have problems in doing the TOEFL test so that their score results are still under the minimum score. The aim of this study is to explore the nursing students’ difficulties in answering the TOEFL questions. This study was a descriptive-quantitative study that involved fifty-one nursing students of the Poltekkes Kemenkes Bengkulu. The data of this study were gathered by using a questionnaire in the form of Google form based on Likert’s scale. The results of the study revealed that the level of difficulty experienced by the nursing students in answering the questions on the TOEFL test was in a high category. The listening comprehension section gained the mean score of 3.79, the structure and written expression section gained the mean score of 3.67, and the reading comprehension section gained the mean score of 3.62. Moreover, their difficulties were in a high category for all of the items in the questionnaire. In brief, the difficulties faced by the nursing students show that their English proficiency is still low.

Abstract

There are many growing types of research about technology-supported feedback in English language teaching. Meanwhile, the study investigating audio feedback in virtual writing class during emergency remote teaching is still underexplored. In order to fill the gap, this research aims at investigating students’ perceptions towards audio feedback in virtual writing class. It employs a qualitative research design. Six students were voluntarily interviewed in this study. Furthermore, their writing was also observed. The findings of this study revealed that students view audio feedback positively. They admit that audio feedback is clear, personal, and detailed. Furthermore, students can feel the teaching presence because of the audio feedback. The further implications are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

This study intends to examine the stages of the hero’s journey based on the mythic structure of Campbell’s monomyth and use the monomyth to analyze how a ten-year-old girl, Chihiro, embarks on a journey to the supernatural world in Spirited Away. The study uses content analysis, a descriptive qualitative method, to analyze the monomyth: a departure–initiation–return journey covering seventeen stages. The monomyth involves metamorphoses and challenges that the heroine Chihiro encounters and explores her evolution during her transition to full autonomy in order to reach transformation and self-individuation. Chihiro, in order to rescue her parents, is destined to take the journey: to sink into darkness, the unconscious, and encounter her natural and primitive essence. By fighting against conflict or opposition, Chihiro, as a mythical heroine, completes her monomyth cycle and attains transformation and regeneration.

Abstract

Thomas Stearns Eliot is an American author and poet. He was one of the greatest authors and poets of the modern period. Most of his literary works deal with the aftermath of the war, which enabled him to win the noble prize in literature. This paper tackles imagism and symbolism in “The Waste Land”. T.S. Eliot’s life and his works and modernism have been discussed. The importance of using these literary devices is demonstrated. Then it explains the reason Eliot wrote ‘‘The Waste Land’’ and how it is “a personal grouse” in life. The images have been used from the old age to the contemporary age, yet the use of each image in this poem of T.S. Eliot is completely elucidated. Analytical, historical, and textual approaches make this paper provide a clear understanding of imagism and symbolism. A special focus will be put on symbolism and imagism and the pioneer writers who initiated them.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal how Unbelievable portrays the differences between male and female detectives handling rape cases, to find out Duvall’s, the female detective, factors, and motivation in helping women victims, and to find out the values ​​of women empowerment in Unbelievable. The research used qualitative method. Reader response, subjective criticism, and women empowerment were the bases theories used in the research. The data are sentences and conversations that show differences in treatment, mindset, factors and motivation, as well as the empowerment of the female main character. There are three results of this study; (1) three differences covering the victim treatment, investigation model, and the mindset between male and female detectives handling rape cases; sensitivity to the mental condition of the victim, clarity of providing investigative information, the efficiency of the investigation system, and assessment of the case and rape victims. (2) Duvall's factors and motivation include self-confidence, empathy, protestant work ethic, and Christian faith. (3) Duvall's success in bringing justice has given strength to victims and other values ​​such as economic independence, freedom to get an education and career paths, balance roles at home and at work, are a reflection of women empowerment.
